Rastriya Jana Morcha (RJM) has given a call for bandh in Seti and Mahakali zones on January 5 as part of its agitation against federalism. RJM cadres are staging demonstrations, organising rallies and chanting slogans for annulment of federalism and protection of nationalism in various places including Dipayal, Mahendranagar and Dhangadi. RJM, the only party against federalism in the Constituent Assembly, started shutting various zones and organising marches and rallies from December 27, 2009 calling for the annulment of federalism and protection of national interest. Earlier, it had called bandhs in Gandaki, Dhaulagiri, Bheri and Karnali zones.

Unidentified assailants shot dead two cadres of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (Unified CPN-Maoist) and a local resident at Ganjabhawanipur in the Bara District in the night of January 6, reports Kantipuronline. The victims, along with some others, were returning from a dinner party when the group resorted to fire at them. The deceased Maoist cadres were identified as Dara Yadav and Ramprakash Yadav while the other deceased person has been identified as Ambika Mahato. The Maoist regional secretary Kanhaiya Lal Yadav and Siyaram Kushwaha sustained critical injuries in the incident. Nepal News adds that the attackers were cadres of the Terai Mukti Morcha (TMM). Meanwhile, Bhojpura State Committee of the Unified CPN-Maoist has called for Bara, Parsa and Rautahat shut down on January 7 (today) protesting against the incident.

Clashes among the Maoists and those opposing the strike were reported from different parts of the country. In one such incident, at least half a dozen persons were injured when clashes between the Maoist cadres and youths affiliated to Hindu Yuva Sangh (Hindu Youth Association) took place in the Birgunj area of Parsa District. The clashes had started after Hindu youths backed by local residents set ablaze the tent in City Hall being used by Maoists. Those opposing the strike also set ablaze a van being used by the Maoists to transport ration.
