Five workers of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF), the student wing of the ruling Muslim Conference, sustained bullet wounds in a clash with activists of pro-independence National Students Federation (NSF) near Muzaffarabad in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on March 18, Police said, according to Dawn. The clash erupted after MSF activists pasted a poster of their organisation’s “Kashmir banega Pakistan” rally outside a shop which reportedly belonged to the family of an NSF leader in Zaminabad village, along the Muzaffarabad-Kohala road. Posters of the rally, which began on March 18 from Mirpur and will conclude in Muzaffarabad on March 23, carry pictures of MS leaders, including PoK Prime Minister Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, his father Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan and predecessor Sardar Sikandar Hayat. DSP City Mohammad Musa Khan told Dawn that five MSF workers identified as Sajid Rashid, Nasir, Sikandar Majid, Maulvi Khamim and Tabassum Nisar had received bullet wounds in their legs and were admitted to the Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences in stable condition.

The violence erupted in Shin Warsak, a village seven kilometres west of Wana in South Waziristan. Both sides fired rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars at each other, residents said. “The situation is very tense,” said a resident of Wana who declined to be identified. “I counted 10 wounded tribesmen were brought to Wana,” he said, adding he had no idea about casualties on the other side. The cause of the clash was not known.

Nearly 50 people, including 35 foreign militants, have been killed in two days of fighting between the al Qaeda-linked militants and Pakistani tribesmen, Pakistani Government officials said on March 20, reported Reuters. Fighting broke out on March 19 in Shin Warsak village, 7-km west of Wana. "According to our reports 35 Uzbek militants and 12 tribal combatants have been killed," said a senior Government official, who declined to be identified. Among the dead were three children killed by a mortar bomb on their way home from school on March 19, a teacher said. "The children were getting off their school bus and some had started walking home when a mortar bomb hit," said the teacher, Noorzali, adding, some children were wounded. Military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said the fighting was still going on and up to 35 people had been killed, at least half of them foreign militants and added that security forces were not involved. A battle between foreign militants, most of them Uzbeks, and ethnic Pashtun tribesmen erupted in the remote area near the Afghan border on March 6, when militants tried to kill a pro-Government tribal leader, in which seventeen people, most of them Uzbeks, were killed. It followed Government efforts to convince the tribesmen to help keep order and stop militant raids into Afghanistan. "It's a success of the government tribesmen strategy ... the tribesmen are fed up with them because they and their activities adversely affect their lives and business," Arshad said.

Two school students were killed and six others injured when their bus was caught in crossfire between local Taliban fighters and Uzbek militants in the restive South Waziristan agency on March 19, witnesses and local people told Dawn. They said that the bus of the Musa Public School taking the students to their homes came under fire at Jaghundai area near the Pak-Afghan border. It is not clear the bus was hit by bullets or a rocket. According to information, tension had been mounting between local Taliban and Uzbek militants in the past three days after the killing of an Arab militant. According to local people, Taliban leaders suspected involvement of Uzbek militants in the killing of the Arab national. A day earlier, two Uzbeks were killed and the Uzbek fighters suspected that local Taliban militants had carried out the killing, local people added.

Clashes between foreign al Qaeda militants and pro-Government tribesmen in South Waziristan have left 110 people dead, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao told Daily Times on March 21. Sherpao said that 84 Uzbek militants and 17 local tribesmen, including nine civilians, had been killed during three days of fighting. Another 83 Uzbeks have been captured by the tribal forces, he said, adding that the Government has not intervened in the clashes. However, witnesses in Wana told Daily Times that the Army had fired artillery rounds from the Zarinoor base at the Uzbek militants’ positions in Azam Warsak and Sheen Warsak and gunship helicopters were hovering over the area. However, Army spokesman Maj Gen Waheed Arshad said he had no information that artillery was being used against the foreign militants. The report further added that Maulvi Nazir is leading the battle against foreign militants for the first time since they crossed over from Afghanistan after the United States invasion. The clashes were spreading from Azam Warsak and Kaloosha to areas like Karikot. Uzbek militants are being supported by key commanders of the late Taliban leader Nek Muhammad and they have taken control of a school in Karikot and all schools have been closed for an indefinite period, tribesmen arriving in Tank city from Wana told Daily Times. Security officials said the clashes began with the killing of Saiful Adil, an Arab fighter whose body was found a few days ago. "Maulvi Nazir supports the Arabs and suspected that the Uzbeks had murdered Adil," the officials said. They said that Nazir’s men attacked two private jails operated by Uzbek militants in Azam Warsak early on March 21, adding that the tribesmen killed more than 20 Uzbeks and rescued four local prisoners. Residents of Wana arriving in Tank city claimed that they had seen "Punjabi Taliban" fighting alongside Nazir’s men, but their claims could not be confirmed. Former Federally Administered Tribal Area security chief Brigadier (retired)) Mehmood Shah said the Government should take advantage of the situation by covertly or overtly supporting the tribesmen. Meanwhile, a jirga led by Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Member of National Assembly Maulana Mirajuddin is heading towards Wana to negotiate a cease-fire between the warring factions.

