However, unconfirmed military sources said that six soldiers were killed and another six wounded at a location just outside Palaly following the attack. Palaly is a strategic military base with an air strip and functions as the headquarters for Military operations against LTTE in the North. It is also the supply base for soldiers stationed in Jaffna peninsula.

Security forces (SFs) foiled a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attempt to carry out an aerial attack at the Palaly Air Base in Jaffna on April 24. According to the Jaffna Security Forces Commander, Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, the attack commenced at 1.05 am when 20 artillery rounds fired by the outfit began to fall inside and outside Palaly High Security Zone (HSZ) from the Pooneryn direction. "We took steps to neutralise the LTTE artillery fire making use of the beach craft which was on another mission in Jaffna to identify the artillery locations of the LTTE", he disclosed. Amidst artillery by the LTTE, troops also detected an aircraft arriving from the South of Jaffna peninsula towards Palaly Air Base at 1.20 am. The aircraft took the path along the marshy lands in Jaffna where lesser number of troops on duty, he said, adding, troops stationed at the Palaly HSZ opened fire towards the aircraft compelling it to change its path towards Thondamanaru area near the sea. The light aircraft dropped three bombs at Milady area killing six soldiers, he informed. "This is just an attempt by the LTTE to get publicity. We will take steps to destroy the aircraft with the fire power and strategies available with us", Major General Chandrasiri stated.

Troops targeted LTTE mortar and gun positions that had been attacking forward lines in recent days, said Lieutenant-Colonel Upali Rajapakse. He disclosed, "The Tigers got 15 killed in one place. At another place, five were killed, and at another one was killed," adding, two soldiers were killed and about 15 others wounded in the incident. Meanwhile, the LTTE spokesperson Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan, however, claimed, "Sri Lankan troopers tried to advance into our area and were confronted by our troopers. Two top Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leaders, identified as Eelamaran, leader in charge of Jaffna, and his deputy Udayan, were among six outfit cadres killed at Suruvil in the Kayts Island area of Jaffna district on April 29, reported Media Centre for National Security. According to reports, naval troops conducted a cordon and search operation following information about their presence in the area and as they were ready to enter the Amman Kovil/Puliyankadal premises with the Kovil incumbent they were fired upon by the outfit cadres from inside the Kovil. Naval troops retaliated with small arms which resulted in two explosions. In the operation all five LTTE cadres who were inside the Kovil were killed. The incumbent of the Kovil was also killed in the crossfire. Troops also recovered arms and ammunition from the incident site.
