Seven cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested in separate incidents in Latehar District of Jharkhand on January 5, reports The Telegraph. The arrested cadres were allegedly part of the team that ambushed and killed three home guards and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) ranked Official of Latehar Police at Lukaiya More on NH 39 under Chandwa Police Station limits in the said District on November 22, 2019. The cadres are said to be associated with dreaded Maoist – Ravindra Ganjhu and have been identified as Baijnath Ganjhu, Kunwar Ganjhu, Rajesh Ganjhu, Sunil Ganjhu, Faguna Ganjhu, Sanjay Ganjhu and Naresh Ganjhu. They were arrested following an intelligence input that the rebels had come to collect levy from a contractor on behalf of Ravindra. First, the Police tracked down three rebels at Saroj Nagar in Chandwa block of the District. The arrested trio spilled the whereabouts of four more who were arrested later on from an unspecified location the District. The Police recovered forty live bullets that the rebels had looted from the Police, blood-stained pouches and clothes of the Police including three Aadhaar cards, three bikes, INR 500,000 which the rebels had collected as levy from a contractor named Sonu Singh in the said block.

Security Force (SF) personnel engaged in anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation recovered two bombs suspected to have planted by cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from Leteburu forests under Badinijkel Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) in Khunti District of Jharkhand on January 9, reports The Telegraph. Of the two bombs recovered, one was a three-foot-long pipe bomb of 10 kilograms weight and another was a Can-bomb weighing a kilogram. A joint team of District Police and Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF’s) 60 battalion destroyed a camp of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and arrested a cadre in Sinko forests under Bandhgaon Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on January 18, reports The Times of India. As per the report, on receiving a tip off about the presence of the PLFI cadres in the said forest, the Security Forces (SFs) had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. As soon as the SFs reached the forest, cadres of PLFI fired shots at them leading to an exchange of fire. "The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 minutes, resulting in the extremists fleeing from their camp. We have arrested a rebel and our interrogation is on to ascertain his identity and his involvement in extremist activities," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pranav Anand adding that SFs recovered a 9mm pistol, a single barrel gun and a few cartridges, besides items of daily use from the PLFI camp.

Palamu, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ajay Linda, said acting on a tip-off regarding the movement of the ‘sub-zonal commander’ of TSPC Nishan alias Nishant Ji, a team of the local Police and Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) arrested the Nishan, who hails from Gaya District of Bihar. Following the information provided by him, Police conducted a raid in Khumbikhurd village under Nawabazar Police Station area and arrested another ‘sub-zonal commander’ of the outfit identified as Gulab Ganjhu alias Pankaj Ji. From him, a loaded country-made rifle and 4 cartridges were recovered. TSPC is a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist).

Four cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested along with 100 rounds of 7.65 mm and 100 rounds of 0.315 mm ammunition and some Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] literature from Sarmali village in Seraikela Block (administrative unit) in Seraikela Kharsawan District of Jharkhand on February 12, reports The Pioneer. The arrested cadres belonged to ‘Maharaj Pramanik squad’ of CPI-Maoist, and were identified as Sagar Mahto, Jagdish Mahato, Abhishek Kumar Sinha and Gunlal Mahato. As per the report, Sagar Mahto is a resident of Bandhgaon under Kharsawan Police Station limits in the District and a special associate of Maharaj Pramanik. Jagdish Mahto is a resident of Sini Tola Palasdih in Sini area in the District. Abhishek Kumar Sinha hails from Harharguttu, Jamshedpur in East Singhbhum District and is an illegal supplier of ammunition. He is originally a resident of Bariarpur in Munger District of Bihar. Gunlal Mahato is a resident of Serengada in Kuchai Police Station limits in the District. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Karthik S., said: “We received information that Maharaj Pramanik is trying to get ammunitions and weapons apart from explosives and cylinders to inflict damage on Security Forces (SFs). Once specific input was received, a special team was constituted which arrested the cadres red-handed while exchanging ammunitions. The arrested people include one arms supplier, one middleman and two over ground workers (OGW).”

The Police in a joint operation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recovered landmines and weapons from a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideout at Sirinia village under Pipra Block (administrative unit) in Palamu District of Jharkhand on February 13, reports Outlook India. According to the Police, the joint operation was launched on the basis of intelligence input about the presence of Maoists in the said village. During the search operation, five landmines, four rifles, 40 AK-47s live cartridges, 20 metre wire and other things were seized. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) personnel later defused the landmines.

