Police sources said approximately two dozen MCC Naxalites raided the village and took three persons hostage. They later tied them together and shot them dead. Police suspect that the three were killed in retaliation for the killing of a hardcore Naxalite of the MCC in the same village in an encounter in October 2002.

Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) killed a sarpanch (village headman), belonging to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and a relative of Union Minister of State for Home Ch Vidyasagar Rao, in Madimalla village, Karimnagar district, on January 10. Police sources said approximately 10 Naxalites of the Maddimmalla and Bheemgal Local Guerrilla Squads of the PWG went to the house of Potlapally Radhakishan Rao and shot him dead. Separately, approximately 30-armed Naxalites of the PWG severely thrashed a Congress worker in Yenkapally village, Mahadevpur mandal, in the same district. The victim, M Srinivas Goud, has been shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. In Meenajipet Manthani Muttaram mandal, PWG Naxalites reportedly hanged the effigy of the Chief Minister to a tree, protesting the Janmabhoomi (community development) programme.

Police sources said an armed group of CPI-ML activists shot dead a businessman and were fleeing when the villagers caught three of them and beat them to death. Other assailants managed to escape.
