Rival militants attacked offices of a pro-government militant, killing nine and wounding eight of his men on January 6- night, according to Dawn. The attackers first stormed the office of Maulana Nazir in Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, and killed three of his supporters and injured four others, sources said. The militants, reportedly equipped with rockets and heavy weapons, launched another attack on the office of Nazir’s close associate, Maulana Khanan, in Shakai town, killing six people and injuring five others. A spokesman for Maulana Nazir blamed Baitullah Mehsud’s supporters for the attack and asked all Mehsud tribesmen to leave the Wazir tribe-dominated areas to avoid bloodshed. "We suspect Baitullah and his Uzbek supporters for this gruesome attack which left nine Mujahideen dead," Lala Wazir said. A large number of attackers, he said, came from the Mehsud area at night and attacked the local peace committee offices in Wana and Shakai. Local people said that Nazir’s supporters later shot dead an associate of Baitullah Mehsud and captured four others in Wana. Maulana Nazir belongs to the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe and has great influence in the region and virtually controls Wana. His supporters, backed by security forces, had launched a drive against Uzbek militants in the area in April 2007. The week-long armed clashes between Nazir’s supporters and Uzbeks had left over 160 people dead. Sources said that the latest incident could trigger a tribal feud after Nazir asked tribesmen hailing from the Mehsud tribe to leave the Ahmadzai Wazir dominated areas by 8am on January 8.

Troops also traded fire with militants at another fort in Ludda in South Waziristan after the Taliban fired rockets and small-arms. Local security officials said clashes continued on January 16-night in Sararogha, Ludda and another nearby village but there were no immediate reports of casualty or damage. Military spokesman Major General Abbas said the SFs were searching for 15 paramilitary soldiers missing since the attack in Sararogha. He said five of the 20 missing men were reported to have reached villages in the area. He said there was no confirmation of the militants’ claim that they had captured 12 paramilitary soldiers.

Terrorists targeted the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) at Kamra in the Punjab province on January 17-morning, firing four rockets at short intervals, Dawn reported. One of rockets landed on the roof of the senior non-commissioned officers’ mess and two others hit airmen’s residences inside the Mirage Rebuilt Factory. The fourth rocket exploded in a field near the Qutba village, close to the Kamra Cantonment. However, no casualty was reported. District Police Officer Tariq Hanif Joya said the rockets had been fired from a place about five to eight kilometers north of the cantonment. He said that security agencies were looking for assailants in the nearby villages, including Jatyal, Samah and Nullah Chail. This is reportedly the second incident of terrorism targeting the Kamra cantonment in a little more than a month. On December 10, 2007, seven people, including four children, were injured when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a PAC school vehicle outside the Kamra facility.

In the adjacent North Waziristan, two SF personnel were killed and 10 others injured when militants fired rockets at a military fort in Razmak. Sources said the militants attacked the Razmak army camp, 75 kilometers south of agency headquarters Miranshah, around 1pm. After the attack on the fort, two fighter jets bombed mountainside villages nearby, killing one civilian. The military spokesman, however, said jets had flown reconnaissance missions, and no bombs were dropped. Further, a spokesman for Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud, Maulana Muhammad Umar, said the militants captured 13 soldiers in the action, a claim denied by the military. “We will target sensitive installations in Islamabad, including the headquarters of intelligence agencies, if the military does not stop its operation,” Umar told Dawn from an undisclosed location. He claimed that the militants were still holding the Sipla Toi and Sararogha forts they had captured last week. He warned that militants would intensify their attacks and would capture all pickets and forts in the Mehsud area of South Waziristan. He also claimed responsibility for the murder of a senior official of the Intelligence Bureau in the Charsadda district of NWFP on January 20.

Around 20 militants were killed by the troops during clashes in the Darra Adam Khel and Kohat areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 26, according to Daily Times. Gunship helicopters pounded suspected Taliban positions in the mountains near Darra Adam Khel and Kohat district, eyewitnesses and the military spokesman said. Security officials said the militants had taken position at hilltops overlooking Darra and Kohat and were using long-range rockets to target civilians in Kohat city. Meanwhile, Abdullah Halafi, a self-proclaimed spokesman for a Taliban group, threatened the militants would launch attacks on government forces in the Khyber Agency if attacks on their comrades in Darra did not stop. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that the Kohat Tunnel was in the control of militants. Abbas said security forces were progressing and operation for the control of the tunnel would be launched any time soon. Reports, however, said the tunnel – also known as the Pak-Japan Friendship Tunnel – was only attacked and damaged by militants. The extent of damage to the tunnel was, however, not clear.