An alleged Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, who was arrested from neighboring State Jharkhand, has died in Jamui District of Bihar on February 23, reports ANI. The Maoist cadre, identified as Siddhu Koda was arrested by the Police, along with an accomplice, Md Illiyas Hembram, from Dumka District of Jharkhand on February 22. Koda, who carries a reward of INR 100,000 on his head, is said to be a “lieutenant general” of an armed squad of the outfit, was admitted in Sadar hospital after he complained of chest pain and died during treatment. Hembram, was wanted in over a dozen Naxal-related incidents in Jamui district on the Jharkhand border. An AK-47 assault rifle, an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle and live cartridges were seized from their possession.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) at Kaththokwa forest under Bishunpur Police Station limits in Gumla District of Jharkhand on March 31, reports United News of India. As per the report, on receiving input about the presence of some members of Rabindra Ganjhu Squad of CPI-Maoist in the said forest, the Police initiated a patrolling. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Kumar Jha, the Maoists opened fire at the Police team leading to a gun-battle in which a Maoist was killed whose identity is yet to be ascertained. Three women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)cadres were killed in an encounter between Maoists and Security Forces (SFs) at Chirung village under Gudri Police Station area in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 4, reports The Pioneer.West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, "During the operation there were jawans (troopers) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s 170 and 60 battalions posted in West Singhbhum and 94 battalion from the adjoining Khunti district beside the district police jawans.The personnel rushed to the Chirung village by maintaining social distancing and encircled the village where about 25 rebels were holding meeting with the villagers. But as the police and para-military forces reached, the rebels started firing at the troops. After an initial exchange of fire from both the sides for about an hour, the naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] started backtracking and finally fled the scene." After the rebels fled the scene, the SFs carried out a search operation and found the bullet-ridden bodies of three women Maoists,beside those bodies were lying three rifles."During the search, we found over 500 rounds of bullets, arrow bombs, two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), medicines, naxal literature from the scene, suggesting that the rebels belonging to Suresh Munda squad of the CPI-Maoist were at the Chirung village for motivating the villagers for joining the naxalism," SP, Mahatha pointed out.Intelligence sources maintained that the Naxalshave once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism, said a senior intelligence officer. Giving details about the exchange of fire, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishav Jha said, “Police received a tip-off that some members of the group, led by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) zonal commander Paramjit, have escaped to Tikulia and Hossir villages after an exchange of fire with the Police on May 18 in a forest near Hossir. A joint team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the State Police, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bachandeo Kujur, carried out search operations for two days in the area. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exchanged fire with Security Forces (SFs) following the recovery of 60 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from two separate locations under Goilkera Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on June 12, reports The Times of India. The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said the search operation in the area was launched earlier in the day on a tip-off about the movement by Maoists in the forest cover of Goilkera and Sonua Police station areas.

Based on his revelations during interrogation, in another incident, the Security Forces (SFs) launched search operations in Masalia and Shikaripara Police Station areas in Dumka District and recovered one Self- loading Rifle (SLR), three INSAS rifles, one carbine, 357 cartridges and 1,675 detonators. Police arrested two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commanders’ and seized 72 can bombs and four rifles, as well as a pistol and other explosives, in four separate raids in Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, Khunti and Ranchi Districts of Jharkhand, reports The Telegraph on August 26. As per the report, the raids followed the arrests of Maoist ‘commanders’ – Jitrai Munda and Jogen Purty in Khunti District on August 23. They had during interrogation revealed the rebels’ plans to attack the Police and Paramilitary Forces in Kuchai in Seraikela-Kharsawan and Tamar in Ranchi District. The Seraikela-Kharsawan District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammed Arshi said, the Maoists had laid can bombs in large numbers at Raisindri hill in Kuchai to inflict casualties to the Police and Paramilitary Forces during their anti-insurgency operations. He said that apart from the can bombs, the rebels had also kept rifles and ammunition hidden in Jharjhara hills at Tamar in Ranchi district for use against the Forces. “Munda and Purty, whom the Khunti Police had arrested on August 23, had said during interrogation that Naxal leaders – Anal, Ashim, Amit Munda, Atul and Maharaja Pramanik are active in Seraikela-Kharsawan, West Singhbhum and Tamar in Ranchi district, where IEDs had been laid. The duo had also pointed out the places where the rebel leaders had kept rifles and ammunition hidden. On getting the information, a joint team of Khunti, Ranchi, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan Police conducted extensive searches. By August 25 morning, we had found all the bombs and firearms the two rebels had spoken of,” said the SP.
