Separately, a delayed report said that Maoists have abducted 18 persons, including five students, from a village in Sankhuwasabha district on January 20. Owing to Maoist threats, 36 VDC secretaries of the Ramechhap district have collectively resigned from their posts on January 23. Reports added that the insurgents have freed the teachers and students who had earlier been abducted from Raigaon in the Dhading district. Meanwhile, normal life in various parts of the country, including the Chitwan, Kaski, Parbat, Saptari, Siraha, Tanahun, Parbat and Udaypur districts, have been affected due to the Maoist general strike.

A report from Nepalgunj said hill districts of far and mid-western regions have been hit by an acute shortage of medicines as. A report from the Tanahun district said Maoists bombed the bridge over the Marshyangdi River near Aabu Khaireni on February 22, disrupting all vehicular movement to and from the district headquarters, Gorkha. In Nuwakot district, hundreds of motels along the Pasang Lhamu Highway have been forced to shut down, as vehicles have stopped plying since the last two weeks. Likewise, a report from Dang said locals are using firewood as alternative to LPG and kerosene after supplies ran out in the local market. Further, people of the Jumla, Humla, Kalikot, Dolpa and Mugu districts are facing food shortage as the authorities have failed to supply the required quota of food grains to these districts.

Security sources said about 700 buses left Kathmandu escorted by the RNA. Major marketplaces remained closed in Biratnagar and no vehicles plied on the Mahendra Highway.
