Sri Lanka has requested India to provide assistance in the wake of the reverses suffered by the army. However, India has stated clearly that it would not commit its troops, as it did in 1987, to bail out the beleaguered Sri Lankan security forces.Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee went into consultations in New Delhi, on May 4, with those Tamil political parties that are constituents of the ruling alliance, on the stand the government should take, in the backdrop of Sri Lanka's appeal for assistance. At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister ruled out sending troops or selling arms to Sri Lanka, which is the preference of the Tamil political parties. However, he said dispatching humanitarian assistance––food, clothes and medicine––to Sri Lankan troops was being considered. Foreign Minister echoed a similar opinion in Parliament, now in session, while the India Air Force chief, Air Marshal Tipnis is scheduled to visit Colombo during the week ending 13 May.Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has appealed to Pakistan for help and has also renewed diplomatic ties with Israel.
