The Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), a conglomerate of United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), reportedly asked all outfits in the region to put an end to extortion in the name of armed movement, starting from January 15, 2003. A statement issued on January 1 by the MPLF’s permanent body said its member-parties have already stopped collecting donations from the public in view of their economic hardship.

Quoting BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Manipur and Nagaland range, P.K. Misra, reports added that both the personnel––Assistant commandant Laloo Bhai and constable L. Nandakishore––had gone missing since January 8, and it was suspected they were killed. But they have now reported to the Sugnu camp with their weapons intact. Police swung into action when the mob reportedly tried to enter the central district of the State capital against any attempt to divide Manipur succumbing to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah’s (NSCN-IM) demand for inclusion of a sizeable area of Manipur in its notion of a Greater Nagaland. According to media reports, police used resorted to action agaginst the agitators in Thangmeiband, Uripok, Lamlong, Wangkhei, Yaiskul and many other entry points to disperse crowds. According to media reports, after receiving information on the abductions, BSF personnel stationed at Khongkhang swung into action and after a brief gun battle rescued the officials. However, unidentified gunmen fled the spot with a hostage––an FCI Deputy Director of Dimapur, Nagaland.
