A suspected Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) terrorist was killed in retaliatory firing by police on January 9 afternoon, following the latter intercepting the taxi the terrorist was travelling in, at Lumshai, Shillong. The police later recovered a Chinese grenade, a 9mm pistol, 15 rounds of ammunition, Rs 1,420, in cash and a mobile phone. Cellular operators have been asked to provide information on calls made and received by the slain terrorist. Subsequent unconfirmed reports said police arrested two more HNLC terrorists, who were injured in the same incident, from a taxi stand in Shillong.

Media reports have indicated that terrorists belonging to the Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) of Meghalaya and National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) on January 22 attacked a security forces camp by firing at it using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) at Tikrikilla in South Garo Hills. Senior police officials were reportedly present in the camp at the time of the attack. Director General of Police, L Sailo reportedly mentioned that it was for the first time that terrorists have attacked using rockets, which were not RPGs, but presumably shoulder fired rockets.

A woman was killed and two security force personnel injured when unidentified terrorists attacked a security forces party at the Kukimun area in Bishenpur district on the eve of Republic Day. Official sources said heavily armed terrorists ambushed the security forces party on January 25 and in the ensuing encounter, a woman passer-by was killed. Massive combing operations were on to track down the terrorists who escaped into the nearby jungles.

Protesting the killing of civilians, a bandh (general shut down) was observed in the entire Sugnu area on April 23 and is reportedly expected to continue. A vehicle in the convoy was totally destroyed when the terrorists lobbed grenades at it. The soldiers, who included an officer, died on the spot. Sources Reports also said the terrorists looted five AK 47 rifles. A large posse of security force led by a senior official were reportedly rushed to the spot and have launched a massive combing operation to track down the fleeing terrorists.

According to media reports, the joint team led by the State police and the Assam Rifles were fired upon by terrorists. Following a fierce encounter three persons were reportedly killed while several suspected terrorists managed to escape. Though security reinforcements were rushed to the area from both Yairipok and Imphal to arrest the escaped terrorists, no progress has been reported. While the security forces claim that all the three killed were terrorists, family members of one of the dead claimed he was innocent and had gone to the house of his friend to watch television. On receipt of the news of the abduction, the second battalion of Assam Rifles (AR) swung into action, and in the ensuing encounter, in Chandmari locality, killed a terrorist, while a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the AR sustained injuries. Two top terrorists of the United Liberation Front of Asom’s (ULFA) Enigma Group were killed in an encounter in Ajanta Path area, in Guwahati, Assam, on October 30. According to media sources, the incident-site is very close to Assam Chief Minister (CM) Tarun Gogoi’s private residence. Police sources said they had been tipped-off about the arrival of the terrorists by a local businessman. The businessman informed police that the terrorists would be coming to his house to collect extortion money. The terrorists had also earlier abducted this businessman for the same reason. Sources said the terrorists suspected the presence of police personnel who were in civil dress and opened indiscriminate gunfire. Police personnel retaliated, and after a three-hour long encounter both the terrorists were killed. A police commando and two civilians were also injured in the incident.
