Talking to BBC on December 11 about the situation in Balochistan, Akbar Bugti said personnel from the Sindh and Punjab Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) had surrounded the province and could advance at any time. He said the number of FC personnel had been increased to 15,000 and that a part of the operation had started on a limited level in Turbat, Nushki and Kalat. Mengal, meanwhile, said the Government had shut down all political options and was now using force. He said he was ignorant about the Baloch Liberation Army and Baloch Liberation Front, but that he supported them morally as they are working for Balochistan’s cause.

However, he would not say whether there were any casualties among the insurgents and said it was too early to provide information about the offensive. Associated Press has reported that soldiers backed by helicopter gunship attacked a suspected insurgent hideout on the outskirts of Kohlu on December 18, but it was not immediately clear whether there were casualties.

According to a press statement issued by the AIM, helicopter gunship took part in the "military operation" in the area and the scope of the operation is being expanded. The AIM claimed that several Marri tribesmen, including an employee family of Nawab Marri, had been arrested from Quetta, while some arrests had also been made from Sibi. Security forces, comprising some 100 vehicles, have also reached Sibi from Quetta to take part in what was termed a "military operation". The AIM claimed temporary airbases have been set up in Kohlu, Barkhan and Sibi for the military operation. "There is no knowledge about the human losses because the areas are sealed and there is no media access to the area," it added.
