Four staff members of a private recording studio, belonging to the Hmar community, were abducted by the Kuki National Front (KNF) cadres belonging to its Zougam faction from Tuibong on April 1 for the refusal by the owner of the studio to pay the extortion amount of Rupees 200,000. The Mizo People’s Convention (MPC), in a press release, accused the Kukis of violating terms of a peace accord signed between Zomis and Kukis for restoring of peace and normalcy on October 1, 1998. The MPC alleged that the leaders who went to negotiate for the release of the abducted were assaulted and their vehicle confiscated. It further said that the abduction occurred despite the fact that Mizo leaders contributed Rupees 5,000 from each household to meet the demand of Rupees 2, 00,000 since March 30, 2006.

District superintendent of police Clay Khongsai said the encounter occurred while the SF team was conducting a search operation. A 9mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition was recovered from the killed militant. The SF team subsequently neutralised two militant camps located in the nearby area.
