The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is said to be extorting huge sums of money from civilians in the government controlled Jaffna peninsula, according to Daily Mirror. Despite the heavy military presence in the peninsula, LTTE agents were believed to be carrying out the extortion from shop owners and civilians with family members residing overseas, warning at times of dire consequences if the demands for money were not met. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) said it had also received information of continued trends of extortion in Jaffna over the past few weeks, adding that the amount demanded was reportedly increasing frequently. In July 2007, the SLMM said it had received complaints of extortion with extortionists demanding up to Rupees 500,000 from shop owners and people with relatives abroad. Apart from threats posed by LTTE extortionists, civilians in Jaffna also continue to face fears of abductions and killings by the LTTE and other groups. The weekly SLMM security assessment report noted that it had enquired into the situation of civilians seeking protection in Jaffna this week and found that there were currently 193 surrendees in the Jaffna region, of which 174 males and two females were at the Jaffna prison while the remaining 17, consisting of four families have been accommodated at a children’s home in Vaddukoddai.

The LTTE claimed that at least 10 soldiers were killed when the outfit’s cadres repulsed army attacks on a LTTE-held area in the Mannar district on December 5 and December 6, reports Reuters. "The Sri Lanka Armed Forces (SLAF) teams... retreated with heavy casualties. At least 10 of the SLAF men were killed and several others were wounded, front line sources confirm," said LTTE military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan in an email statement, and added that the outfit suffered no casualties in the fighting. The military, however, denied the clashes had taken place. "There is no such advance by the army and no such casualties to the army in that area," said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

Meanwhile, the government on December 19-evening confirmed that the LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran was injured in an aerial strike by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) on a hideout in Kilinochchi on November 26, reports Colombo Page. Issuing a press statement, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said: "Acting on reliable intelligence, the Air Force carried out a successful air strike targeting the leader of the LTTE, Velupillai Prabhakaran on 26th November 2007. Intelligence sources confirmed that Velupillai Prabhakaran had sustained injuries in the air strikes carried out by four attack aircraft of the Sri Lanka Air Force on a bunker complex in Jayanthinagar, Kilinochchi around 5.25 p.m. on 26th November 2007." However, the MCNS said, "Though the Air Force believed that Velupillai Prabhakaran had been hit in this attack, non availability of ground information to confirm such at that time prevented the Government from releasing this information to the media." The SLAF Commander Air Vice Marshal Roshan Gunathilake said that the SLAF strongly feels that the target was accurately taken by the fighter jets wounding Prabhakaran. "There was no room for anybody to escape unhurt due to the extent of damage caused to the location by the air raid", the Commander added.

The security forces continued to advance in the Vavuniya-Mannar sector on December 24, taking full control of Thampanai town on the Madhu road as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres in the area withdrew amid heavy fire, according to defence sources. The fall of Thampanai town is considered a major breakthrough in the efforts to flush out the LTTE from these areas and clear the path to Wanni, senior military officers said. Thampanai is three to four kilometres on the Madhu road from the Mannar-Vavuniya main supply route and stretches to nearly four kilometres. Troops earlier captured the Uyilankulam LTTE entry/exit point and a major LTTE base south of Periyathampane on December 22.
