At least four rockets landed near a court and the Government complex in Khar, the main town in Bajaur, local administration chief Israr Khan told AFP. “The attack left four civilians dead and 16 injured,” Khan added. APP reported officials as saying that at least six rockets were fired on Civil Colony, where Government offices and residential quarters for officials are located. One of the rockets, the officials said, hit the office of FATA Rural Development Programme. Further, Security Forces reportedly continued targeting Taliban hideouts in various parts of Bajaur.

At least 40 Taliban militants were killed and an unspecified number of them wounded in Mohmand Agency on January 11 as paramilitary troops repulsed a pre-dawn attack by about 600 militants coming from the Afghan border, Daily Times reported. The attackers – mostly foreigners, and supported by local Taliban – attacked Frontier Corps (FC) positions in Mamad Gatt at about 2am (PST). “Frontier Corps troops repulsed a massive attack by militants on one of its locations in the area,” the military said in a statement, adding that “severe fighting continued through the night”. Six soldiers were also killed and seven sustained injuries in the fighting. The Taliban fired mortars and rockets at an FC camp and subsequently used small arms to fire on a nearby checkpoint, an unnamed military official told AP. The attackers were eventually driven off, but scattered skirmishes continued, he said. Most of the attackers fled under heavy military fire, a security official told the AFP. Some of the Taliban militants surrendered, a military spokesman claimed later, without giving a specific figure. According to sources, militants from Waziristan also took part in the attack, Dawn reported. Officials said it was one of the biggest militant attacks since the Security Forces launched an operation in the region. Sources also said that five soldiers were missing, but an official in Peshawar, the NWFP capital, denied the report. The building of a school near the targeted FC location was also reportedly damaged.

In the provincial capital Peshawar, after paramilitary troops were withdrawn from NATO terminals on the Ring Road for Muharram, militants once again launched attacks on parking bays of two terminals in the wee hours of January 13, firing six rockets. “Militants attacked the Faisal Terminal and the Khyber Ittifaq Terminal at midnight with rockets from the nearby fields. Four containers were gutted in the Khyber Terminal and two in the Faisal Terminal,” a Police official told The News. Two of the containers were empty while the rest were filled with different items being trans-shipped for the allied forces in Afghanistan. Police rushed to the spot, the unnamed official said, and engaged the attackers. Firing from both sides continued for quite some time after which the attackers fled.

Supplies to western forces in Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass were briefly suspended on January 19 after the Taliban attacked an army camp in Landikotal in the Khyber Agency, killing a soldier and injuring 10 others, an official told Reuters. A Government official in Khyber had said early on January 19 that supplies through the pass had been suspended indefinitely after the Taliban attacked a military camp with rocket-propelled grenades, Daily Times reported. But he later said the route had been reopened after Security Forces arrested 10 men suspected of carrying out the attack. An unnamed official told AFP that the Taliban launched the pre-dawn attack on the Security Forces’ camp close to the Torkham border crossing. “The rebels fired eight rockets on the camp,” the official said.

Army engineers on February 4 built a temporary alternate route for traffic, including NATO trucks bound for Afghanistan – a day after the Taliban blew up a key bridge in Khyber Agency – as suspected Taliban torched 10 containers they thought were loaded with NATO supplies near Landikotal, Daily Times reported. In Landikotal, suspected Taliban militants doused with petrol 10 containers they thought were carrying NATO supplies, and set them ablaze. With most of the containers reportedly empty and only two loaded – four were completely destroyed and the remaining was partially damaged. The containers were torched as a security camp and bunkers in the mountains nearby came under attack. However, no casualty has been reported. According to an intelligence official, more than ten rockets, missiles and mortars were fired at the camp and outside the cantonment.

Sources said militants fired three rockets at the Babozai check-post, killing a soldier, Mirdad, and injuring two others. SFs also retaliated and an exchange of fire continued for sometime, during which heavy weapons were reportedly used. Reports said several shells fell at the main gate of the Government Girls Primary School Qasimkhel and nearby houses on the outskirts of Darra Adamkhel, killing at least 13 persons, including 11 children, and injuring about 38 others. Four of the injured died at a hospital in Peshawar. In a statement issued from Kohat, the ISPR said militants fired mortar shells which killed 13 civilians and injured several others when they hit some houses in Darra Adamkhel. An AFP report added that SFs denied involvement in the shelling. “No military operation is currently underway in the area,” an unnamed security official said.

