The Shillong Times reports that suspected Rabha tribal militants on January 16 abducted the manager of a firm identified as Ganeshyam Das, working on a railway project in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills District, bordering Assam. He was abducted at gun point by two unidentified men after he visited the railway line construction site at Mendipathar area in East Garo Hills, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Rajiv Mehta said. Though no militant group has claimed responsibility, intelligence agencies suspect the handiwork of Rabha Viper Army — a rebel group operating largely in Rabha tribe-inhabited areas in Assam’s Goalpara District and certain areas of Meghalaya’s East and West Garo Hills Districts. The Rabha Viper Army was formed with the support of Assam-based outfit, United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in 2008.

Heavily armed GNLA rebels on January 23, 2012 abducted three Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MECL) engineers - Apus Pothmi, Boney Majaw and Marshal R Swer at gunpoint from their residential quarters in the Rongkhon area. Swer was later released unharmed. "Seven days will be given to the Meghalaya Government to give us a convincing reply on the poor power connectivity in the interior areas of Garo Hills. The Government must answer why there is no power connectivity," said Sohan D Shira, the military wing chief of GNLA, adding, "If the government fails to give a convincing reply to the people of Garo Hills, we will have no option but to take another step.”

According to sources, the teacher identified as Christopher G Momin was kept confined in a hideout of the rebels in Bajengdoba region in West Garo Hills District. The ANVC-B militants abducted him believing that he was working as a Police informer and demanded INR 700,000 for his release, police said on October 3. After realizing that they had kept captive a wrong person, the militant group released him. However, they demanded a sum of INR 100,000 from him as a ‘maintenance cost’ for the period he was kept as captive. It is not known whether the amount was paid or not.

Security Forces (SFs) in the last 10 days have arrested seven militants, including a women, belonging to Lamjanba Khuman faction of Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC- Lamjanba Khuman) on charges of abduction, reports Business Standard on January 1. The arrested militants have been identified as Mangdenbam Bobby Singh (28), Khumanthem Babu Singh (37), Khumanthem Chandramani Singh (36), Mayanglambam Naoba (21), Irengbam Bode Singh (30), Nongmeitei Shiv Chander (30) and a woman Koijam Ningol Radha Devi (37). SFs recovered 35 demand letters signed by Lamyanba Khumman and Hirachnadra, another senior leader of the outfit. Further, SFs also managed to rescue two hostages from the arrested militant’s captivity. The militants had abducted two persons, who were employees of a Railway Construction Company and had demanded a ransom amounting INR 15 million. These arrests came after SFs arrested KCP-MC- Lamjanba Khuman’s Revenue Officer, Khwairakpam Khogendro Singh in Delhi on December 20, 2012.
