An exchange of fire took place between the Security Forces (SFs) and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres at a forested area of Hirmagunda village under Gangaloor Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 5, reports Outlook. A joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and the District Force was out on an anti-Naxal[Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in the area when a group of armed rebels opened fire, prompting the SFs to retaliate. While no casualties were reported in the gun-battle, the SFs recovered a single-barrel muzzle loading (SBML) gun, a couple of bows and arrows and a cache of materials of daily use from the spot.

Security Forces (SFs) neutralized a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp following an exchange of fire near Lengerimunda village at Chakapad area in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 7, reports The New Indian Express. An anti-Maoist operation was launched by a joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) near the said village. While combing operation was underway, the rebels resorted to heavy firing and hurled grenades.The SFs retaliated following which the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest cover. While no casualty was reported from either side in the incident, the SFs recovered a detonator, two hand grenades, country-made guns, two magazines, haversacks, black uniforms, medicines, clothes and utensils from the camp.

The gunfight broke out when a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was on an anti-Naxal[Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in the area.After the exchange of fire, the body of the slain Maoist was recovered along with a 9 mm pistol from the spot. Ranu was a‘commander’ of the Maoists’ Farsegarh Action Squad and ‘Deputy Commander’ of Farsegarh LOS (Local Operating Squad). Pistol rounds, arrow bombs and daily use items were recovered from the spot.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in a forested area under Tarrem Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 19, reports NDTV. While the Maoist was shot dead by the SFs, a District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel was injured after he invertedly stepped on an Improvised explosive device (IED) planted by the rebels during the operation. “Multiple gunfights took place between SFs and Maoists in the forests under the said Police Station around 450 kilometers away from capital Raipur. The team included personnel from DRG, Special Task Force (STF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Force,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj P said adding that “following one of the encounters, the body of a Maoist was found from the spot while DRG assistant constable Jogeshwar Paikra suffered injuries in an IED blast.” The SFs also recovered a 12 bore gun, uniforms, IED, Maoist literature, etc. from the site. Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Kawasi Masa (30) and Muchaki Budhra (30) were arrested following an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forest between Dhanikortha and Kormagondi villages in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on January 22, reports Outlook. When a patrolling team comprising District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was cordoning off the forest it came under fire by the Maoists. After a brief exchange of fire, two cadres were arrested while others managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest. A 5-kg tiffin bomb, five detonators, a Maoist uniform and other materials were recovered from the possession of the two arrested cadres.

The exchange of fire took place when personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of the Odisha Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) were carrying out a joint anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] operation in the said forest. The Maoists opened fire at the SF personnel and in ensued gun-battle the Maoist was killed. Acting on specific information about the movement of 10 to 15 armed Maoists in the Bender Reserve forest area and their plan to carry out attacks, an operation was launched in the area by a composite team of Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF). The operational team came under heavy fire from the CPI-Maoist cadres which led to the exchange of fire. The exchange of fire lasted for two to two-and-a-half hours in which five Maoists were killed,” Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankit Goyal said. Following tip-off over the major movement of the Maoists, the planned anti-Maoist operations were undertaken by various parties of the forces along the Bijapur-Sukma border from three different directions in the conflict zone of Bastar on April 2 night. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), anti-Naxal operations, OP Pal said, the personnel belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) were involved in the operation launched from five places - Tarrem, Usoor and Pamed (Bijapur) and Minpa and Narsapuram (Sukma). The villagers had been protesting the setting up of the Police camp for the last few days, allegedly under pressure from CPI-Maoist. The villagers have returned to their homes on May 16. Some people, including CPI-Maoist cadres of the Jagargonda Area Committee reached the Police camp and started firing on May 17. SFs retaliated and the exchange of fire continued. Ram Bhengra, a native of Kulap village and Security Forces (SFs) recovered two country-made fire weapons, two live bullets, five bikes, three mobile phones, two backpacks and some daily utility items after the exchange of fire. The encounter continued for around two hours when PLFI cadres opened fire on SFs. Police opened around 20 rounds of fire on PLFI cadres. No casualty or injury was reported during the encounter. SFs comprising of Khunti Police and 94th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were jointly carrying out an anti- Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] operation on getting intelligence inputs that PLFI cadres are planning some attacks in the forest area bordering Khunti and Gumla Districts of Jharkhand. The intelligence inputs further confirmed that PLFI ‘area commander’ John Topno along with his armed squad is moving in the bordering area. Some other members of that armed group were identified as Nakul Singh, Bishram Kongari and Wilcon. Topno was along with a dozen PLFI and they decamped in the forest area except Bhengra who was arrested. CPI-Maoist cadres of Kasansoor Dalam (armed squad) were trying to organise a meeting with the villagers regarding tendu leaves contract when the Police got a hint of it. The CPI-Maoist cadres had met the villagers and were supposed to sneak out early in the dawn but their camp was stormed by the C-60 commandos from Gadchiroli and Aheri's Pranhita headquarters. The encounter had taken place during the daybreak. Police had kicked off the operation on May 20 after learning about the CPI-Maoist cadres’ presence in the forest. Six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange of fire with the Greyhound forces of Andhra Pradesh Police at Theegalametta forest in Koyyuru Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Mampa Police Station area in Visakhapatnam District of Andhra Pradesh on June 16, reports The Times of India. Police have identified five CPI-Maoist cadres killed in this incident. The identity of the one lady CPI-Maoist cadre is yet to be ascertained. The five CPI-Maoist cadres identified are Divisional Committee Member (DCM) cadre leader Sande Gangaiah alias Ashok, from Gumpula village under Odelu Mandal in Peddapalli District of Telangana, Ranadev alias Arjun of Kalimela Dalam (armed squad), Santu Nachika, Area Committee Member (ACM), from Koraput District in Odisha and two women cadres identified as Paike from Chhattisgarh and Lalita from Teemulabanda village under GK Veedhi Mandal in Visakhapatnam District of Andhra Pradesh. Gangaiah was a member of the medical team of CPI-Maoist. Police have recovered one AK-47 rifle, one Self Loading Rifle (SLR), one carbine, three .303 rifles and a country-made weapon from the location. The encounter between the Greyhounds and CPI-Maoist cadres came after nearly four years of calm in Andhra Pradesh. Police have information that some CPI-Maoist cadres were injured. They will be provided best medical treatment if they surrender and appealed to other cadres of CPI-Maoist to surrender and join mainstream, said Visakha Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Boddepalli Krishna Rao. A helicopter was scrambled to conduct an aerial survey of the area, with the suspicion that more number of CPI-Maoist cadres could be taking shelter in the forest area, adds Telangana Today.