At least 10 suspected militants were killed in a missile strike on a house in South Waziristan early on February 28, according to Daily Times. The dead were believed to be of Pakistani and foreign origins, residents and officials said. The attack occurred at approximately 2AM in Kaloosha village, 10 kilometres west of Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan. "Nine militants were killed instantly while a wounded Punjabi militant passed away hours later in a local hospital," the residents said. Security officials also put the toll at 10. However, local news agencies reported that 13 people were killed in the attack and several others injured. It is the second such attack in the area after militant commander Nek Muhammad was killed in a missile attack in June 2004. Resident Sharifullah said three missiles hit the house of Afghan national Sheroo, who hailed from the Zalikhel tribe, which is allegedly harbouring foreign and local militants. "There was no immediate information about the presence of any high-value target," an unnamed official told AFP. Armed militants cordoned off the incident site after the missile strike, the residents said, adding that four unidentified ‘guests’ had arrived late on February 27 at the destroyed house. Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP that the deaths were caused by explosive material stored in the house, adding that 10 to 12 people were killed in the blast. "As per our information it was an explosion caused by explosive material in the house." However, a security source based in Peshawar said that the missile was fired by a US drone at about 2am. A spokesman for the United States-led coalition force based in Afghanistan said it had "no reports" that either it or the separate North Atlantic Treaty Organisation-headed force were involved in the strike. Sources said that the militants belonged to the Abu Hamza group whose leader was said to be a follower of local militant commander Maulana Nazir, according to Dawn. Nazir won government’s support after launching an armed campaign against Uzbek militants in the Ahmadzai Wazir area in April 2007. A spokesman for Nazir denied the killing of Arabs or Turkmens in the attack and said that some Afghans had died. "They were common Afghans and had been living in the area for a few years." He claimed that missiles had been fired from Afghanistan.

According to The News, at least 10 people were killed and six others injured when dozens of armed men belonging to the Khyber Agency-based Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) attacked Shiekhan village on the outskirts of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with rocket launchers and other sophisticated weapons before bulldozing a shrine and four houses on March 3. Some sources put the death toll at 16 and said 15 of the deceased were villagers. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse hundreds of angry villagers who blocked the main Bara Road to register their protest against the LeI militants. "Dozens of armed men of Mangal Bagh-led militant organisation attacked Shiekhan village at around 11.30 am. The villagers, mostly unarmed and unprepared, resisted the assault that resulted into a fierce clash between the rival groups," said a police official. While the militants used rockets and mortar shells besides machineguns and AK-47 assault rifles, the villagers retaliated with rifles. The heavy fighting that continued for hours restricted hundreds of villagers in the nearby areas to their houses. Students in the local schools were also confined to their institutions. Before fleeing to their stronghold Bara in the Khyber Agency of FATA, the LeI militants bulldozed four houses and set ablaze a shrine after razing its building. The Mangal Bagh-led LeI group had reportedly warned the villagers against the stay of a saint, Pir Abdul Hakeem, in the Dani Baba Shrine. The saint is among six people, including a woman, who sustained injuries in the attack. The attack is the first by LeI in the settled part of Peshawar. Mangal Bagh, the head of the LeI, has been enforcing his own brand of Islam in his areas for about two years, according to Dawn. Locals told Daily Times that Shiekhan is home to supporters of Pir Saifur Rehman, who was expelled from Bara in 2007 under immense pressure from the LeI.

Five militants were killed in a clash with the security forces (SFs) at the Nakai check-post in the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on March 3, according to Dawn. An official said that SFs had stopped a car at the check-post, about 12 km north of Ghalanai, the Agency’s headquarters, and told its five occupants that they needed to be frisked, but the latter refused. He said that some tribal elders headed by Malik Rehman, the father of MNA-elect Bilal Zaman, went to the place and attempted to resolve the issue. Their efforts failed and the militants subsequently tried to escape. Consequently, The SF personnel fired a rocket on the car, killing the five.

A curfew has been imposed in the Hangu district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) province after clashes erupted between Shia and Sunni Muslims during a Nauroz (Persian New Year festival) procession on March 21, leaving four dead and 28 others injured, reports Daily Times. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition. The violence erupted after members of the Shia community of the region came under fire as they hoisted a flag on a mosque to mark Nauroz. Locals said the Nauroz celebrations were going on peacefully at a madrassa (Seminary) when they were fired upon with rockets and mortar shells, APP reported. “We have clamped an indefinite curfew and summoned troops to restore peace. The situation is tense,” local police officer Akbar Ali told AFP after the incident. He said sporadic firing continued despite the curfew. The district co-ordination officer of the region also called a jirga (council) that successfully negotiated a truce between Sunnis and Shias of the area. The cease-fire is to last five months. Each sect has deposited PKR 1 million with the jirga as a form of surety bond.

