At least 42 persons are reported to have died and more than 150 sustained injuries when a procession of the Shia sect was attacked by rival Sunni extremists at Liaquat Bazaar in Quetta, capital of Baluchistan, on March 2, observed as Youm-i-Ashur, the 10th day of Muharram (Annual Shia festival commemorating martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad). The British Broadcasting Service reported that homes, businesses and a mosque used by Sunni Muslims were set ablaze by rioters following the attack. Eyewitnesses said that as the Shia procession was passing through a busy shopping area in Quetta a grenade was thrown, followed by firing from automatic guns. "I was present near the procession when we first heard an explosion and then some people fired shots," said Quetta Mayor Abdul Rahim Kakar. At least five police personnel are amongst those reported dead. While the exact number of fatalities was unclear till last reports came in, some estimates put the figures higher and doctors in Quetta were quoted as saying in the media that the death toll could increase. No group has claimed responsibility for the massacre thus far.

At least 14 Shia worshippers and a suspected suicide bomber were killed and over 200 persons sustained injuries when a powerful bomb exploded at Hyderi Mosque, situated within the premises of the seminary Sindh Madrasa-tul-Islam, in the Mithadar area of Karachi on May 7. The explosion which occurred during the Friday prayers is reported to have subsequently triggered unrest in the city, as hundreds of youths set ablaze cars, a petrol pump and a Government office. A senior police official Manzoor Mughal was quoted in The News as saying that "As no crater was found in the mosque, it means it was a suicide blast." However, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

At least 18 worshippers were killed and 40 others sustained injuries when a high-intensity bomb exploded during the evening prayers at a Shia mosque situated on the MA Jinnah Road in Karachi on May 31. The blast led to violence in several localities of Karachi and mobs set ablaze a petrol station, several vehicles, including a police mobile van, a bank and some commercial establishments. An eye-witness was quoted as saying in The News that two persons riding a motorcycle threw an explosive device inside the mosque and fled towards the Lines Area. Among those dead was Maulana Mustaque Ahmed Mazhar, the prayer leader at the mosque. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Investigation), Fayyaz Ahmed Khan Leghari, said "It could be a suicide bombing. We are investigating the blast from different angles and the facts would transpire once thorough investigation is completed."

One person was reportedly killed and several others sustained injuries when Shia protestors clashed with troops in the Gilgit city on June 3 during a curfew that was imposed in the city’s municipal limits. According to Daily Times, while the protestor was killed near Khomer Chowk, clashes and arson were reported from all over the district and a Pakistan Radio van and transmitter, Danyore Police Station, Police Training Centre, the Gilgit Deputy Commissioner’s office, a rest house and the Northern Areas Legislative Council hall were damaged by angry mobs. The army was called out in Gilgit to maintain law and order after Shia leader Agha Ziauddin Rizvi set June 3 as the deadline for the administration to resolve the issue regarding the existing school syllabi that Shia leaders had said was against their faith. Mobs are also reported to have damaged a motel in Hunza and set fire to the Hunza Assistant Commissioner’s office and Aliabad Police Station. Thousands of Shia protestors from Nomal, Danyore, Jalalabad, Matumdas, Jutal, Jaglote, Guru, Bagrote, Nagar and Hunza tried to enter Gilgit city, but troops stopped them at several entrances to the city, reported the Daily Times.

Suraiya was shot dead as she came out of an operating theatre in the Al-Zohra Hospital, said local police chief Muhammad Usman. "We have no enmity, we have friendly relations with people of all sects. I am confident that it was a sectarian killing," her brother, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, was quoted in The News. Local Shia leader Syed Nadeem Haider told reporters that "We believe it is a sectarian killing because Doctor Suraiya Nisar’s family was on the hit list of terrorists since long and they received threats in the past."

Unidentified gunmen are reported to have killed Atiqul Hasan Naqvi, a retired professor of the Balochistan University, on September 10 in Quetta, in what police said appeared to be a sectarian attack. Two assailants, riding a motorcycle, opened fire at Naqvi killing him immediately as he drove out of the Balochistan University. Naqvi, a prominent member of the Shia community, had been seriously wounded in an attack two years ago that killed his 25-year-old son, Arshad. "It appears to be sectarian as he was also targeted in the past," an unnamed police official said in Quetta.

At least 31 people were killed and 75 others sustained injuries in a suspected suicide bombing at a Shia mosque at Sialkot in the Punjab province on October 1 during the Friday prayers. More than 1,000 Shias were reportedly present at the Zainabia mosque, a kilometer away from the city police station on Raja Road, when the bomb exploded. Eyewitnesses said that a man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, entered the mosque with a briefcase while the Friday sermon was being delivered. The Sialkot Police have indicated that the man with the briefcase was the main suspect, who also died in the blast. The army was deployed later to maintain law and order after angry mobs reacted by setting ablaze a gas station and two police vehicles to protest the blast. Security forces are also reported to have neutralised another explosive weighing 6.5-kg outside the same mosque. Eight suspects had been detained after preliminary investigations. While no group has claimed responsibility for the blast thus far, officials in Islamabad said that it could be in retaliation for the last week’s operation in which Amjad Farooqi, a suspected Al Qaeda operative, was killed by security agencies. Farooqi, a key suspect in two assassination attempts on President Pervez Musharraf, was also affiliated to the outlawed Sunni outfit, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).

At least 38 people have reportedly been killed and more than 100 injured in two bomb blasts in the city of Multan on October 7, today. According to the BBC, the attack occurred at about 4.40AM (PST) when hundreds of people had gathered to mark the first anniversary of the killing of Sunni leader and Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) chief Maulana Azim Tariq outside Islamabad. "It seems to be an act of sectarian terrorism, but we are still investigating," Multan's deputy police chief Arshad Hameed told the Associated Press. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, police suspect the involvement of outlawed Shia groups. The Associated Press reported that the first blast came from a car bomb and another minutes later from a device on a motorcycle. The attack comes almost a week after a suicide attacker detonated a bomb inside a crowded Shia mosque in the eastern city of Sialkot, killing 31 people and injuring more than 50.

A suspected suicide bomber reportedly blew himself up at a Shia mosque in the Mochi Gate area of Lahore on October 10, killing at least five people, including two children, and injuring six others. According to Daily Times, the death toll could have been much higher had two security guards not stopped the bomber from entering the main hall of the mosque where up to 90 worshippers had assembled for prayers. Syed Hashim Raza, a local councilor, said, "When the attacker realised he would not be able to get into the hall, he set off the bomb." No group has claimed responsibility for the blast thus far.
