At least 13 passengers were killed and eight injured, while around 33 were abducted by suspected militants in an attack on a convoy of passenger vehicles in the Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on March 25, reports The Express Tribune. Sources said that the victims were Turi tribesmen who belonged to the Shia sect. The convoy had entered Kurram Agency after crossing the Chapari check-post via Thall tehsil (revenue unit) in Hangu District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The area where the attack took place is situated five kilometres from the Chapari check-post, inside Kurram Agency. The attack comes around a month and a half after a peace deal between warring tribes had led to the opening of the strategic Thall-Parachinar road, which had been closed for over three years due to sectarian clashes and the Taliban insurgency.

Sajid Hussain Turi, the Member of National Assembly from Kurram Agency, has said that the attack on the minibus proved that the agreement signed by the two warring tribes on February 5 is a useless document. The attack on passengers by terrorists was a failure of security agencies and a serious breach of the Amman Jirga (peace deal) that the Sunni and Shia tribes had signed, he added. “According to the agreement Sunni tribes would be held responsible for an attack on the Shia community carried out in their territory and vice versa. Since the signing of the deal, the Shia community has been attacked six times in Sunni-dominated areas. Who is responsible now? If we are not Pakistanis then we will have to decide our future course of action,” Sajid Hussain Turi said.

Police foiled a terrorist attack on Shia “Imam Bargahs” during Muharram by arresting four suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants and recovered suicide jackets, hand grenades, pistols and other weapons from their possession. The accused revealed that they were planning to sabotage the law and order situation during Muharram, added Daily Times. Police officials said these TTP operatives had affiliation with Al-Bader Group and smuggled weapons into Karachi via Chaman border of Qilla Abdullah District in Balochistan.

The spokesman of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) claimed responsibility for the suicide attack on Shia shrine in Afghanistan, India Express reported quoting reports broadcast by Radio Free Europe in Pakistan and by the BBC’s Pakistan service. LeJ is a Punjabi sectarian outfit with a long history of cooperation with Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), as well as close ties to al Qaeda and the Taliban. However, a Taliban ‘spokesman’, Zabiullah Mujahid, condemned the attacks and called the perpetrators “enemies.” Two of the attacks — in Kabul, where most of the deaths occurred, and in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, where four people were killed — were carried out by suicide bombers on foot. A third attack, in the southern city of Kandahar, used a bomb hidden on a parked motorcycle, but no one was killed.

The United States on December 7 urged for greater action by Pakistan against a militant group that Afghanistan blamed for the December 6 suicide attack against its Shia minority in Afghanistan, reports Dawn. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) in mind when she urged Pakistan to act against extremists during an October visit to Islamabad. “It’s precisely the kind of organisation that the Secretary was trying to address when she went to Pakistan in calling for Pakistan to do more to combat this kind of extremist terrorist activity within its own borders,” Toner told reporters. Pointing out that LeJ has been blamed for attacks in Pakistan as well, Toner said: “It’s clearly a threat to both countries. It’s just too important, the threat we face. There needs to be ongoing, sustained and even increased cooperation and coordination between Afghanistan (and) Pakistan and certainly with the international community.” Afghan President Hamid Karzai on December 6 had said that the LeJ orchestrated the attack.
