However, over half a dozen militants, including their ring-leader, identified as Irshadullah Waziri, managed to escape during the exchange of fire. “Waziri is an expert in making vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).” He is also TTP’s Sindh Chapter Chief, added Rao. Police claimed to have killed the militants plotting to conduct terrorist activities during Muharram processions. The explosion occurred outside the Islamic Research Centre Imambargah situated on the road intersection at the Ayesha Manzil in Federal B Area’s Block-6 in the limits of Gulberg Police Station. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) Police chief Saqib Ismail Memon on October 28 claimed to have arrested four suspects belonging to al Qaeda and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) accused of providing logistical support, funds and weapons to the attackers involved in the June 8, 2014, Karachi airport attack, reports Dawn. The suspects were identified as Sarmad Siddiqi, Nadeem, alias Burger alias Mullah, Asif Zaheer and Master Essa. They are accused of arranging accommodation in Shah Faisal Colony for the militants. CID official Raja Umer Khattab said that suspect Zaheer was arrested in the 2002 Sheraton bomb blast case in which French technicians working on a submarine project were targeted. He said he remained in prison for eight years and became a close friend of Ahmed Omar Saeed Shaikh, alias Shaikh Omar, who was convicted of kidnapping and killing United States (US) journalist Daniel Pearl. During a review meeting on October 30 regarding law and order situation in Central Police Office in Karachi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali was informed that due to targeted police actions, 572 criminals, dacoits, terrorists were killed in different encounters, whereas 16,986 have been arrested, from September 5, 2013, to October 29, 2014, reports Daily Times. The detail of the total arrested revealed that 1233 target killers, 342 terrorists, 424 extortionists, 95 kidnappers and 15892 other criminals were arrested. The report further disclosed that as much as 10156 arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the criminals and terrorists. The report further added that during the current year (2014) a total of 170 police personnel were killed while fighting against the crimes.
