Police on January 9 arrested Nanu Ram alias Prabhatji, ‘secretary’ of Koyal Sankh zone of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), along with a pistol and five rounds of ammunition, from Kanke Police Station area in Ranchi District, reports Telegraph India. Active for the last 21 years, he is believed to have played a role during the encounter in Latehar District on January 7, 2013, that left 11 Security Force and two civilians dead. He carried head money of INR 700,000 and is accused of killing several Policemen and setting Government vehicles on fire earlier. Senior Superintendent of Police, Saket Kumar Singh, said Ram was also a member of the outfit’s Bihar Regional Committee. He is believed to be the one who works out strategies to attack the Police. So far Ram has admitted his involvement in as many as 12 cases. He had been arrested twice before, in 1992 and 2000.

Doctors conducting the autopsy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers killed in the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ambush in Latehar District on January 7, found a 2.75 kg unexploded improvised explosive device (IED) stitched inside the abdomen of a trooper, reports The Times of India. Dr Binay Kumar of Ranchi Institute of Medical Sciences' said, "Apart from the IED, detonator batteries and a small solar panel were fished out from the abdomen."

Grenades and ammunition made in Pakistan were among the items recovered from the site of the Maoist attack in Jharkhand, sources said. Sources said a couple of grenades, pieces of blasted grenades and fired cases of bullets recovered from Latehar in Jharkhand have clear markings to show that they were manufactured in Pakistan. It is for the first time that ammunition with Pakistani markings have been recovered from Maoists. In the past, some Chinese ammunition have been recovered.

A team from Padma police station in Hazaribag District seized more than 2,000 detonators hidden in a two-wheeler near Alinagar College late on January 18, reports The Times of India. Police had got a tip-off that a youth, named Pintu Kumar Mehta, left Domchanch in Koderma for Padma to supply the explosive materials to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Chatra and was to pass through Padma to Itkhori in Chatra. Though Police could seize the explosives and arrest one Manish Kumar Mehta, who was waiting there to take the delivery, Pintu could not be arrested. Further, on the basis of information provided by Manish, a fresh raid was conducted and police seized five-and-a-half quintals of ammonium nitrate kept in 11 bags from the house of one Neman Bhuiyan in Suji village close to Padma Police Station.

Palamu Police on January 28 forced five Peoples' Liberation Front of India (PLFI) cadres to surrender at Guriyadamar village in Lesliganj Block of the District and recovered 10 country-made weapons from them, reports The Times of India. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Apoorva said, "The surrender of the five rebels is the biggest one in the past five years. They were in civil uniform and had kept their dresses in their backpack." The five cadres were identified as Ishwari Oraon, Binod Oraon, Vikas Yadav, Chhattu Bhuiyan and Chandan Paswan. The recovered weapons included a country made carbine, one 9mm katta, five 315 bore rifles, two 12 bore guns and one revolver along with 38 cartridges. About half a dozen ammunition pouches with uniforms were also recovered.

An aide of Kundan Pahan, the South Chotanagpur ‘zonal commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested by from Silli-Rahe locality in Ranchi District, reports The Times of India. The aide, identified as Pitambar Mahto alias Pritam alias Lambu, was helping him gain his ground by distributing posters and brainwashing villagers to join their ranks in Silli, Tamar, Bundu, Sonahatu and adjoining areas of rural Ranchi. A Made-in-Italy (though looking like a country made) pistol, some ammunition and 40kg can bomb were recovered by the Police. Earlier active in rural Ranchi, Pahan has now shifted his activities to Saraikela, Chaibasa, Simdega, Gumla, East Singhbhum and Khunti and hails from Badigarha village of Tamar.

Around 2.30 pm, District Armed Police and the 94th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) raided Hurwa forest in Arki Police Station area, based on a tip-off about the presence of around 12 Maoist cadres. Commenting on the incident, Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Tamilvanan said, “The rebel has been identified as 24-year-old Binda Pahan, who was wanted in two cases. As many as 15 rounds of ammunition have also been recovered.” The Maoist was a close aide of notorious ‘zonal commander’ Kundan Pahan, adds The Times of India.

Police on February 2 recovered four can bombs containing about 15 kilograms of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from a farm house of a local farmer in West Bokaro Police Station of Ramgarh District in Jharkhand, reports The Times of India. West Bokaro Officer-in-Charge (OC) Balmeeki Singh said that following a tip-off about movement of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and storage of huge cache of explosives for triggering landmines, Police conducted raids in the farmhouse in the dense forest and recovered the explosives. "The explosives are believed to be stored by the Maoists. A bomb disposal squad had to be called in to defuse the explosive," Singh said, adding that Police also recovered 14 detonators, 11 gelatin sticks, 100 metres of wire, which would have been used to connect the explosives for a high intensity explosion. Police also recovered iron tools that would be used in digging out the land for planting landmines.

Three People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed by a mob of 100 villagers near Darntoli-Sanwariya villages in Gumla District of Jharkhand, on February 15, reports The Times of India. Two country-made pistols, six bullets and three mobile handsets were recovered from them. Two of the deceased have been identified as Parmeshwar Oraon of Dohri village and Prakash Oraon of Dahu-Navatoli village under Sisai Police Station of the same District. Police Inspector Amish Hussein said, "On Thursday [February 14] they reached the village looking for Mana Baraik's daughter who had gone to work in a brick kiln. They threatened Baraik's daughter in-law and also abducted two school going boys of the village including Champa Oraon at gun point." The activities of PLFI men angered the villagers of Sanwariya who held a meeting on February 14 night and in the early morning on February 15 to discuss what to do with them. When the trio was attacked they even talked over the phone with Sukra Oraon, ‘sub-zonal’ commander of PLFI requesting him to rescue them. The Police along with Jharkhand Jaguar, CoBRA, CRPF and Jharkhand Armed Police had launched an operation against the Maoists in Sivil-Roret and Luru regions in Chainpur police station of Gumla District on March 13 and 14 and fighting continued intermittently for 24 hours. Police had intelligence input about the presence of over 250-300 Maoists who included top leaders like central committee member Arvindji, politburo member Kishan Da, Inderjeet and regional commander Sylvester. According to Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP), Narendra Singh, Umesh is a ‘self-styled zonal committee member’ of the Koyal Sankh zone and ‘secretary’ of North Koyal sub-zone of the Maoists. "He is the third big Maoist leader to have been arrested in the recent past. He had INR 7 lakh [700,000] reward on his head", the SP added. He is a matriculate and a married man but his affair with a mother of two children finally led to his arrest. One country-made stengun, seven cartridges and one cellphone was recovered from Umesh. Those engaged in assembling the guns fled on seeing the Police. No arrests have been made thus far. Though Deoghar is not a Maoist stronghold, it is suspected that the guns were meant to be supplied to the Maoists. Each bomb contained explosives weighing five kilograms and was packed in tins. The total weight of the explosives was over 100 kilograms. Referring to the landmines, an unnamed Policeman said, "It was enough to blow up an entire company of forces."
