According to Daily Star, the Saudi charity Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation continues to operate in Bangladesh despite its dissolution in Saudi Arabia on June 2 on suspicion of funding the Al Qaeda. The assets of Riyadh-based Al-Haramain are to be folded into a new group that will channel all Saudi charitable contributions abroad. Bangladesh police had arrested seven Al-Haramain operatives from its Uttara office in Dhaka during September 2002 after intelligence agencies reported their links to terrorist funding and trafficking in women and children under the veil of imparting Islamic education. However, they were reportedly released under 'external pressure'.

His arrest came a day after another Bangladeshi was detained in Tokyo on the same charges. According to Daily Star, police has arrested 32 suspected cadres of the vigilante Islamist group, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), training in a mosque from Shialia village in the Barisal district on June 30. Books, leaflets and other printed materials concerning Jehad were also seized from the incident site. Among the materials seized was a handwritten note titled "Surprise Action" which reportedly inspires the cadres to attack the Prime Minister's Office and police stations and fight paramilitary forces in the event of resistance. Some of those arrested were allegedly students of Barguna Government College and Barguna Alia seminary, while the rest came from the northwestern districts of Rajshahi, Sylhet and Bogra. Police have also arrested Mostafa Hasan, a teacher of Tiakhali Halta seminary, who was coordinating the training, and Al Ullah, local coordinator of the militant activities.

Former Prime Minister and Opposition leader, Sheikh Hasina, alleged on June 30 that Islamic militant groups, patronised by the Government, are planning an armed uprising in Bangladesh. "Why should I foresee? The radicals and fanatics are already there and being patronised by the government. They have already captured different areas where you cannot move freely, work freely…" she told a reporter during a news conference in Dhaka. Hasina also said that vigilante Islamist leader Bangla Bhai has introduced a parallel rule in northern Rajshahi with the police and Government giving them shelter.

According to police sources, Shahin, alleged leader of the outlawed Biplobi Communist Party (BCP), was killed in an encounter near Kolbaria bridge. Two other regional leaders of the outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddha faction) were killed in a gunfight with security forces’ at Atharokhada village.
