Two Mizos, Sanglianthanga and Lalzawmliana, who were abducted along with a non-tribal, Deep Mondal, by the Bru militants and the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) on November 23 2013 were released on January 15, reports Times of India. The trio was abducted by NLFT and Bru National Development Front of Mizoram (BNDFM) from the abandoned Chikha anti-poaching camp inside Mamit district's Dampa Tiger Reserve on the Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border. Police said the three persons were held captive inside Bangladesh for 55 days. Deep Mondal, who worked with a private telecom company, has not been released yet, a senior state Police official said. "The released hostages and their guides are likely to reach the Mizoram-Bangladesh border by Friday. They were kept in a forest in Bangladesh as the abductors feared the state police might make a rescue attempt," the official said.

The two Mizo drivers who were abducted on November 23, 2013 returned to Mizoram on January 21 after spending 60 days in captivity in the jungles of Bangladesh, reports The Telegraph. The two men, Sanglianthanga and Lalzamliana, were brought to Silsuri, a border village in western Mizoram. From there, they were brought to Mamit, said Mamit Superintendent of Police (SP), Rodingliana Chawngthu.Taxi driver Sanglianthanga of Mamit and truck driver Lalzamliana of Kolasib were jointly abducted by the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and Bru National Democratic Liberation Front of Mizoram, along with 25-year-old telecom professional Deep Mandal, a resident of West Bengal. Mandal is yet to be released, Police officials said. Mizoram Home Minister, R. Lalzirliana said Tripura police had arrested two of the 12 kidnappers. Six of the abductors were NLFT cadres and the rest belong to the Bru outfit. Lalzirliana said the NLFT handed over the two Mizo hostages to the Mizoram police team. R. Lalzirliana expressed disappointment over the failure to rescue Mandal. He said continued efforts would be made to secure Mandal’s release.

Armed militants waylaid their vehicle and kidnapped three traders and the driver of the car,” a Tripura Police Spokesman told reporters. Two traders however managed to escape. Tripura Police have asked their Mizoram counterparts to rescue the hostages. The Border Security Force (BSF) has also been alerted to arrest the militants if they tried to cross the India-Bangladesh border. The A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) group that was behind the abduction of the primary teacher was reportedly led by one Embero Mongting Sangma and included a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) deserter known as Goera. Police sources reveal that Goera was arrested some months ago during an extortion drive and had served a jail term before his release. The outfit had demanded INR 20, 0000 from the family of the primary school teacher but is believed to have left empty handed following the quick crackdown on them by Garo Hills Police.

Two 9 mm pistols, one 7.65 mm pistol, two country–made pistols and ammunition were recovered from them. Kokrajhar Police stated that around 26 Nepali boys received training at a camp in Myanmar through the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and added that after returning they started working for the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS). Further, the Police stated that NDFB-IKS was outsourcing activities like kidnapping and extortion to these individuals and that they may have a hand in the abduction of four Bhutanese nationals on August 8. Mamit District Superintendent of Police (SP) C Lalnunmawia said 12 militants, 10 of them armed and wearing fatigues, abducted a total of 15 people, but four were released later. He also added that a combing operation had been launched by the Police. Sources stated that National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the Bru Democratic Front of Mizoram (BDFM) were suspected to be involved in the abduction. They also added that it is suspected that the militants might have taken the workers towards neighbouring Rangamati District of Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) where both the groups have hide outs. That two traders, identified as Isab Ali and Jamal Khandakar, were abducted from Helchaguri in Baksa District on December 2 and their bodies were recovered at Mainamata under Labdanguri Police station in Barpeta District. Though no organization has claimed responsibility for the incident, initial reports suggest that the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS) is behind the incident. The Telegraph adds that five persons from Barapeta village had gone to neighbouring Helsiguri village for some work when they came across a group of militants. Baksa Deputy Commissioner Vinod Seshan said they suspect the involvement of NDFB-IKS, but “cannot confirm it now”, since Investigations are going on. The Army, police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are carrying out a joint operation to arrest the culprits.

A K Srivastava, the engineer who was abducted from Rongara in South Garo Hills close to the international border with Bangladesh, was released unharmed on the outskirts of Baghmara town in South Garo Hills District, reports The Shillong Times. Though Superintendent of Police (SP) Lakador Syiem denied having any knowledge about payment of ransom, highly placed Police sources, revealed that money did change hands for the engineer’s safe return. It has also been revealed that the abductors transported Srivastava into Bangladesh shortly after he was kidnapped. The engineer was supervising the construction of flood lighting of the border fencing along the Bangladesh Border. SP stated that Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF), a group known to be responsible for a number of extortion and kidnapping cases in the region was responsible for the abduction.

A small time florist of South Garo Hills, identified as Ranjit Modak who was abducted at gunpoint from Dambuk Aga area in South Garo Hills District on December 5 and taken across to Bangladesh was released unharmed on December 13, reports The Shillong Times. According to the reports he was let off by the militants near the international border on the Bangladesh side and he crossed over to India. Earlier, the kidnappers had demanded INR 1 lakh for his safe release. However, the Police suspect that money had exchanged hands although the victim claims to have only paid INR 18000 which was forcibly taken from him by the group at the time of his kidnapping.
