A Deputy Superintendent of Police, two other police personnel and the driver of the vehicle in which they were travelling, were seriously injured in a landmine blast triggered by left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG), in Ghanasar village, Bhamini mandal (administrative unit), Srikakulam district, on March 15. Earlier, on March 13 night the PWG Naxalites had blasted the Bhamini Mandal Revenue Office. They planted landmines at a culvert on the road leading to the office, anticipating the visit of police officers the next morning. According to official sources, the incident took place when the police team was going to inspect the damaged building. As the vehicle reached Ghanasar village, the Naxalites set off the landmine with the help of a battery-operated remote control device. After the blast, two police parties conducting combing operations in the nearby areas rushed to the spot and an encounter ensued which lasted for several hours. The Naxalites managed to escape.

College building under the Korutla police station limits, Karimnagar district, on March 18 night. Local reports said the incident took place when five Naxalites under the leadership of Metapalli area’s Godavari Local Guerrilla Squad (LGS) secretary Mekala went to the engineering college and took away the attendant and four others who were sleeping in the building to some distance. Four Naxalites went inside the building, set up detonators in four rooms and the verandah and blasted them. Furniture, 80 computers and an AC room were completely damaged. Cracks were found throughout the building. Later, the Naxalites tried to blast a culvert on the highway near the college but escaped when they spotted vehicular traffic. The police unearthed detonators under the culvert. The Naxalites also reportedly left a letter at the place which said they resorted to the blast to protest the March 11-Eturunagaram encounter in Warangal district and against the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO).

Reports said more than 30 naxalites, including 15 carrying firearms and others crowbars, and axes, were involved in the attack. The Naxalites belonged to the Krishnapatti southern squad area committee (SAC), comprising the local guerrilla squads of Naguleti dalam (squad) and Bellamkonda dalam. SAC 'secretary' Sagar reportedly led the attackers'. According to the reports, the Naxalites barged into the MLA's hose and captured him first and subsequently his guards were also asked to surrender. However, no injuries were reported in the attack. Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) blew-up a telephone exchange in Guntur district and a railway engine in Nizamabad district, on December 15. In the first incident, the Naxalites blasted a 200-line telephone exchange building in Guntur district. In Nizamabad district, they boarded a slow moving diesel engine in Sadashivnagar mandal (administrative unit) on the Nizamabad-Secunderabad line and asked the driver and helper to alight before blowing it up. Media reports said both the incidents were against arrests and encounter deaths of the PWG Naxalites in Guntur district in November 2001.

The Naxalites alo reportedly left pamphlets at the site which called upon people to resist construction of the balancing reservoir designed to provide water to the third crop under the Krishna delta, as it would submerge 35 villages on either side of the Krishna.
