Two Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) cadres and two civilians were killed in the crossfire between Assam Rifles and militants at Holam village in Khonsa of Tirap District on January 2, reports The Telegraph. Two AK-47 rifles, a sniper rifle and an M-16 rifle were recovered from the incident site. An Assam Rifles official based at Khonsa said another militant, who was injured in the encounter, escaped but a search was on to track him down. An operation was launched early in the morning following specific information about the presence of a group of militants in the village.

According to a source, AR troops launched an assault in order to drive out some suspected ZUF cadres who have opened a temporary camp at Langkhong Khunthak. Later, the armed militants fled from the scene. There is no report of casualty on either side.

The Shillong Times reports that suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants attacked a Special Weapon and Tactic (SWAT) team at Ambari near Shallang in West Khasi Hills District in the morning of March 22. GNLA militants numbering around 12 to 14 carrying heavy arms came to Songsak toll gate for extorting money to the trucks. Sallang Police after getting the information about the presence of GNLA rebels in the area rushed a SWAT team to the spot. GNLA militants attacked the Swat team as soon as it reached the spot. The exchange fire continued for 10 to 15 minutes and GNLA rebels later escaped to a thick forest at Ambari. Police informed that one AK 47 dummy was recovered from the encounter site. Police also recovered one pair of slipper, commando uniform, commando cap and one book of GNLA demand notes.

Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) and NSCN-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) cadres on March 29 engaged in heavy gun battle at Akhoya village jurisdiction, in Mokokchung District, reports The Shillong Times. There are no reports of any casualties from either side. Later, villagers from Akhoya village, numbering around 500 and armed with spears, chased away armed groups of the NSCN-IM and NSCN-K from the vicinity of the village. The Ao Senden (apex body of Ao tribes) president Prof Sangyu Yaden while strongly condemning the gunfight maintained that such ‘factional fights’ are detrimental to the peace process and reconciliation efforts, especially at a time when all Naga people are crying for peace and reconciliation.

Two militants belonging to the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA) were extorting money from traders at Jadi bazaar, near Nangalbibra when they were spotted by a Police team, leading to an exchange of fire. Both the militants – Lenion K Momin alias Simpong of Nangalbibra and Sengcheng M Sangma sustained injuries and were being taken for medical treatment when Lenion died on the way.

A Police team lead by East Siang Superintendent of Police (SP), Devendra Arya rescued 65-year-old Keshav Pandey from the captivity of the militants after about one hour gun battle in the night of May 2 and arrested four cadres, identified as Rajiv Narzary, Suresh Basumatary, Bolin Boro and Tengana Narzary while three others managed to escape. Pandey, who owns a cattle farm near Partung area inside the Daying Ering Wildlife sanctuary was abducted after a few miscreants entered his farm disconnecting the power supply.

Indian Army and Assam Police personnel killed six militants of Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT), including its ‘commander-in-chief’, Bikash Teron alias Kangthur in a gun battle on May 14 at Langtibuk, of the Singhason hill in Karbi Anglong District, reports The Assam Tribune. The other cadres are yet to be identified. Two AK 47 rifles and one 12 bore repeater gun, two 9mm pistols, two hand grenades, 453 ammunition of AK 47 rifle, 40 ammunition of Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) and 84 ammunition of 9mm pistol have been recovered from the slain militants, adds The Nagaland Post. In recent times the outfit unlashed massive drive for extortion and abduction in several parts of the District which become a cause of concern for the Police and army. The outfit had also disrupted the process of election campaigning in the hill Districts of Assam in the recently concluded parliamentary election by imposing general strike for indefinite period which was withdrawn only on the day of polling i.e. on April 12.

The slain militants have been identified as Sengnang N Sangma, Batnagar R Marak, Dikdik D Momin, Kallam R Marak and Kekil R Marak The Operation was launched after getting reports about the presence of a large group of armed men in a makeshift camp close to family residence of the outfit’s ‘chairman’ Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin. However he along with six others managed to escape during the fire fight. There were reportedly as many as 30 cadres in two separate locations when the raid was conducted. The District Police Chief, Davis Nestell R Marak also revealed that as many as 20 militants were taking shelter in a makeshift camp in forested area just metres from Norrok’s house. The Security Forces (SFs) also recovered three AK rifles with five magazines, 109 live ammunition, a pistol with three magazines, 22 empty cases of AK ammunition, two demand notes along with embroidered name plates and shoulder badges.