On a tip-off that about 20 Maoists are gathered in Jairasi village, a Police team reached the spot and surrounded them, Police said in a statement. "When asked to surrender, the Maoists started firing while retreating towards the forest. Police also retaliated in self-defence. Several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, were recovered from the encounter site, Police said. Sources said a Jharkhand Jaguar team was on a search operation in Saliya forest area, around 10 kilometres from Latehar District Police headquarters, when the JJMP extremists opened fire on them. During the two-hour gunfight, a Maoist was killed and Deputy Commandant Rajesh Kumar sustained bullet injuries, they said. Kumar was taken to Latehar and then airlifted to Ranchi for treatment. Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar said about five to six armed rebels tried to enter a Police camp at Kochang after November 21 midnight to paste a CPI-Maoist poster threatening bandh (general shut down strike). The rebels opened fire after being stopped by Police, and the Police had to retaliate with counter-firing, the SP added. “They (rebels) fled the spot after getting overpowered by our men. In the incident of bombing of the under-construction Police Station located in Kurumgarh, the Maoists team coming to Gumla while traveling continuously from Latehar and Lohardaga, and the Police had got information that the Maoists from Lohardaga and Latehar had reached Gumla. About 200 Maoists were claimed to be there in the squad. Earlier, on November 25, the Maoists had blown up the Police Station building at around 12.30 pm. An exchange of fire took place between Security Forces (SFs) and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres during a combing operation in the Patadhara Reserve Forest area under Sinapalli Police limits in Nuapada District of Odisha on the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border on December 16, reports ommcomnews.com. “When a joint operation was being launched by SOG [Special Operation Group], CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] and DVF [District Voluntary Force] personnel in the Patadhara reserve forest an exchange of fire took place between Naxals and a SOG team,” informed Pratyush Dibakar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Nuapada addressing a presser. Dibakar said that Naxals on seeing the security personnel fired at them first, following which security personnel returned the fire. “Our teams fired around 49 rounds. The Naxals managed to escape taking advantage of the hilly terrain and forest cover. During the search our teams have recovered some articles,” the SP added.

Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, "On a tip-off a team of Dantewada district reserve guards (DRG) was out on search operation. When the forces arrived close to the forested terrain of Gonderas near Aranpur, the rebels opened fire resulting into an exchange of fire. The forces later recovered two female bodies of the banned outfit from the encounter site." The slain bodies were identified as Hidme Kohrame, Mallanger ‘area committee member, (ACM)’ of Darbha Division and Pojje, head of Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM), the outfit's cultural troupe, in Nilawaya of Mallanger area committee. Kohrame and Pojje carried the reward of INR 500,000 and INR 100,000 respectively on their heads. The SP said that the SFs also recovered three locally-made rifles, ammunition, explosives and items of daily use from the spot and the search operation in the region has been intensified.

The combing operation by the Special Operations Group (SOG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) took place at Patadhara Reserve Forest area and the Maoists started firing at the SFs and the team retaliated. Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma said, the gunfight took place in Palachalma forest under Kishtaram Police Station limits when a team of the 208th battalion of the CoBRA was out on an anti-Maoist operation, and when the patrolling team was cordoning off the forest, an exchange of fire took place. “Constable Virendra Singh, belonging to CoBRA's 208th battalion, suffered a bullet injury on his chest and was shifted to the CRPF's field hospital in Kishtaram. Preparations were being made to airlift him to Raipur for further treatment but he succumbed by then,” the SP said.
