A series of three powerful blasts followed by heavy gunfight in a brazen suicide mission, apparently planned to target the US Consulate in Peshawar, left eight persons dead and 18 others injured in Peshawar, the provincial capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), in the afternoon of April 5, according to The News. A suicide bomber hit one Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) parked on the entrance to the Hospital Road, which hosts the US Consulate General as well as several offices of the Pakistan Army around 1.20 pm (PST). “The first suicide bomber exploded his car near the APC at the entry point to the Hospital Road after which unknown number of attackers coming in a double cabin pick-up drove towards the gate of the US Consulate while opening fire,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)-Operations Karim Khan said. The Deputy City Police Chief said another suicide bomber blew himself up hardly 20 feet away from the main gate of the US Consulate on the Hospital Road after the attackers failed to enter the building. He said the gate of the consulate was partially damaged in the blast. Those killed included two Frontier Crops officials, one Frontier Reserved Policeman and two passers-by, while three bodies could not be identified. According to SSP-Operations, around 20 kilograms of explosives were used in the first suicide attack while around 100 kilograms were used in the second one outside the main gate of the consulate. He was not sure about the nature of the third blast. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in reaction to the US drone attacks.

NWFP Police Chief Malik Naveed on April 9 said that Kala Dhaka is the new base for the Taliban, who fled the Army operation in Swat and other Districts in Malakand in 2009. “It (Kala Dhaka) is creating problems for us,” he expressed concern over the new base of the Swat Taliban who could make a comeback if not contained now. Kala Dhaka is part of Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) where the Government’s writ has not been established yet as neither a jirga (council) is effective nor do the Levies Force operate there. Further, the Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured the National Assembly that citizens would not be affected by the action against outlaws in Kala Dhaka, a tribal area adjacent to Hazara region. He said the operation would be aimed at eliminating criminals, proclaimed offenders and militants who were hiding there after being pushed out from Swat and Waziristan. Malik said action would be taken against the criminals who have taken refuge in Kala Dhaka area of the Hazara Division.

Two burqa-clad suicide bombers targeted a crowd of internally displaced persons (IDP) waiting to get themselves registered and receive relief goods at the Kacha Pakka IDP camp on the outskirts of Kohat in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on April 17, killing at least 44 and injuring more than 70, reports Daily Times. The bombers struck minutes apart at the Kacha Pakka IDP camp, where the NWFP Social Welfare Department was registering those displaced amid military offensives. Locals said the IDPs were from Kalaya, Sipah and Maraye areas of Orakzai Agency. A local journalist, Azamat Ali Bangash, who worked for the APP news agency and a local TV channel, was among those killed. Kohat Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdullah Khan said the bombers walked into the crowd wearing burqas, and blew themselves up “one after the other”. He said the first bomber detonated his explosives as IDPs gathered to register and receive relief goods. “A few minutes later, the second bomber blew himself up in the middle of the crowd that had gathered at the site of the first attack.” Meanwhile, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi’s Al-Aalmi faction claimed responsibility for the bombings, and cited the presence of Shias at the IDP camp as the reason for the attack.

Seven persons, including a child, were killed and 30 others injured in a suicide car bombing near the Saddar Police Station in Kohat of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on April 18, according to Daily Times. This is the second suicide attack during 24 hours after suicide bombers targeted an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp at the Kacha Pakka on the outskirts of Kohat. Police official Faizullah, who witnessed the attack, said the bomber wanted to target the Police Station, but had to detonate the explosives in the car early when officers tried to stop him. Faizullah said the explosion severely damaged the Police Station and a primary school. Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan said all those killed in the attack were civilians, while nine Policemen and two Frontier Corps personnel were among the injured. Qari Hussain, a top commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) who allegedly trains suicide bombers, called an Associated Press (AP) reporter from an undisclosed location hours after the blast to claim responsibility.

The first bomb exploded outside a school run by a Police welfare foundation in the Peshawar, killing a boy and injuring eight others. A bomb disposal squad (BDS) official said one-and-a-half kilogrammes of explosives packed in a schoolbag were used in the blast, which were detonated by a timed device. The second blast occurred at Qissa Khawani Bazaar of Peshawar when a suicide bomber walked into the crowd and detonated explosives.Capital City Police Officer Liaquat Ali said, “Just after the conclusion of a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) demonstration against load shedding, a young suicide bomber aged 14, walked towards a Police mobile Van and detonated explosives strapped to his body”. “Twenty-three people were killed including three Police officials. Peshawar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gulfat Hussain, JI city Naib (deputy) Ameer Dost Muhammad and JI Dir-Bajaur Qaumi Jirga (community assembly) Chairman Ghausur Rehman were among the dead.
