Over a dozen people, including two Policemen, were injured in internecine clashes between cadres of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (Unified CPN Maoist) and CPN-Maoist led by Matrika Yadav in Biratnagar in the night of April 8. The local administration has imposed prohibitory orders in areas surrounding Sirauchiya of Biratnagar to control the situation. According to media reports, cadres of the Matrika Yadav led Maoists attacked cadres of the other group alleging them of violating the code of conduct of the by-elections. Maharajgunj and Balaju remained tense after YCL cadres started hurling stones at the Police and blocked the traffic. Police had to fire tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. According to Nepal News, the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) cadres on June 21 clashed with Police and vandalised Government offices in various Districts, including capital Kathmandu, in the course of sit-in demonstrations they staged in front of the offices across the country to prevent civil servants and service seekers from entering, as part of their protest against the President’s decision on the COAS and the recent Government decision to overturn the Maoist-led Government’s decision to dismiss the COAS. Clashes occurred in front of the Singha Durbar (Prime Minister’s office) after demonstrators defied propitiatory orders and tried to breach the Police cordon. Some demonstrators, including a Maoist Constituent Assembly member, were injured in the incident. Some journalists were also injured and the cameras of some photojournalists were damaged. Violence also erupted in Kavre as demonstrators attempted to forcefully enter the District Development office. At least four persons were injured. Maoists and Police clashed in many other Districts, including Bardiya, Darchula, Mahottari, Ramechhap, Ilaam, Morang, Darchula and Baitadi, among others. At least 50 people were injured in these clashes. Police fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators in Baitadi and Baridya Districts. The situation in Dhading became tense after the Maoists assaulted the Local Development Officer. The local administration, consequently, imposed a curfew in the District headquarter and surrounding areas.

Protests in Kathmandu and some Districts were marked with sporadic violent clashes between security personnel and protesters. The situation in Kathmandu, which was relatively calm until one in the afternoon, suddenly became tense after the police fired water cannons at protesters in Naya Baneshwor square to clear the road for Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s motorcade from the airport.

The general strike in the Capital remained relatively peaceful compared to December 20, while clashes took place in some parts of the country with over a dozen incidents of vandalism, arson and attack on Government employees. The Capital, which witnessed violent clashes on December 20, remained largely peaceful with Maoist demonstrators burning tyres, singing songs and chanting slogans against the government. However, protesters in Bhaktapur manhandled Haribol Khanal, Director of the Curriculum Development Centre. They had vandalised three vehicles near the centre before entering the office. The Home Ministry had beefed up security in the Capital to prevent untoward incidents. Over 5000 security personnel, including senior police officers were deployed.
