Around 200 leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami and ICS were arrested by the Police in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and several other Districts on February 12, as part of a countrywide combing operation following violence at Rajshahi University and Chittagong University (CU). In Chittagong, 96 Jamaat and ICS leaders and activists, including Chittagong city Nayeb-e-Ameer (deputy chief) Ahsan Ullah, were arrested and 61 persons were arrested in Dhaka while 35 others were taken into custody in Sylhet, Pabna, Tangail, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur and Rangpur Districts.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on February 26 arrested former Rajshahi City Corporation ward councillor and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Mohammad Gias Uddin from Rajshahi and Rajshahi University (RU) Habibur Rahman Hall Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) unit president Reazul Islam from Narayanganja District in cases filed in connection with the violence and murder on RU campus on February 9, 2010, reports Daily Star. The RAB officials claimed that during preliminary interrogation Reazul told them that the attack on Bangladesh Chhatra League on February 9 was carried out following a decision of JeI to capture eight dormitories of the university ousting Chhatra League men from there.

The personnel of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants from Bhairab in north Kishorganj area of Dhaka on July 17, reports Telegraph. The duo, Ranjan Chowdhury (45) and Pradip Marak (55), were taken into custody from the Lakkhipur area of Bhairab, RAB spokesperson lieutenant commander Mohammad Sohail said. A sophisticated pistol, a revolver and four small bombs were recovered from the duo, he said. The duo was arrested while they were waiting to board a bus to Sherpur District, he added. Chowdhury told RAB officials that he hailed from Madhusolmari at Gauripur of Dhubri District in Assam. He had joined ULFA in 1988 and undergone three months of training. “He then went to Bhutan to meet ULFA’s top commander (military wing) Paresh Barua in June 1995 and was arrested by Indian security forces on his return a month later,” Sohail said. Chowdhury was detained in a Guwahati jail for a year and released in 1996.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an explosive expert and its aide of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, identified as Wazed Khan alias Zafar alias Salman (27) and Abu Bakkar Siddique (49), in Dhaka’s Uttara area on October 10 with a huge amount of explosives and bomb making materials, reports Daily Star. It was the first arrest of any LeT bomb expert in the country, according to Commander Mohammad Sohail, RAB’s legal and media wing Director. He said the RAB had recovered 30 kilograms of high explosive with the capacity equivalent to trinitrotoluene (TNT) and six bottles of liquid chemical from their possession.

The arrestees are Parvez Ahmmed of Comilla, treasurer of the banned organisation; Faisal Kabir of Mymensingh; Masud Parvez of Shariyatpur; Erfan Ahmed, of Brahmanbaria; Mahfuzur Rahman, of Laxmipur, and Maksudur Rahman of Chittagong. The Officer in Charge (OIC) of Police said that the Police arrested them for carrying out activities for the banned outfit and planning anti-state activities. Two separate cases-- one for possessing explosives and another under the Anti-Terrorism Act-- were filed against them, the OIC added.
