According to official sources, approximately seven persons were killed and about 100 injured on February 6, in a clash between Islamic fundamentalists and security force personnel that erupted for the second day at Brahanbaria in Bangladesh bordering the State of Tripura, India. Most of the injured belonged to the Islamic Oikya Jote (IOJ), an alliance of Islamic fundamentalist outfits, which had enforced the shutdown while demanding the release of several top fundamentalist leaders in Dhaka. The violent incidents are a fall out of the nation wide strike called on February 3, in which a police personnel and two others were killed. The IOJ launched its campaign last week against a December, 2000 High Court verdict banning fatwas ( religious edicts) by Muslim clerics. Meanwhile, the government has constituted a three-member enquiry committee to investigate the incidents. Different political parties and Islamic organisations including Bangladesh National Party (BNP), Jamaat-e -Islami Bangladesh, Islami Oikya Jote and Khelafat Andolan in separate statements have condemned the killings and held the government responsible for the incident.

The tribal abductors of three foreign nationals have sent replies to the letters sent by the local leaders and have agreed to hold talks with the authorities concerned provided the army was withdrawn. A senior official today reiterated that no ransom would be paid, as had been demanded, but the government might consider not to charge the abductors under the tough Public Safety Act (PSA). No group has so far claimed responsibility for the abduction but officials suspect that a group led by former Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) leader Proshit Khisha is behind the abduction. Seven abductions occurred in Bandarban district after the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord was signed showing that the terrorists are gaining in strength there.

A Bangladeshi newspaper, Bhorer Kagoj, said, on February 27, that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed has sought an early end to the crisis surrounding the abduction of three Europeans, even at the cost of 1.6 million dollar ransom. Sheikh Hasina instructed negotiators to find a peaceful settlement to the issue. Unidentified tribesmen abducted the Europeans on February 16 in Rangamati hill district. The abductors, meanwhile, reportedly changed their hideout in the Kalapahar area, taking the hostages along with them. Also, security has been stepped up in Rangamati town after an anonymous caller rang up the police and threatened to bomb hotels where several foreign and local journalists are staying to cover the hostage crisis.

Bangladesh has rejected the Indian Supreme Court's comment that incidents of illegal immigration by Bangladeshis into India was increasing and they were posing a threat to the country's economy and security. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Abul Hassan Chowdhury told the BBC that it was not right to give a statement on the comment of a court of a foreign country. At the same time, he said no illegal infiltration by Bangladeshis into India had ever taken place in the past. On February 26, a three-judge bench presided over by the Chief Justice of the Indian Supreme Court made the comment during a hearing on a public interest litigation filed by an Indian national.
