Islamists in Bangladesh are reportedly demanding the cancellation of the first women’s football tournament being held at Kamalapur in the capital Dhaka since October 4. "We want the authorities to stop the women’s football tournament within 24 hours — otherwise we are going to surround the stadium where those games are taking place," Monirul Islam, spokesperson for the Islamic Constitution Movement, told AFP. "With this tournament they are degrading women in society and it is an attack on the values of Islam," he alleged. About 200 demonstrators from the movement demonstrated in Dhaka on October 5 demanding an immediate end to the tournament. However, Kamrun Nahar Dana, tournament secretary, said the event will go on as scheduled and added "All the Muslim countries are organising such events and even our prime minister and opposition leaders are women."

The opposition Awami League (AL) has reportedly rejected the judicial probe report on the August 21-grenade attack, saying the objective of the probe was only to "protect the government and hide the culprits." AL General Secretary, Abdul Jalil, told reporters in Dhaka on October 4 "The commission echoed Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s earlier statements, and the report in no way is acceptable." The Commission of Justice Joynul Abedin had submitted the report on October 2. Although the report was not made public, the Supreme Court judge who headed the commission gave his views on the investigation to the press, referring to an unexplained foreign force behind the grenade attack that killed at least 21 people and injured over 200, according to New Age.

RAB sources said they retrieved the arms and ammunition from the shanty owned by Abul Kashem and Akkas, alleged gunrunners who, however, managed to escape. Sources added that two bloodstained copies of the daily Manabjamin, carrying the news of the grenade attacks on an Awami League rally, were also found on the spot.
