Left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) killed a leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and vice-president of the Karimnagar district Kisan Morcha, R Balreddy at Sircilla town Karimnagar district on April 18 night. Balreddy was said to be a close associate of the Union Minister of State for Home Vidyasagar Rao. The Naxalites also reportedly left a note at the site saying their action was meant to register a protest against "anti-people police of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’ and the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). Official sources said that the PWG has resorted to the violence in the division after almost a lull of six months. Refuting the claim of the PWG that it resorted to the killings in protest against the policies of the Union government and the POTA, police sources said the killings were in retaliation to the moves initiated by security forces to wean away the cadre from the outfit.

Speaking to media persons in Kolkata, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said two persons on a motorbike shot dead CPI(M) leader Ajit Ghosh, a teacher, and his bodyguard Rajkumar Sarkar when they were returning from school on a motorcycle. "We think the People's War Group has done the killing," Bhattacharjee said and added that he would talk to the government of a neighbouring State where the PWG was more active and ask for action against the outfit. "Unless the neighbouring State government takes action against PWG (cadres) in their area, we cannot make much headway in beating the outfit in this State", he said. Stating that West Bengal is a member of a committee of six States set up by the Union government to curb the PWG menace, Bhattacharjee said his government was in regular touch with the Union government to keep it informed about the crackdown on the PWG in West Bengal.
