Police sources said the bodies of the three Naxalites were found in the hillocks on January 6, following an encounter on January 5 night. Earlier, on the same day, police killed three other Naxalites who had killed an equal number of police personnel in a landmine blast near Kothur, in the same district.

Police sources said, on January 7, at least two civilians were injured in the crossfire between police and left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) after the Naxalites attacked a police party near Itidih village in Ranchi district. There was no report of any casualty on either side, but the group of approximately 15 MCC Naxalites managed to escape into the deep forests.

According to media reports, a police driver was killed and five security force personnel injured when suspected left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) triggered a landmine blast near Kasmar village, Palamu district, on January 8. Reports said the Naxalites triggered the landmine as soon as the vehicle of a police party approached the village. The Naxalites who tried to snatch the weapons of injured security force personnel also fired at them. However, SFs retaliated till the Naxalites fled the scene. The borders of the district have been sealed and an intensive combing operation has been launched to track down the Naxalites.

Suspected left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) exchanged heavy fire with security forces in Palamu district, on January 9. Official sources said no security force personnel was, however, either killed or injured in the encounter, which occurred when the Naxalites fired on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) personnel. During the encounter, the Naxalites hurled 13 country-made bombs and 1300 rounds were fired at the forces who had gone to arrest the Naxalites behind the January 8-landmine blast in the same district. Security force personnel retaliated with light machine guns, sten guns and self loading rifles and forced the Naxalites to flee into deep forests towards Chatra district.

Police laid an ambush on receipt of reliable information that a PWG action team was moving in the area. Even as the Naxals were asked to reveal their identity, they opened fire, resulting in retaliatory firing by police that killed the Naxal commander.

Three left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) were killed in an encounter in the dense forest near Manala village, under Kammarpalli police station-limits, Nizamabad district, on January 20. The slain Naxalites included Nizamabad Division Committee member Mekala Mallesh alias Bhaskar, Kathlapur Local Guerrilla Squad (LGS) ‘deputy commander’ Golla Ravi alias Santosh and woman cadre Vadla Sujata alias Navatha. Three other Naxalites managed to escape into the forests. Police recovered four weapons, including an SLR, two 303 rifle and a 410 musket and 15 live rounds from the encounter site.

A former district committee member of the Communist Party of India––Marxist-Leninist [CPI-ML] (Janasakthi) was killed in an encounter at Nukalamarri village, Vemulawada mandal (administrative unit), Karimnagar district on February 18. According to police sources, the encounter took place when a police team checking vehicles on Namiligundupally road asked two persons going on a motorbike to stop. But, the duo opened fire at the police. The police retaliated in which the surrendered Naxalite was killed. Police sources said the slain Naxalite, who had laid down arms and surrendered in earlier in the year 2002, had revived his contact with the Janasakthi group. A revolver was also recovered from the encounter-site.

There was some confusion over the identity of the dead CCM. Reports said he bears the alias Chandranna and could be either be Pullur Prasad Rao or Sande Rajamouli. Both carry a head money of INR.12 lakh. The correct identity of the CCM was not known, when reports last came in. In all, four Naxalites were killed in the exchange of fire. The other three are Sudarshan, Ravinder alias Madavi Rao and Bharat alias Pendra Bujji Rao. Also, five weapons and four kit bags were recovered from the encounter-site. State Director General of Police Peravaram Ramulu and other police officials visited the spot later in the day.

Five suspected Naxalites (left-wing extremists) affiliated to the Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (Janashakti group) were reportedly killed during an encounter with the police in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on November 28. The Hindu has reported that a police team was combing the Sironcha forest area when they sighted the Naxalites. The extremists fired at the police party and in the retaliatory firing, five Naxalites, including a woman, were shot dead. The police recovered one self-loading rifle, six 8 mm rifles and some unexploded landmines from the encounter site.
