Security Forces (SFs) recovered the dead bodies of a senior Taliban ‘commander’ and five of his accomplices from the Madyan area of Swat on March 1. Sources said that dead bodies of former Taliban ‘commander’ in Buner, Muhammad Alam, Matta tehsil (revenue unit) ‘commander’ Shamsul Haq, and their accomplices Abdullah, Muhammad Musafir and Sher Zaman were found at a roadside in Madyan area. Alam was carrying a head money of PNR 10 million. The ISPR said the Taliban militants were killed at around 4am (PST) in a clash with the SFs. Jihadi literature, two pistols and three hand grenades were recovered from them.

The Taliban militants detonated explosives planted around the house of a pro-Government tribal elder, Malik Zaliman Shah, in Aliabad area of Hangu District, injuring 10 members of the family. A Hangu bomb disposal squad official said that 70 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack. Malik Zaliman Shah was supporting the Government in the drive against the Taliban. The TTP claimed responsibility of the blast. TTP Orakzai Agency spokesman Ziaur Rehman told the media over the phone from an undisclosed location that tribal elders supporting the Government’s operations against the Taliban would meet the same fate.

Two important Taliban ‘commanders’, identified as Muhammad Tufail alias Abdullah and Muhammad Iqbal, were killed by Security Forces (SFs) in an exchange of fire during the ongoing Operation Spring Cleaning in Frontier Region (FR) of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 2, according to Daily Times. Muhammad Tufail alias Abdullah worked as a ‘commander’ for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Ziarat Kaka Sahib Chapter and was involved in missiles and rocket attacks on Nowshera Cantonment and in an attack on the ASC mosque in Nowshera. Muhammad Iqbal was a member of the TTP Bara Chapter. He was a key supplier of suicide jackets and explosives to Islamabad and other cities of Pakistan. He supplied explosives for 21 car bombings in Swat, Hazara and other cities.

Paramilitary Forces on March 3 claimed to have killed 38 Taliban militants during the weeklong Operation Spring Cleaning, reports Daily Times. Frontier Constabulary (FC) head Sifwat Ghayoor said that troops had seized control of the Taliban stronghold Pastawana near the garrison city of Kohat. The operation was launched by the Army and FC troops on February 24 to flush out terrorists from the area, he said, adding that 18 of the Taliban militants had also been arrested. He said that one soldier was killed while six others wounded in the operation. “The first phase of the operation is over. Security Forces are in complete control of the area,” he said, adding that troops would now conduct house-to-house searches from today (March 4).

The Army sources said Iqbal belonged to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) faction of Khyber Agency. “He was a key supplier of suicide bomb jackets and explosives to Islamabad and other cities of Pakistan,” the Army said. Security Forces (SFs) arrested 25 suspected militants, including three militant ‘commanders’, in separate raids in Ziarat Kaka Sahib and Badrashi areas of Nowshera District, reports The News. The sources said the law-enforcement agencies recovered arms, explosives and important documents from the arrested persons. The ‘commanders’ were identified as Maulana Arshad, Maulana Insaf alias Habib, resident of Darra Adamkhel and Shakeel alias Nasir. Maulana Arshad was reported to be the ‘deputy leader’ of militants operating in Nowshera and Charsadda under the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the sources said.

Local administration officials said the suicide bomber blew himself up when the civilian convoy, on its way to Parachinar and escorted by the Frontier Corps, slowed down at a speed breaker near a petrol station, some two kilometres from Tull city. Thirteen of the injured persons are said to be students of a local private school. Eyewitnesses said that the suicide bomber was on foot and was waiting near the petrol station. They said he detonated the explosives strapped to his body when the convoy passed by. "The target was a Shia convoy. This is sectarian violence," Kohat Division Commissioner Khalid Umarzai said.

Sources said that a suicide bomber walked into the office of a militia in Tank and blew himself up shortly after an anti-Taliban meeting. “One volunteer was killed and two others wounded. It was a suicide attack,” Liaquat Ali, a Police official in Tank said. An intelligence official in Peshawar confirmed the incident, saying the office belonged to Qari Misbahhuddin, brother of Qari Zainuddin, a late rival of former Pakistani Taliban ‘chief’ Baitullah Mehsud. Qari Zainuddin was shot dead by assassins in the northwest in June 2009, while Mehsud was killed in a US missile strike in August 2009.
