Nine members of a Bara-based militant group were killed in an encounter with the Police and the Qaumi Lashkar (militia) comprising armed villagers when they allegedly attempted to kidnap the chief official of Bazidkhel union council near Peshawar, the NWFP capital, on February 4, The News reported. Three Policemen sustained injuries in the first incident of its kind in which the Police and villagers jointly countered the militants operating in Peshawar. Police and villagers said that members of the Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam entered the Bazidkhel village in two cars and a motorbike in a bid to kidnap Faheem, the local union council chief. In the ensuing encounter, seven attackers were killed. A source said two more militants were killed near Badaber when they were escaping on a motorcycle. Meanwhile, Lashkar-e-Islam chief Mangal Bagh threatened the Bazidkhel villagers with reprisal if found to be involved in killing nine of his men. Earlier, a spokesman for the Lashkar-e-Islam denied that the slain men wanted to attack the Badaber Police station. However, spokesman Misri Khan conceded that their men were on their way to Bazidkhel to take action against some criminals and elements opposed to their organisation. “Ours is a peaceful organisation that never attacked the security forces and the police. Had they gone there to attack the Badaber police, they would have first attacked Hayatabad and Sarband police stations,” he claimed. The spokesman alleged that their men were stopped at the Frontier Corps check-post, arrested and later killed by the Police and criminals from Bazidkhel.

Five people were killed and 17 injured in a car bomb blast outside the Hujra (male guest house) of the union council chief in Bazidkhel village of Peshawar in the afternoon of February 17, The News reported. Faheemur Rahman, the union council chief of Bazidkhel, eight kilometres south of Peshawar on Kohat Road, alleged that the Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) was involved in this “cheap act” of terrorism. Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred in a car parked on a street near the Hujra of Rahman. The blast also destroyed two cars and damaged six buildings. “It could be linked to the killing of nine tribesmen in Bazidkhel. Nine members of the LI were killed by a Qaumi Lashkar (militia), comprising residents of Bazidkhel and the nearby villages, when they reportedly made a failed attempt to kidnap Rahman on February 4. Mangal Bagh had warned through his FM radio of revenge, directing the villagers to hoist black flags atop their houses or every villager would be considered equally involved in the murder of his men. The villagers of the nearby towns had constituted a Qaumi Lashkar after threats from the Bara-based militant group and other militant organisations.

A tribal Lashkar (militia) attacked Taliban hideouts in the Kurram Agency on July 2, killing 28 militants and suffering seven fatalities themselves, and the intensifying battles prompted them to ask for Army troops to help, a local lawmaker said, The News reported. The fighting in the remote Kurram region was the latest in two weeks of battles between militants and tribesmen there that have killed 141 people, including more than 100 militants, two Government officials said. Their information could not, however, be independently verified. Sajid Hussain Turi, a lawmaker from Kurram, said the militants were moving into Kurram from the Swat Valley, where the military is undertaking an offensive to neutralize them. He said hundreds of tribesmen took part in the attack early on July 1, triggering a gun battle that killed 28 militants and seven tribal fighters. “Kurram is an important place because the Taliban can cross the Afghan border from here easily,” Turi said, adding that “The Lashkar is facing these armed Taliban, but we request that the government send troops to Kurram to fight the Taliban as quickly as possible.”

The tribal Lashkar (militia) in Doog Darra area of Dir Upper District on July 2 killed two militants, including a key Taliban commander Maulana Naeemullah, in fierce fighting, The News reported. Naeemullah was one of the top three local commanders, who facilitated the foreign militants to entrench in the area. There were also reports that several militants suffered injuries in the fierce clashes, triggered by the armed villagers’ attempt to torch the house of an important Taliban commander Maulana Zakirullah at Chinar area. Thousands of armed villagers have been trying to drive the Taliban militants out of the area for the last 25 days but the fighting is reported to have escalated during the last five days in which 13 persons, including 10 militants and three militia men, were killed and several others sustained injuries. The villagers claim to have killed 45 militants in the conflict so far. Local and Lashkar sources told The News that the fierce fighting started in the evening of July 1 when the militia attempted to torch the house of Maulana Zakirullah. The militia has torched or destroyed around 60 houses of the alleged Taliban members and their supporters in the area. "Some 16 fighters of the Lashkar were trying to set on fire the house when around 12 militants attacked them," a resident of Miana said. The clash resulted in the killing of three members of the Lashkar while two others were wounded.

Volunteers of the Lashkar (militia) shot dead three veil-clad men near the residence of an anti-Taliban Nazim in Bazidkhel village of Peshawar District in the NWFP on November 15. Nazim of the Bazidkhel Union Council, Faheemur Rahman had raised a voluntary Lashkar comprising several hundred villagers to protect his area from the militants. He has survived a number of bombings and attacks on his life after a feud with Mangal Bagh, the chief of the Khyber Agency-based militant outfit, Lashkar-e-Islam. “The three Burqa-clad terrorists were on their way to my village Hujra, five kilometres south of Peshawar on the Kohat Road, when someone informed the Qaumi Lashkar volunteers and the villagers managed to kill them,” Faheemur Rahman told The News. He said apparently he was the target as several attempts had been made in the past to kill him. Rehman claimed that the attackers were from the Bara subdivision of Khyber Agency and were associated with the Lashkar-e-Islam, which had attacked his house and Hujra (guesthouse) thrice in recent months. No group has claimed responsibility for the failed attack on the Nazim nor has anyone owned the three men so far.
