According to media reports, tribal elders and religious leaders, ahead of a joint operation by US and Pakistani forces against the fleeing Al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorists in North Waziristan Agency, have vowed to fight back any move against raids on madrassas. At a meeting held at Idak madrassa, approximately 10 km from Miran Shah, Ulema (religious leaders) and tribal leaders of the agency warned the government of dire consequences if any of their madrassas were raided without their prior permission. Reports said tension is fast rising among the tribesmen and religious circles of the North Waziristan Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA) following the raid by security forces during the last fortnight on two of the madrassas. The forces may crack down on some more madrassas as part of the international coalition forces’ operation against suspected terrorists, said reports.

According to a report in Dawn, a Pakistani daily, the government has not ruled out the possibility of Al Qaeda's involvement in the May 8-suicide attack in Karachi. "The attack has all the markings of a well-trained international terrorist organization," Federal Interior Secretary Tasnim Noorani said, adding, "This kind of operation is not carried out by terrorist organizations operating within the country." Intelligence reports, unnamed senior Interior Ministry officials said, had warned that approximately 300 suicide bombers linked to the Al Qaeda and Taliban are present in the country and could carry out more suicide attacks. Official sources indicated, most of the terrorist cells of the Taliban and the Al Qaeda network had the capability to be activated at short notices and most of them are believed to have spread their networks away from the main theatre in Afghanistan.

According to media reports, the toll in the May 8-Karachi bomb blast has increased to 16 with the death of two minors being reported. Among those killed where 12 French navy men. Initial reports had said that German nationals were among those killed. Reports added that four Pakistanis, including a woman, were also killed in the blast. Police source further said a suicide car bomber was responsible for the blast which occurred near Club Road where two five-star hotels are located. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah said the incident was a suicidal attack as a car rammed into the Pakistan Navy bus while it was going to the Dockyard from Sheraton Hotel carrying French technicians. The car, which was reportedly loaded with high explosives, was allegedly a stolen vehicle. The identity of the suicide bomber has not been ascertained thus far. The French technicians belonging to the state-owned shipbuilding company, Direction de la Construction Navale, were working with the Pakistan Navy on a submarine project at Karachi Port. Police sources said they suspect that the Al Qaeda terror network of Osama bin Laden was behind the terrorist attack.

According to media reports, Pakistani authorities have banned the display of arms for the first time in the semi-autonomous northwestern tribal area bordering Afghanistan. According to a report in Dawn, a Pakistani daily, senior Inter Services Intelligence (ISI, Pakistan’s external intelligence agency), officials said in an interview on May 28 that senior Al Qaeda leaders are not concentrated along the Afghanistan borders as the US officials claim, instead, they have filtered across Pakistan into major cities. In an interview with New York Times at the ISI headquarters in Islamabad, these unnamed officials said "the battle at hand may be one for Pakistan itself." "Broadly speaking there is an anti-West, anti-American movement now in Pakistan…There could be danger to individuals. Terror strikes people. It could hit the president, or anyone," a senior ISI official told the paper. These senior officials reportedly dismissed the American view that Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders have regrouped in remote areas on the border after being driven out of Afghanistan by American-led forces. While referring to cross-border terrorism, one of the officials reportedly acknowledged that Pakistan had supported various terrorist groups active in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir
