According to a media report, the French police have claimed that they have arrested five persons, including two Pakistani nationals, in a raid on June 12 in two suburbs of Paris. The arrested persons are suspected of having links with the Al Qaeda terror network of Osama bin Laden. They are also reportedly linked to Markaz-Dawa-al-Irshad, parent organisation of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and other terrorist groups operating in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. All the five are being accused of having provided logistical support to Richard Reid, the British "shoe-bomber". He, on December 22, 2001, unsuccessfully attempted to blow up a bomb contained in his shoe inside an American Airlines flight to Miami that he had boarded at Roissy- Charles de Gaulle Airport outside Paris. The two Pakistanis were arrested from a discrete residence they maintained in a back alley in the suburb of Evry, located south of Paris. The other three persons were arrested from Mantes-la- Jolie, an urban neighbourhood west of Paris, which in the past has reportedly been an important centre of Islamist fundamentalists. The French police said they seized guns and rifles, a telescopic lens and two computers.

According to the US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Washington has no evidence about the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He said this while addressing a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar in Islamabad on June 13. According to him, "The information on this matter is a scrap of intelligence, and people say they believe al-Qaeda people are in Kashmir or in various locations…I do not have the evidence of al-Qaeda militants operating in Kashmir, as it tends to be speculative...it is not actionable...it is not verifiable. The US has no such evidence of al-Qaeda presence."

Pakistan on June 13 denied claims by visiting US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that Al Qaeda terrorists were operating in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. "It is absolutely incorrect," said military regime spokesperson Rashid Qureshi. According to him, "frankly there is no substance in this whatsoever. We don't know where this information has come from but it seems Indian propaganda is being believed… This is the typical Indian way to discredit the indigenous Kashmiri struggle for self-determination."

According to media reports, following a group called Al Qanoon claiming responsibility for the June 14-bombing outside the US Consulate General in Karachi, an American media report said the attack could be the work of a new coalition of terrorist groups, with possible links to the Al Qaeda. Reports further identified the new coalition as the Laskhar-i-Omar, named after Omar Shaikh, former leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), an accused in the abduction and killing of US journalist Daniel Pearl. The new grouping is suspected to have been formed by the survivors of three terrorist groups––Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), JeM and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) which were banned by Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf.

Hundreds of Al Qaeda terrorists are reportedly hiding in Pakistani cities after forming or renewing alliances with local Islamist extremist networks that have helped provide safe houses for communications, training and logistics, Los Angeles Times reported on June 16. US authorities reportedly said Al Qaeda has made similar efforts to regroup by merging with local Muslim extremist groups in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The report pointed that US intelligence analysts believe that Osama bin Laden and his top aides have found refuge somewhere along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

According to media reports, police have ruled out the possibility of suicide bombing in the June 14-bomb explosion near the US consulate in which 12 persons were killed and 51 others injured. Inspector General of Sindh Police Syed Kamal Shah said, on June 17, "So far, we have not found any evidence, which could lead us to believe that it was a suicide bombing." He clarified that there was no difference of opinion between agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local investigators. About the kind of bomb used in the attack, he said either a timer device was fitted to the explosive or a remote-controlled device was used to set off the bomb. He said police had not made any formal arrest, thus far, in this case. Shah, while not ruling out the possibility of the involvement of foreign hand, including people from Afghanistan, added Al Qaeda cadres might be present in Karachi and local groups might also have been involved.

Pakistan intelligence officials are interrogating five suspected Al Qaeda terrorists after arresting them in Peshawar on June 23. Two Arabic-speaking men, two Afghan nationals and a Pakistani were arrested in a raid on the Afghan Support Committee (ASC)––a non-governmental organisation in Pabbi, Peshawar. The ASC is a Kuwait-based group reportedly set up by Osama bin Laden. Senior ASC employee Hussein Halil of Jordan is still in custody after being arrested in Pabbi for suspected Al Qaeda links in the last week of May 2002. The US government had frozeb the ASC's assets in January 2002 for alleged links with Laden’s Al Qaeda terrorist network.

According to a report in Dawn, Pakistan has handed over to US authorities approximately 327 suspected Al Qaeda members since the launch of the US-led anti-terror campaign in Afghanistan in year 2001. Quoting official sources, the report said, over the last eight months Pakistani authorities arrested a total of 378 suspected Al Qaeda associates of whom 327 are now in US’ custody. Military intelligence sources reportedly confirmed the total tally and said Yemenis topped the list of those arrested. There are a total of 87 Yemenis and seven French nationals among the 327 suspected Al Qaeda associates, besides an undisclosed number of Sudanese, Saudi Arabian, Palestinian, Syrian, Libyan, Moroccan and Chechnyan nationals. These sources added that the arrested Al Qaeda members were transported by American authorities to an unknown foreign location where they were under interrogation. The highest-ranking Al Qaeda terrorist arrested thus far by Pakistani authorities is Abu Zubaydah, reported to be a close associate of Osama bin Laden. Zubaydah was arrested in Faisalabad on March 28, 2002 during a raid by a joint Pakistan-US intelligence team.

Ten Pakistan security force (SF) personnel and two Chechen cadres of the Al Qaeda terror network were killed in an encounter in South Waziristan Agency on June 26. According to media reports, SF personnel had raided Azam Warsak, a remote tribal area bordering Afghanistan, and arrested Al Qaeda terrorists hiding there. The operation followed reports that Al Qaeda terrorists had taken shelter in the house of Abdul Khaliq Sarkikhel Wazir, a resident of Kaza Paunga. In the ensuing encounter, 10 SF personnel and two terrorists were killed. Two other persons were injured during the encounter. Confirming the encounter, Assistant Political Agent Wana Anwar Ali Shah said "Our forces have lost 10 persons, five from the armed forces and five from the South Waziristan Scouts in the encounter last night." The other terrorists at the hideout managed to escape from the encounter site. Local residents indicated that there were approximately 35 of them in the hideout. This encounter is the first confirmation of the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists in tribal areas of Pakistan. Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that four American officials had monitored the operation in Azam Warsak, approximately 14km from the Wana Camp. The raid was reportedly based on tip-offs from US intelligence agents that 40 to 50 Al Qaeda fugitives from the March 2002-Operation Anaconda offensive in eastern Afghanistan were hiding in two buildings. SFs arrested a Chechen terrorist, identified as Muhammad Yahya, who reportedly claimed to be an Afghan from the Kunduz province. They also seized an 81mm mortar gun, an Al-Qaeda uniform and literature from the hideout.
