Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, ‘chief’ of the pro-Khalistan group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), claimed he was behind the “kill posters” aimed at Indian diplomats serving in Canada, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA), reports Times of India on July 7. Pannun vowed to avenge the killing of his associate Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) ‘chief’ who was shot dead in Canada on June 19, 2023. "Hardeep Nijjar was my younger brother and we had an association of more than 20 years. We will avenge his death," he said, after releasing a video shot in front of the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York in USA. He claimed responsibility for authorizing the posters but argued they did not incite violence. "We are going to put 'wanted' posters of these diplomats in every country where there is an Indian mission before August 15," Pannun threatened. "Our campaigners are in over 35 countries. We are going to bring banners and posters all over the world. On August 15, we will put out posters saying 'This is Indian mission - house of terror'," he added. The emergence of the video online followed widespread speculation regarding his alleged death.

Pro-Khalistan bot activity on social media is intensifying, focusing on targeting Indian diplomats and spreading conspiracy theories, reports Hindustan Times on July 20. Recently published research in April 2023, by Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), a United States (US)-based independent organization that forecast cyber-social threats, suggests that these bots were behind anti-India slogans and temple vandalism incidents of Khalistan supporters in 2022. Most 'Kill India' posters and threatening messages against diplomats originate from pre-programmed Pakistani bot accounts, spreading fake news to incite against Khalistan opposition without any connection to India, sources said. The bots also push conspiracy theories, like that of India being responsible for the bombing of the Air India flight 182, the Kanishka, on June 23, 1985.
