Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Gurusaran Nayak escaped a bid on his life when Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres fired indiscriminately a few metres away from his car near Harta village in West Singhbhum District on January 9, reports DNA. The legislator was returning after inaugurating the chief minister's Kanyadan Yojana at Harta Middle School in the District when the incident took place. Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) struck a blow to the Zilla Parishad polls in Gadchiroli by killing the Bhamragarh Panchayat Samiti Chairman and Bhamragarh tehsil (revenue unit) Congress Unit Chief Bahadurshah Alam on January 28, reported Indian Express. Three members of Maoists’ Quick Action Team came to a tea stall in the town square where Alam was having his morning tea and shot him dead from close range, said the Police. They ran away shouting, “Alam Murdabad, Lal Salaam Zindabad”. “He was reportedly warned by the Naxals not to contest. We had also recovered pamphlets that called him as a traitor,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Veeresh Prabhu.

Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed two persons in Joganguda village under Aheri tehsil (revenue unit) in Gadchiroli District on April 2, on suspicion of being Police informers, reported The Times of India. The victims were identified as deputy sarpanch (head of village level local self-Government institution) Bapu Yenka (60) and Arjana Talandi (55). According to reports, the duo Yenka and Talandi were member of Mahatma Gandhi Tanta Mukti Mohim (dispute-free village scheme) of the village and worked in coordination with the Police to settle the disputes of villagers. Maoists had reportedly warned them to refrain being close to the Police.

Three persons, including two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) local leaders, were killed when Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres triggered a powerful landmine blast on the convoy of BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mahesh Gagda in Bijapur District on April 20, reports The Times of India. The Maoists blew up one of the eight vehicles of the convoy in a forested area in Pegrapalli in the District resulting in the killing of Purshottam Thakur, the BJP District unit vice president, Mahesh Pujari, another key local BJP leader and Ashwani Sharma, the vehicle driver. One person is also reported to be seriously injured in the attack. "Bijapur legislator Mahesh Gagda and Bijapur District collector Rajat Kumar who were travelling in the convoy are safe though the Maoists seem to have triggered the blast to target them," Ramniwas, Additional Director General of Police (Maoist operation), said.

Around 8 pm, two men came on a motorcycle and fired at Ratanlal Netam (25) of the District Police standing guard in front of Usendi's house. They shot the solitary guard from close range, snatched his INSAS rifle and rode away without resistance. Police suspect it is the handiwork of the Maoists' East Bastar Divisional Committee.

Cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed two persons at Kuitopa village under the Keraikela Police Station area in the West Singhbhum District on June 6, reports The Times of India. Sources said a group of about 15 armed Maoists raided the house of village head Yugal Kishore Tanti and Jeevlal Swansi, dragged out of their houses and took them to the Kuitopa culvert before they were shot dead. While Tanti was the traditional village head of Kuitopa, Swansi was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha president of Bandgaon block (administrative division). West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh said the Maoists killed the two men on the charge of being police informers.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres abducted Raveena Gavde, panchayat samiti (block level local self-Government institution) member on June 9, from remote Rajaram Khandla village in Aheri taluka (administrative unit) in Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra. It is reportedly said the abduction was facilitated by Maoists to create panic among the elected representatives and the office-bearers of local civic body. Gavde was elected to the local civic body in the zilla parishad (district level local self-Government institution) and panchayat samiti election held in February, 2012. Police, however, have categorically denied her abduction.

Kalawati Devi (39), zilla parishad (district level local self-Government institution) member and vice-president of the District Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s women’s wing was abducted from her home apparently for refusing to pay levy, and was subsequently killed by the cadres of the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a break away faction of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Gumla District on September 29, reported The Telegraph. The dead body of Kalawati was recovered from the roadside linking Naspura village with Palkot Police Station in the District. Sources in the Police said that a few weeks ago, the family refused to pay levy to the tune of INR 30,000 demanded by one Parmeshwar Gope, who had been sent to jail two years ago for alleged links with the PLFI.

Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a Congress leader at Reddygudem in Palvancha mandal (administrative unit) in Khammam District on October 16, reports The Hindu. Four Maoists went to the house of K. Venkat Reddy (45), also a former vice-sarpanch (deputy head of Panchayat, a village level local self-Government institution), and called him out. After holding a brief conversation over a land dispute Venkat Reddy had with a villager, the Maoists shot him dead. They left behind a letter at the incidents site in the name of the Badru dalam (armed squad) of the Kothaguda-Narsampet area.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Lingama Habika (35), a top leader, and Kameya Habika (30), allegedly involved in the abduction of Laxmipur Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Jhina Hikaka, were arrested in Narayanpatna Block of Koraput District on November 25, reports The Hindu. According to Devadutta Singh, Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police, South-West R ange, and Avinash Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP), Koraput, the two Maoists were arrested at Dumbaguda village. Both of them were part of the hardcore militia group of Srikakulam-Koraput Joint Divisional Committee of the Maoists. Apart from it, they were also prominent members of the Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) of Narayanpatna area. Both were close to CMAS leader Nachika Linga, who is in the most wanted list of both Odisha and Andhra Police. Commenting on the arrest, Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar said "They were arrested from their homes. They have confessed to their involvement in the MLA's abduction and over two dozen Maoist attacks. Interrogation is on," reports The Times of India.

Suspected cadres of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a break-away faction of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed Sambal Pradhan (52), the secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Khunti District committee on December 5, near a weekly market in Sondari village under Torpa police station, reports DNA. The PLFI cadres also set ablaze two vehicles parked in the vicinity, the sources said. Ranchi Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Sheetal Oraon said according to prima facie evidence, the incident seemed to be a handiwork of PLFI, a splinter group of the Maoists.
