A member of the Galikonda local organising squad of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Korra Pandanna, was arrested while he along with three others were reportedly fixing landmines on a road near Lanka Pakala village in the G.K.Veedhi mandal (administration division) of Visakhapatnam district on July 1, reports The Hindu. However, the other three managed to escape. Police also seized a landmine, some letters and revolutionary literature from him. During interrogation, Pandanna revealed that he was involved in the incidents of blasting a coffee pulper unit and the murder of Gammili Venkata Rao of Pandirayi Kothagudem.

A member of the North Telangana Special Zonal Committee (NTSZC) secretariat of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), Chettiraja Papaiah alias Somanna, carrying head money of INR 1000000, was killed in an encounter with police in the Medaram forest area under Tadavai mandal (administrative division) of Warangal district on July 1, reports The Hindu. Police also recovered an AK-47, a pistol and four kit bags from the incident site. According to the Warangal district Superintendent of Police, Soumya Mishra, over 50 cases, including 15 under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), were registered against Somanna in Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and other districts of the State.

The Maoist shutdown on July 2, to protest against the killing of Maoist leader S. Rajamouli, is reported to have affected normal life in the tribal areas of Warangal district, where another top Maoist leader Chettiraju Papaiah alias Somanna was shot dead by police on July 1. As a precautionary measure, the state owned Road Transport Corporation suspended bus services to remote areas in the Maoist-affected districts of Warangal, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Khammam, Mahabubnagar and Visakhapatnam. Fearing Maoist violence, police also intensified combing operations in the agency areas and in Nallamalla forests in Guntur district, where the Maoists are reportedly trying to regroup.

According to New Indian Express, a ‘deputy commander’ of the special guerrilla squad of the Communist Party of the Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Kiran, carrying a head money of INR 50000, was killed in a encounter with the police at Rachakonda village in the Prakasam district on July 22. The Nallamala Forest Division committee secretary, Nagireddy Panduranga Reddy alias Sagar alias Pratap, was also injured in the incident. Two other woman dalam (squad) members were reportedly arrested at the same place, although there has been no official verification. The encounter occurred when 12 Maoists assembled near a stream at Rachakonda and were planning to observe a martyrs week from July 27 to August 3. Police also recovered two .303 rifles and two tapanchas (country made rifles) from the encounter site.

After working in the movement in various capacities, he surrendered to the police at Veldurthi police station in April 2005. However, after surrendering, Mariadas allegedly formed a gang and took to extortion. A case was registered against him at Amarabad police station in the Mahboobnagar district, in connection with which he was arrested a year ago.

Police neutralized the first dump at Choppakonda hamlet near Buradakota and the second at Tarniwada hamlet near Patakota. They also recovered one generator, 150 kilograms of gelatine, 25 electric detonators, solar panels with fuses, wire bundles, flashes and revolutionary material from the two arm dumps. Superintendent of Police B. Srinivasulu said that as a part of the Maoists ‘martyr’s week’ from July 28 to August 3, the police are intensifying operations in interior areas of Patakota, Tangankota and other areas and it was during one such operation that the police found the arms dumps.
