United States (US) President Donald Trump on September 7 said he called off peace negotiations with the Taliban after the group claimed responsibility for the Kabul car bombing which killed 12 people, including an American soldier, reports Bhaktar News Agency. In a series of tweets, Trump said he also cancelled a "secret meeting" with the Taliban representatives and a separate meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David on Sunday. "Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday (September 8). They were coming to the United States tonight," he said. "Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great-great soldiers, and 11 other people. I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations," Trump said in another tweet. Meanwhile, Taliban has called United States (US) President Donald Trump’s decision for calling off peace talks as ‘surprising’, claiming that the call will surely harm his credibility, reports Khaama News Agency on September 8. Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the political office of Taliban in Doha said they finalized the agreement with Taliban few days ago. Shaheen further added that the leaders of the two teams handed over the draft agreement to Qatar. Furthermore, Shaheen said the leaders of both teams were satisfied with the draft agreement and it was decided that the authorities in Qatar will announce the deal.

Peace and reconciliation cannot go forward in an atmosphere of terror, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin said on September 10, reports The Hindu. “There is a surge of violence in Afghanistan in recent days, including threats to the election process itself. This has deepened apprehensions that acts of terror are being used to jockey for a place of advantage in the negotiating process...The support and safe havens enjoyed from beyond Afghanistan’s borders by groups such as the Taliban, the Haqqani Network, Da’esh, as well as Al-Qaeda and its proscribed affiliates, including the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, must be addressed,” he said, without naming any country. He further added that India supports U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for direct talks since it is the Afghan people who will implement and bear the consequences of any agreements arrived at.

On September 23, some Member of Parliament, and officials from the Political Committee of the Political Parties, said that the recent security report by the Afghan security institutions labeling 431 centers as “too dangerous” is suspicious, reports Tolo News. Earlier on September 20, the Afghan Independent Election Commission (IEC) in a report said that 431 polling centers out of 5,373 are to remain closed on election day due to insecure regions in the country. Critics also argue that most of the polling centers in Afghanistan’s central and southern regions are located in areas where the insurgents have a strong presence, however, the number of closed polling centers doesn’t seem to reflect this. The IEC had further said that 675 centers face high-security threats and another 907 centers are under medium threats.