Security Forces (SFs) on July 20 claimed to have killed around 100 Taliban militants in a massive military operation in a cluster of villages in the Maidan area of Dir Lower District in the NWFP, The News reported. Military sources said the SFs launched action in five villages of Maidan to dislodge the militants from their hideouts as they were launching rocket attacks from there on the Scouts Fort in Timergara. “We have inflicted huge human loss on them. According to the information we have received, the casualties of the militants must not be less than 100,” a military official stationed in the area said. He said a large number of foot soldiers backed by tanks, artillery and mortars stormed the positions of the militants in Sherkhanay, Shedas, Misrikhanay, Sangolai and Saparay on July 19. The official said troops continued their operation for around 18 hours to destroy the Taliban hideouts. “They had built bunkers and other hideouts in the area from where they used to launch rocket attacks on the (Scouts) Fort in Timergara,” he said. “Security forces wrested these areas, including the strategic Saparay Top and Point 1260 (a mountaintop),” the official said, adding the militants had been on the run in the area. He said during the action, some 100 militants had been killed. Some 250-300 Taliban militants were hiding in these five or six villages, according to the official.

A paramilitary commander separately told AFP that the operation was launched after militants fired rockets at a paramilitary checkpoint early on August 10 in an assault in Peshawar, the NWFP capital, that killed two civilians, The News reported. The pre-dawn rocket attack targeted a Frontier Corps base in the city’s Hayatabad neighbourhood, Peshawar Police chief Sifwat Ghayur told AFP. “One rocket landed harmlessly inside the post but three others strayed into the residential area, killing two men and wounding three others,” Ghayur said. Taliban militants also fired rockets and mortars towards a military post in the nearby tribal district of Bara but there were no casualties or damage, a military official said earlier. Three Taliban militants were killed when troops returned fire, the official told AFP. Hayatabad is close to the Bara town.

India for the time is said to have struck back with machine guns when Pakistan in the night of September 11 reportedly fired two rockets into border villages of Punjab near Wagah sector, the second such provocation in two months, reports Times of India. The unsettling attack from a belligerent neighbour came on a day when the Border Security Force (BSF) had deployed its first batch of women along the border. However, no causality was reported till news last came in at 11.45 pm, (IST) stating that Pakistan had fired three more rockets which were yet to be traced. “Earlier, two rockets were fired from the Pakistani side, one falling in Dhanoae Khurd and the other is yet to be traced,” said BSF, Inspector General (IG), Frontier, Himmat Singh. As India opened fire from Pul Kanjari end, losing patience over repeated violations during peace times between the two nations, the IG confirmed, “During my tenure, this is the first time that BSF has retaliated.” Swinging into action, Police laid down barricades on roads leading up to the border, disallowing even the media to cover the incident. Calling for an emergency flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers, sources said, BSF strongly protested the unwarranted firing. The last time Pakistan had breached border rules was in the night of July 5, when three rockets landed on the Indian side — one each in Dhandae, Baherwal and Konake — while another failed to make it and fell in the attacker’s territory near Pul Kanjari. However, Pakistan's Border Security Forces on September 12 (today) rejected a contention by their Indian counterparts that several rockets were fired into Indian Territory from across the border in the Wagah sector. A meeting between the sector commanders of Pakistan Rangers and Indian BSF over the issue remained "inconclusive", a spokesman for Pakistan Rangers said. The BSF officials had maintained that some rockets were fired from Pakistani said early this morning but the Rangers official had denied this, he said. The sector commanders met a little after 1 am (IST) following reports of three major explosions in the Wagah sector.

Fierce fighting was reported from the Sherwangai area in South Waziristan Agency as troops started their advance towards the militants’ strongholds on the Shakai-Ladha axis on October 23, the seventh day of the Operation Rah-e-Nijat, according to The News. The Army claimed killing 13 militants, raising the casualty toll of the Taliban to 142 since October 17. However, the Taliban said only three of their men were killed since the launch of the operation. However, claims from both sides could not be confirmed. After three days of fighting, Security Forces (SFs) were seen in full control of Sherwangai, its surrounding heights and the nearby village of Chalweshtai where troops had been deployed on the mountain peaks to avoid militants’ attacks from different directions, sources said. Fighter jets and artillery targeted suspected militants positions in Mashta, Ragh, Sam, Srarogha, Penga, Ladha and Makeen areas, but there were no reports about casualties. A statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that 13 militants and two soldiers were killed in clashes and rocket fire in and around Kotkai, Sherwangai and Chalweshtai areas. Seven soldiers sustained injuries in the fighting. The ISPR said one soldier and seven militants were killed and two soldiers injured during an encounter around Kotkai while another soldier and six Uzbek militants were killed in the fighting around the Sherwangai area. Five more soldiers sustained injuries. The military statement said one Vickers machine gun, one rocket launcher, along with three rockets, two Kalashnikov rifles, along with 300 rounds, one sniper rifle, one hand-grenade, two walkie-talkie sets and books in Uzbek language were also recovered.

