A villager was killed and another reportedly went missing in a crossfire when the police retaliated to an attack by some extremists at Sarbangcherra forest area of West Tripura district on January 7, according to UNI. The villagers alleged that the Tripura State Rifle (TSR) soldiers opened unprovoked fire on the villagers, who had gone to the jungle for gathering firewood and other forest produce. However, police officials denied the allegation and stated that the TSR personnel was challenged by a group of armed people.

Security forces killed a United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant belonging to the Charlie Company of the 28th battalion in an encounter at Ahukhat village under Makum police station in the Tinsukia district in January 10, Telegraph reports. The militant was identified as Corporal Puwali Dowerah alias Hiren Dowerah, a resident of Hatijan. Three other cadres, however, managed to escape. The security forces also recovered one .32 pistol, one magazine with two live rounds and three bicycles at the site of the encounter.

Tripurainfo reports that an encounter between the security forces and the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants took place at Old Ramguna Para village of Atharamura range under Salema police station in the Dhalai district. The militants escaped from the spot after a brief gun battle. Blood trails were also found in the spot and police suspect that someone in the extremist group might have sustained bullet injuries. Security forces also recovered several documents including extortion notices from the spot.

Police recovered a two wheeler vehicle and one driving licence in the name of one L. Ibobi Singh of Wanjing Sorokhaibam from the incident site. According to a delayed report, a Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) militant, identified as Philip Singnar, was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Kakajan under Borpathar Police Station in the Karbi Anglong district on January 23. Another cadre, Lorence Teron, was arrested by the security forces on the spot while another managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest. An AK-56, two magazines, a smoke grenade and 55 rounds of live immunizations were recovered from their possession.

The security force (SF) personnel killed two militants, suspected to be either from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) or the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDBF), during an exchange of fire at Silikhaguri Sapori under Narayanpur police station in the North Lakhimpur district. An injured militant escaped with his AK-47 rifle, while a pistol with five rounds of ammunition and a revolver with four rounds were recovered from the slain militants, the sources said. In a separate encounter in the Karbi Anglong district, an NDFB militant was killed by the SF personnel. A group of three NDFB militants involved in extortion had gone to collect the money when SF personnel stopped them, but they managed to escape after opening fire. 12 Black Widow militnts were killed and 18 others injured in a gun battle with the security forces (SFs) in the North Cachar Hills district on May 10, reports The Hindu. Troops of the 8th Sikh Regiment and police cordoned off the village along the Assam-Nagaland-Manipur border around 4.30am (IST) during the operation at a camp of the Black Widow sheltering around 30 militnts, police sources said. The militants opened fire on the SFs, who retaliated killing 12 of them, the sources said. None from the security forces or the villagers was injured or killed, they said. The village is dominated by Jemi-Naga tribals and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) militants were also suspected to be in the militant group as they have an understanding with the Black Widow militants. The dead were yet to be identified and investigations were on, the sources said. The ceasefire between the Black Widow and Centre expired recently and the State Government had been instructed by the Union Home Ministry to draw up an action plan to improve the law and order situation, particularly in the NC Hills district.

Tayep Ali, from the militants’ captivity when they neutralised a major hideout of the group after a brief encounter at Wakhurok under Patsoi Police station on May 26, reports Imphal Free Press. While 16 other militants managed to escape, one 9-mm pistol, camouflage uniforms, jungle boots, hats, caps, utensils, and gun pouches were recovered from the hideout. Two women sympathisers, identified as Sanjenbam Indira and her younger sister Pratima, were also arrested while they were sharing information with the escaped cadres of the outfit. The report added that Tayep was abducted by the KCP militants on May 22 and was later tortured for allegedly smuggling drugs. He was asked to pay INR 10 00000 for his release and later the leaders of the outfit took INR 3 00000 from his wife in the Senapati district on May 24.

At least six militants were killed in separate encounters with the security forces (SFs) in the State, according to IANS. Three United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were shot dead in an encounter with the SFs on June 10 at Borbam village under Tengakhat Police Station in the Dibrugarh district. Earlier, on June 9, two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with the SFs at Palashguri in the Baksa district. Telegraph reports that the militants are identified as Dharya Deka, the ‘commander’ of ULFA’s 709 Battalion and another cadre, Rana Rabha. On June 10, ULFA militant, identified as Aditya Naidu alias Tarun Pandav, of the Bravo Company of the 28th Battalion of the outfit was killed in an encounter with the Army at Timon tea estate under Kakotibari Police Station in the Sivasagar district.