Hundreds of Taliban militants attacked a security check-post near the Afghan border late on August 6, sparking fierce clashes in which up to 10 soldiers and 25 militants were killed, officials said on August 7, Daily Times reported. The security forces (SFs) had deployed a large force at Loyesam, 12 kilometers from Khar, headquarters of the Bajaur Agency in FATA, in a bid to reclaim important nearby Taliban strongholds. A Frontier Corps officer told AFP that 300-400 militants armed with AK-47 assault rifles, rocket launchers and grenades, participated in the attack. "The firing continued the whole night. This morning reinforcements were sent. One vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device on its way to the post and the convoy was then attacked by Taliban militants," the official said. "Up to 25 militants were killed and at least 10 Frontier Corps soldiers have also been martyred," an unidentified security official told AFP. However, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Maulvi Umar said 18 SF personnel were killed, a claim that is yet to be ascertained independently. Umar said the Taliban would use all resources to regain control of Loyesam area. He also claimed that 17 SF personnel had been held hostage, five of them with severe injuries, Dawn reported.

Three security force (SF) personnel and eight militants were killed and 17 SF personnel sustained injuries in a gun-battle which followed a Taliban attack on a police checkpoint on the Bannu-Miranshah road in Bannu district on late November 29-night, Dawn reported. Police said the militants attacked the Baranpul checkpoint with rockets and mortars, killing three SF personnel and injuring 17 others. Bannu District Police Officer Mohammad Alam Khan Shinwari said the Taliban escaped with the bodies of seven militants, leaving one body behind. The Taliban also carried out another attack on November 30 but were repulsed. Ahmadullah Ahmedi, a spokesman for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (Hafiz Gul Bahadar group), claimed responsibility for the attacks, which he said would continue till US drone attacks were stopped. He also said the agreement reached with SFs in North Waziristan would not be violated and attacks on Government installations and functionaries would be carried out only in the settled areas of the country.

At least 171 vehicles of the US-led NATO forces, including 62 armoured personnel carriers, were torched by armed attackers in two parking bays on the Ring Road in the vicinity of Pishtakhara in Peshawar on December 7- morning, The News reported. Around 130 vehicles were completely destroyed in the attack, while 40 others were partially damaged. The attack is the biggest ever on NATO logistics in Pakistan, during which a watchman was killed while two others were injured when they offered resistance to over 300 attackers, who were armed with rocket launchers, hand grenades, petrol bombs and AK-47 rifles. A worker at the Port World Logistics on Ring Road near Pishtakhara said 106 vehicles were parked in their parking lot, including trucks, Humvees, cranes, fire brigade trucks and jeeps. Over 60 other vehicles were parked at the Al-Faisal Terminal, located across the Ring Road. A worker of the Port World Terminal said that over 300 armed men fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the main gate of the parking lot and after breaking in, opened indiscriminate fire on watchmen, killing one on the spot and injuring two others. He added that the attackers later fired rockets at the parked vehicles, hurled petrol bombs and sprinkled fuel on the trucks to set them ablaze. The firing of rocket launchers and automatic weapons that started at around 3:15 am (PST) continued for almost 45 minutes. The attack is second in the past week after the December 1 similar assault when two drivers were killed and 15 NATO trucks were set ablaze. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan had warned of attacking the NATO supplies through Pakistan if the American forces did not stop the missile strikes in FATA and parts of the NWFP. Since then, NATO trucks were attacked twice on the Ring Road, two kilometers away from the Peshawar Cantonment.

Further, suspected militants fired two rockets, hitting the Bajaur Press Club and causing damage to the club’s building, The News reported. The attack did not cause any loss of life as journalists had long stopped visiting the press club due to the adverse security situation. The militants reportedly wanted to target the security forces who had set up a bunker on the roof of the press club building, which is close to the heavily-guarded Government offices, the political agent’s office and residence and military camp. The rockets fired from an adjoining village fell inside the press club building and exploded, damaging the windowpanes of the building and causing damage to its walls and doors.

Taliban militants killed three Pakistani truckers returning after transporting fuel to NATO forces in Afghanistan, officials said on December 20, according to Daily Times. The attack occurred on in the night of December 19 when Taliban militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at two oil tankers in the Landi Kotal area of Khyber Agency in the FATA, when they were coming back from the Afghan border, said Fazal Mehmood, a Government official in Khyber. The three Pakistanis were ferrying their vehicles back to Pakistan without the para-military escorts that often accompany the convoys on their way to Afghanistan, Mehmood added. Despite the increasing attacks on supplies, about 60 trucks crossed the border on December 20, a Government official in Khyber said.