Security officials in Tank city said that pro-Maulvi Nazir militants ambushed two vehicles carrying 12 Uzbek militants, killing six of them in Zarmilan, 35 kilometres south of Wana. "Other foreign militants fled in the second vehicle while local militants lost two comrades in the ambush," the security officials said. Otherwise, the clashes on the fourth day of the conflict were less intense, a military spokesman said. "The clashes continued but their intensity was low," Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad told Daily Times.

A Jirga (tribal council), comprising tribal elders, religious leaders, local and Afghan Taliban commanders and a delegation of the Jamaat-e-ulema Islami, a pro-Taliban constituent of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal coalition, failed to persuade the two sides to continue a cease-fire that they had agreed to on March 22.

At least four persons were killed and as many wounded in clashes between two militant groups in South Waziristan on March 29, officials and residents said, according to Dawn. Both sides used heavy weapons in the fighting which left the four, two of them foreigners, dead. Sources said the clashes erupted early in the morning between supporters of militant commander Maulvi Nazir and his rival Noor Islam, who is backing foreigners in Azam Warsak, Shin Warsak, Jaghundai and Kalosha areas. The fighting began when the Nazir group tried to dislodge foreigners from a Government school in Ghawakha area, the sources said. A cease-fire was brokered after three hours of fighting. However, a local tribal commander said that fighting would continue until all foreign militants were expelled from South Waziristan. "Though a jirga is still trying to negotiate a ceasefire, our position remains firm that all Uzbek militants should leave the area," Haji Sharif, a supporter of Mullah Nazir, told AFP.

A security official said tribesmen overnight seized control of a school that foreigners were using as their base in Ghawakha, a town near Wana, killing seven Uzbeks. Another official said three tribal fighters were also killed and six wounded in the fighting. Residents said the militants also shot dead a local man who was travelling in the area on his bike. The latest clashes were concentrated in Azam Warsak, Shen Warsak and Kalusha areas of South Waziristan. Residents say between 300 and 500 Uzbeks and Chechens are holed up in the area. They said the Uzbeks were effectively under siege in the mountainous terrain as all roads leading to the troubled towns were being controlled by tribal commander Mullah Nazir. A tribal leader, Haji Sharif, ruled on March 29 out any negotiations with the foreigners.

According to Daily Times, local tribesmen attacked foreign al Qaeda militants hiding in bunkers in the ongoing clashes that killed five people in South Waziristan on March 31, bringing the total death toll since fighting began on March 19 to 177. Pro-government tribesmen attacked bunkers occupied by the militants as part of efforts to drive them from Waziristan bordering Afghanistan. They reportedly seized seven bunkers dug into a mountain from where Uzbek militants and their Chechen and Arab allies could launch attacks on the main town of Wana in South Waziristan. Foreign militants also shelled Pakistani army soldiers in the area, killing two, according to an unnamed security official. Troops from an army base in the area retaliated with artillery fire targeting foreign militants on the outskirts of Wana, he said.

At least 12 people were killed and around 150 injured in a daylong shootout between Madrassa (seminary) students and security force personnel near the pro-Taliban Lal Masjid (red mosque) on July 3, according to Daily Times. The administration confirmed that a journalist, one soldier of the para-military Rangers, a businessman, seminary students and bystanders were among the dead. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the death toll had mounted to 16. Sporadic clashes continued till past midnight when unconfirmed reports suggested a massive security operation to clear the Lal Masjid of armed militants, according to Dawn. The shootout commenced at around 11am after students of the Jamia Hafsa and Jamia Fareedia, Madrassas affiliated to the Lal Masjid, marched towards the nearby Environment Ministry building and a security picket outside it. The students snatched weapons from police and took four officials hostage, according to the police. Rangers personnel fired teargas to repel them, and students stationed inside the mosque responded by opening fire, witnesses said. The students subsequently set fire to the ministry and Estate Office buildings in front of their seminaries. The encounter between the two sides reportedly continued the whole day. Students armed with AK-47s and wearing gas masks took up positions behind sandbags on the roof of the mosque and bunkers inside the mosque courtyard, chanting "Jihad, Jihad!"