The Security Forces (SFs) advanced towards Janta on November 3 after securing areas around the Taliban stronghold of Sararogha in the South Waziristan Agency, where 21 militants and one soldier were reported dead by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), The News reported. Official sources said the troops had secured the areas around Sararogha while clashes had taken place near Makeen and Sam where the militants were offering resistance. The troops claimed killing 16 militants during clashes in Sararogha while a soldier was killed and another injured in a landmine explosion in the area. They said several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the militants were discovered and defused by the troops. The military is reported to have claimed considerable gains against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on all the three fronts. Officials said the troops were now advancing towards Makeen and Ladha, considered as two major strongholds of the militants. With the 21 casualties on November 3, as claimed by the Army officials, the death toll of the militants has mounted to 364 in the past 18 days. However, claims and counter-claims from the two sides could not be confirmed from independent sources mainly due to inaccessibility of the area, severance of communication lines, and displacement of people from South Waziristan and their shifting to safer places. Local sources said the SFs had captured the Janta area located between Sararogha and Ladha. However, they said the area had already been vacated by the militants. Janta is said to be a mountainous area and once a base of the Taliban because of its strategic location. They said the troops were now advancing towards Ladha, Asman Manza and Karwan Manza, the next important points after the capture of Kaniguram. The sources also said the TTP hideouts were targeted by fighter jets and with heavy artillery in Ladha, Makeen and Sam areas. Four militants’ positions were reportedly destroyed in the attack, the sources added. According to local officials, the troops are yet to reach the Ladha, Janta, Shaktoi and Barwand areas. However, they said Makeen was almost under siege by the troops, who had established strong posts on the nearby mountains to facilitate their advance on this stronghold of the militants. The ISPR statement said besides killing 16 militants and the death of an Army soldier, two suspected militants had been arrested in Sararogha. It said militants fired six rockets on security forces in Kaniguram as they were busy searching the area for IEDs, weapons and militants to secure the adjoining ridges. The military said five militants were killed during a clash in Ghanikhel near Kaniguram. On the Razmak-Makeen axis, the troops said they had secured the area from Cheena up to Mian Nurkhel. Manza Sar had also been secured and the troops were consolidating their positions, the statement added. The ISPR said the troops came under a rocket and small arms attack from the militants near Razmak, but no one was killed or injured. One soldier sustained injuries while defusing an IED at the Chashmai bridge on the same axis.

Security Forces fully secured the Shakai-Ladha road and started patrolling the Kaniguram-Ladha axis as eight militants and four soldiers died in fresh clashes in South Waziristan on the 24th day of Operation Rah-e-Nijat on November 9, The News reported. A local source said four soldiers died in a roadside bomb blast in the Makeen area. However, the Army militants fired several rockets at a security post in the Makeen area, killing four soldiers and injuring another. Eight militants were also killed in retaliatory action by the troops, said a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Local sources said ground troops were consolidating their positions in Kaniguram and Makeen as fighter jets and helicopters continued targeting the militants’ hideouts in different areas of South Waziristan. Locals said troops destroyed a stronghold of militant commander Mumtaz Burki in the Jamalki Garagah area in Kaniguram. A search operation was launched in Maidan, Kot Langarkhel, Zay Killay, Habib Kot and the surrounding areas in Ladha sub-division, said political administration officials. They also said that arms, ammunition and explosives with suicide jackets and ball-bearings were also recovered during search operations in the Shakai, Kaniguram and Bangalkhela areas. Troops have reportedly secured the Wedan, Ashkarkot and Tauda Cheena villages in Makeen as efforts were underway to secure the town, known to be the nerve centre of the militants. Most of the militants have, however, reportedly deserted their positions and fled to the nearby North Waziristan, Kurram and Orakzai tribal agencies. Officials said a security post had been established in the Makeen area. They said resistance from the militants had ended in Kaniguram, Shakai, Tiarza, Silay Rogha, Asman Manza and Karwan Manza. The sources said troops had strengthened their control over all those areas once known as the strongholds of the militants. A group of three Taliban militants launched a gun, rocket and suicide attack on the office of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), killing at least 12 people and injuring several others at Multan in Punjab on December 8, according to Daily Times. The blast in Multan destroyed the facades off several buildings in a part of the city largely reserved for Government and Security Agencies. The apparent target of the blast was a building housing an office of the ISI which was also damaged. Senior Police Officer Agha Yusuf said at least three Taliban militants in a car carried out the attack. He said one of them first fired a rocket and an automatic weapon at a police checkpoint, and then drove to the intelligence agency – where they blew it up. He said Security personnel were also among the 12 killed. “It was a suicide attack. There were two attackers who were stopped at the checkpost, but they tried to flee and Security personnel fired at them,” another Police Official, Arif Ikram told reporters. “The attackers returned fire and also launched two rockets, and later exploded their vehicle.” Multan’s top administrative official, Syed Mohammad Ali Gardezi, said that one military building was badly damaged in the blast. “They did not succeed in hitting the target,” he claimed.
