One hundred troops of the Royal Nepal Army have been killed in counter-insurgency operations since the Army has been inducted for the same in late-November 2001, reports on April 30 said. Reports also said as a measure of appreciation for the role being played by the Army, and after a bomb planted on the route that King Gyanendra was to take was defused, the King made a contribution of one million rupees for victims of violence by Maoist insurgents. The army wives welfare association made a similar contribution for victim-families of troops.

According to official sources, with the death of 50 more Maoist insurgents, the toll in the Rolpa crackdown, which commenced on May 2, has reached 400. The operation, which has claimed the highest number of Maoist lives thus far, was continuing till last reports came in. Reports added that the Maoists are believed to have moved to the neighbouring districts as the operation was continuing. However, details of the operation and the amount of the arms and ammunition recovered could not be ascertained. Difficult terrain, jungles and bad weather are reported to have hampered attempts to ascertain the exact loss, according to official press release. The operation is reportedly being conducted by the 4 No Brigade stationed in Surkhet.The Defence Ministry has also confirmed the death of a police personnel in the operations in Lisne Lek of Rolpa district. Meanwhile, media reports indicated that another security force personnel was also killed during the operations. Both the deceased were killed on May 3. Separately, Chairman of the District development Committee, Pyuthan, Bam Bahadur Khatri, said that none of the locals have been killed in the crackdown.

The Royal Nepal Army said on May 6 that a total of 548 Maoist insurgents have been shot dead since May 2, in operations against the insurgents in Rolpa and neighboring Doti district, 500km northwest of the capital Kathnmandu, in what has been termed as the biggest and most successful military operation since the declaration of a state of Emergency in the country. Besides, the Army is conducting blocking operations to prevent the insurgents from fleeing. Among those included area and platoon commanders as well as instructors, the Army said. The Army said it attacked the rebel training centers and shelters in the district as Maoists were preparing to launch a major assault on Rolpa district headquarters Liwang, media reports said. During the operation, three soldiers and a policemen were killed.

Quoting police sources, media reports from Nepal said, on August 12, the Interpol has issued ‘red corner’ notices for the arrest of Maoist insurgents’ chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias ‘Comrade’ Prachanda, his deputy and head of the Maoist parallel government Dr.Baburam Bhattarai and six more top leaders. Notices have been issued for the arrests of Chandra Prakash Gajurel, Haribol Gajurel, Pampha Bhusal, Agni Sapkota, Rit Bahadur Khadka and Debendra Parajuli, too, police said. Unconfirmed reports earlier said Sapkota, one of the members of the Maoists’ delegation at the aborted peace talks with the government in the year 2001, was arrested by security forces. The Maoists, besides, claim that another leader, Khadka, was killed in an encounter in the ongoing operations against the insurgents. There are also unconfirmed reports that many of the insurgents’ leaders are in hiding in India, and Nepal has, reportedly, sought their extradition.

The money would be used to purchase military hardware, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was quoted as having said to media sources, on August 16. Deuba also thanked Britain for its assistance and for convening a meeting, in July 2002, of donors to help Nepal fight the insurgents. The United States has already provided US$ 20 million in assistance to Nepal to fight the Maoists.

Also, 55 tolas (a unit of measure) of gold, 51 pieces of gold jewelry and seven items of silver jewelry were deposited. An unspecified amount of foreign currency, too, was deposited. The Defence Ministry said NR 85,000 recovered from a house, in Sitapaila in September, where two rebels died while making a bomb, was also deposited with the Bank. The remaining money was recovered from relatives of senior Maoist leaders Debendra Paudel and Rabi Karki in Pokhara and Kathmandu. The army previously deposited Rs.6.4 million and 31 kgs of gold with the Bank on two separate occasions.

Earlier reports held that 40 policemen were killed in the attack. An estimated 1,100 insurgents were reportedly involved in the attack that lasted for nearly five hours. It has been conformed that two Maoist insurgents, too, were killed during the attack. However, Minister of State for Home Devendra Raj Kandel, who visited the incident-site, said 70 insurgents are feared dead. Reinforcements have been rushed-in and intensive combing operations are in progress, when reports last came in. The police post, being manned by 74 personnel, has been completely destroyed and an unspecified number of weapons were looted. Giving the break-up of police fatalities, the Home Ministry said Inspector Krishna Bahadur Shrestha, a Sub-Inspector, three Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 13 head constables and 31 constables were killed in the attack.

Less than 12 hours before the Sandhikharka-attack, the insurgents attacked the Bhiman Area Police Post in Sindhuli district, around midnight on September 8, killing at least 49 policemen and injuring 21 more. Latest reports held that the dead bodies of at least 50 insurgents were dumped in a nearby river following the midnight attack. Reports even claimed that the insurgents had shot dead policemen from the rear even after they had laid down arms and surrendered. Also, the insurgents fired at two military helicopters carrying SF reinforcements to Sandhikharka and partially damaged two of them, thus forcing them to land elsewhere.
