Booby traps that were being planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) party in the forests on the Telangana-Chhattisgarh borders have been posing a threat to the lives of adivasis, said the Bhadradri Kothagudem District Police, reports Telangana Today on June 11. Adivasis and their cattle, as well as their pets, were either getting killed or severely injured due to booby traps. It might be recalled that a dalit, Y Yesu, died when he stepped on a landmine planted by Maoists on the Karregutta hillock of Kongala forests in Venkatapuram Mandal (administrative subdivision) of Mulugu District on June 3. Similarly, two adivasi women suffered grievous injuries on their legs when they stepped on booby traps at a border village called Bhimavaram, while two cows and two pet dogs of adivasis died at Pusuguppa in Cherla Mandal. Following complaints from Adivasis about the danger posed to their lives by booby traps in the Pusuguppa area, Police inspected the area and found 70 booby traps and cleared them. Police have removed as many as 4,396 iron spikes planted in the ground, according to Additional Superintendent of Police (SP), Operations, T. Sai Manohar, and Bhadrachalam Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Paritosh Pankaj. Innocent Adivasi people living in the border areas were living in perpetual distress due to the atrocities of Maoists. As the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and booby traps planted by Maoists could cause harm to lives, tribals should be alert when they go into forests, they said.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) is locally manufacturing 12 bore cartridges made of iron and also using them as Barrel Grenade Launcher (BGL) ammunition in the forests of Narayanpur District to fight with Security Forces (SFs), officials said, adding that the cartridges were recovered in the recent encounter between the Maoists and the Narayanpur Police on June 7, reports Hindustan Times on June 11. On June 7, six Maoists, including three women, were killed in multiple encounters near Gobel and Thulthuli villages in the Orchha Police Station area. Police later claimed to have recovered two 303 rifles, one 315-bore rifle, 10 BGL (barrel grenade launcher) shells, one SLR magazine, a cooker bomb, five bags, and a huge cache of explosives, medicines, and items of daily use from the spot. “We have found these 12 bore iron cartridges from the recovery made on Friday (June 7), which they are probably using as ammunition for BGL or muzzle loading rifles. They are making it, and as iron is in abundance in Bastar, it is surely a matter of concern,” Sunderaj P., Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, said. He said the police are waiting for a detailed ballistic analysis of these iron cartridges. “In the recent encounter in the East Bastar Division of the CPI (Maoist) area, some locally fabricated ammunition has been recovered. Prima facie, it appears to be ammunition to propel BGL shells. A detailed ballistic analysis would be done to find out more details in this regard,” Sunderaj said. “Earlier, they used to smuggle or get BGL and other ammunition easily, but now it is very difficult. It shows that they are lacking ammunition. Secondly, the forces use highly sophisticated weapons; these ammunitions are nowhere in front of what security forces have,” said another Indian Police Service (IPS) officer working in the region. “The frequent use of locally made BGL and its ammunition by Maoists is a matter of concern for the security forces. As the success rate of such BGLs has gradually increased, the forces must counter them with appropriate measures. However, it is a matter of satisfaction that they have not been able to breach the perimeter security of our camps, which are war zones in Bastar,” said RK Vij, former Special Director General of Police (SDGP), Chhattisgarh.

Seven tribal hamlets of Bhamragarh taluka (revenue division) in the foothills of Abujhmarh, which houses People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) headquarters on the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, have banned the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from entering their hamlets under the government's ‘gaonbandi’ scheme of rewarding villages for not giving support or providing assistance to Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs], reports The Times of India on June 17. The tribal hamlets of Paraynar, Nelgunda, Kucher, Kawande, Gongewada, Midadapalli, and Mahakapadi are emerging out of Maoist influence after four decades of forced indoctrination in ultra-Left ideology and are waking up to the call of development. On June 14, they took a historic vow during a ‘krishi melava' or agricultural congregation at the Dhodraj Police outpost to shun Maoists and extend support to the Security Forces (SFs) in lieu of government benefits; this forms the bulwark of the 'gaonbandi' scheme. They promised to shut out Maoists, boycott their meetings, and ban their entry into villages, which are often used as launchpads for guerrilla operations, propagating ideology, or organising political and military training camps.

Chhattisgarh Police seized samples of counterfeit currency, printers, printing ink in large quantities, and other material from a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideout in the forests of Korajguda in Sukma District in the Bastar division of Chhattisgarh on June 22, reports Telangana Today. Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP), Kiran G. Chavan, told the media that based on a tip-off about counterfeit currency being printed by the Maoist Konta area committee, a joint team of district police, DRG (District Reserve Guards) Bastar Fighters, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 50 Bn carried out search operations in Mylasore, Korajguda, Danteshpuram, and nearby areas. On spotting the Security Forces (SFs), Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] escaped under the cover of the forests near Korajguda. Upon searching the area, one colour printer, one black and white printer, and one power inverter, 200 bottles of ink and bundles of fake currency of 50, 100, 200, and 500 denominations, four printer cartridges, nine printer rollers, and a gun were found, the SP said. In addition to that, six wireless sets, a magazine pouch, Maoist uniform cloth, and a huge quantity of explosive materials were recovered. The Police learned from the sources that in the year 2022, one or two naxal cadres of each area committee in west Bastar were trained to print fake currency by senior cadres. The fake currency was being circulated in the weekly markets of the Bastar region. Maoists who claim to be working for the interests of tribals were deceiving them by using fake money to buy the goods produced by them. Maoists were trying to damage the Indian economy by circulating the fake currency, Chavan added.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commanders’ have started using innocent villagers, taking advantage of the helplessness, and are involving them in their activities, reports etvbharat.com on June 29. The Maoist ‘commanders’ are trapping rural labourers and small businessmen in their net by giving INR 30, 000 to 40, 000 to each labourer for attacks and collecting ‘levy’ (extortion money). This plan has been made by top Maoist ‘commanders’ including Nitesh Yadav, Sanjay Yadav, Sunil Vivek, and Sita Rajwar. "The Maoists are luring innocent villagers and other people. Those who are getting lured do not know what incident they are getting involved in and what action can be taken against them. The Maoists want to take advantage of the helplessness of the villagers. The police are running a campaign against the Maoists and are also contacting the villagers one by one. The police are constantly appealing in the rural areas that people should not get lured by the Naxalites. The police have received information about the network of the Maoists, against which action is being taken," said Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishma Rameshan.