A militant, identified as B Laijam of the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS) was killed by Security Forces (SFs) in an encounter on June 17 at Auzar Guri in Kokrajhar District, reports The Sentinel. The encounter happened when three NDFB-IKS cadres with arms in two motorcycles came across an Army and Police party. In the ensuing gun battle one militant was killed and two militants were injured, although the injured militants managed to escape. An AK–56 rifle, 160 live ammunition, one magazine, a grenade, one TVS bike, three mobile handsets and SIM cards and INR 3092 were recovered from the militant. Later, a group of fifteen NDFB-IKS militants fired several rounds into the air in front of media personnel’s who had gone to report the incident. The ‘area commander’ B Jwblang stated that they will soon start attacking the SFs in a retribution for the killing.

The group which had abducted the official was a mixed group including petty criminals and even militants with one identified by West Garo Hills Police as Kakarong who is a militant of the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B). The breakthrough was achieved when an individual identified as Lusenpa was arrested on June 17 from Antekagre in West Garo Hills District.

The A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) group that was behind the abduction of the primary teacher was reportedly led by one Embero Mongting Sangma and included a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) deserter known as Goera. Police sources reveal that Goera was arrested some months ago during an extortion drive and had served a jail term before his release. The outfit had demanded INR 20, 0000 from the family of the primary school teacher but is believed to have left empty handed following the quick crackdown on them by Garo Hills Police.

SFs stated that group of five militants, led by “area commander” Rangdat, were staying at the hideout. Police have recovered a 7.65mm pistol with four live rounds of ammunition and an empty cartridge from the hideout. The SFs have raided twelve hideouts of GNLA, after Counter Insurgency operations were launched in the last two months. The Shillong Times further adds that the ‘area commander’ Rangdat is the second in command of GNLA’s ‘northern command’ and a close aide of ‘area commander’ Pilliport D Shira.According to security outputs, the killing of non tribal labourers in West Garo Hills is being carried out to neutralize Police operations against militants, reports The Shillong Times on July 26. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC), Pravin Bakshi stated “The spate of killings has a clear design to vitiate the communal atmosphere of Garo Hills and neighbouring Districts and precipitate a law and order situation wherein communal tension prevails. The Shillong Times reports that on September 18 a former Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant identified as Teseng Sangma who left the outfit to form his own group was killed in an encounter with a joint team of North Garo Hills Police and Army. Police with support of Army unit based at Damra (Assam) launched an operation in the vicinity of Bangsi Minol village in North Garo Hills. In the encounter another militant identified as Gobin Sangma managed to escape. An automatic Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifle along with magazine holding eight live rounds of ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Teseng Sangma who had joined GNLA in 2012 had deserted GNLA along with Gobin Sangma few months back to start their own organization to extort money. The group is believed to have around eight members.

Two suspected militants of the Norrok X Momin-led United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) were killed in an encounter with Security Force (SF) personnel at Nala, near Thantipahar village in Goalpara District, on December 18, reports The Shillong Times. Goalpara district Police Chief N. Gogoi informed that that the incident occurred at around 4am when an Army team backed by Assam Police personnel was out on patrol duty spotted movement of the militants. He said that around 5 to 6 persons were crossing the area taking advantage of the darkness when they were spotted and challenged. In the reported exchange of fire two militants were killed while the rest fled taking cover of the darkness. SF personnel recovered two pistols, two powerful 36 high explosive hand grenades, 2 crude bombs, two detonators, two gelatine sticks, UALA documents, seven rounds of live AK ammunition and seven rounds of live 7.65 ammunition for pistols.

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel exchanged fire with suspected IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS) militants at a forest near Bhairabkunda in Udalguri District on December 29, reports The Telegraph. There were however no reports of any casualty. An official source said additional troops were rushed to the area close to the India-Bhutan border, about 40km from Udalguri town.
