A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist was shot dead by suspected Maoists (CPI-Maoist) in the Belpahari area of West Midnapur district on January 9, according to Times of India. Birpur zonal committee member Palaram Tudu was killed when the attackers opened fire at him on a paddy field in the Jamjhulka village under Belpahari police station, Inspector General of Police (Law and order), Raj Kanojia, said. "We are not ruling out the involvement of the Maoists," he stated. The Belpahiri region, which has reportedly witnessed landmine blasts in recent months, has been identified by the State administration as Maoist-infested.

Naxalites (left-wing extremists) on March 4 shot dead Sunil Kumar Mahato, a member of parliament (MP) belonging to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), who was witnessing a football match organised to mark Holi festivals at Bakuria village in the East Singhbhum district, reports The Hindu. Four of his bodyguards and a party colleague were killed in the attack. Jharkhand Home Secretary Sudhir Tripathi said naxalites opened gunfire from close range at Mahato, who represented Jamshedpur constituency. Ghatsila Sub Divisional Officer Ramesh Dubey said that about 15 naxalites came to the venue of the match 10 minutes before its end and moved near the MP under the pretext of garlanding him before opening fire on him and his guards from point blank range.

A group of Maoists shot dead a forest official, identified as Rabindranath Patra, and set ablaze his beat-house and motorcycle at Sarguda village in the Mayurbhanj district on May 8, according to Press Trust of India. Mayurbhanj District Collector, Suresh Vashisth, told The Telegraph that around 10 armed Maoists stormed into the Sarguda forest beat-house in Rairangpur forest division and dragged Rabindranath Patra, out of his house. "Then they set the beat-house on fire and took Patra around half-a-km away before putting a bullet through his head," said Vashisth. Before leaving, the Maoists also put up posters on the trees demanding the "end of oppression" by forest officials, he added. The Maoists, three of whom were women, were suspected to have crossed over from the neighbouring Jharkhand and went back to the neighbouring State after the incident, police said. Forest officials said Patra reached the area on May 7 in connection with the elephant census being undertaken and had attended a wedding feast at a nearby area on May 8-night.

Cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a 45-year-old shopkeeper at Sringeri in the Chikmagalur district on June 3-night, suspecting him to be a police informer. Eight Maoists descended on the shop of Venkatesh in Gandaghatti village after warning his wife and son, residing in the adjacent house, not to venture out. They assaulted the shopkeeper before firing at him from point blank range. The Maoists also set ablaze Venkatesh’s motorcycle. Before fleeing, they left behind pamphlets with a message that read: "Let us expose informers and teach them a befitting lesson". Police sources said that the attack could be in reaction to the killing of a Maoist, identified as Dinakar, by the police at Kigga in Sringeri in December 2006.
