Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) s’ Telangana ‘state committee member’ Sudhakar was killed in an encounter in a forested area in the border of Semaldodi village under Ilmidi Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 18, reports Deccan Chronicle. Sudhakar, a ‘divisional committee (DVC) member’ and senior member of Telangana ‘state committee’ of Maoist was gunned down, Bastar range, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P. said. According to him, a search party of Greyhounds, the elite anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] squad of Telangana State, commandos, was out on anti-Naxal operations in the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border following inputs on the movement of Sudhakar along with 40-50 Maoists in the area, and in the ensuing encounter Sudhakar was killed. One Self Loading Rifle (SLR) and one INSAS [Indian Small Arms System] assault rifle was also recovered by security personnel at the encounter site.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in a joint operation by the District Reserve Guards (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s anti-Maoist specialized wing CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) in the forest area of Timmapuram under Chintalnar Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on January 30, reports SocialNews.XYZ. The troopers of DRG of the State Police and the 201st Battalion of CoBRA were out on patrolling to ensure security for the ongoing road construction works in interior areas wherein a group of armed Maoists opened fire on the patrolling team near Timmapuram, located over 450 kilometers from the State capital Raipur, leading to the gunfight and after the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a male Maoist wearing his 'uniform' and firearms were recovered from the spot, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sukma Sunil Sharma informed. When the patrolling team was withdrawing from the forest, an exchange of fire broke out again, the SP said, adding that intermittent firing was still underway in the area.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre accused in a number of violent incidents was killed in an encounter with Police in a forest near Burgum village under Aranpur Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on the intervening night of February 19 and 20, reports The Hindu. The encounter took place in a forest near Burgum village under Aranpur police station limits when a team of the District Reserve Guard was out on an anti-Naxal operation, and after the face-off ended, the body of a Maoist was recovered, Superintendent of Police (SP), Siddharth Tiwari said, adding that the deceased, identified as Arjun alias Lakhma Sodi (34), was carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on his head. Sodi was active as the ‘militia commander in-charge’ of Malanger area committee of Maoists, and was involved in 13 incidents of violence, including of murder, attempt to murder and abduction. A pistol, a five kilograms tiffin bomb, Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] uniform, electric wires, wire cutter, Naxal literature and some camping materials were also recovered from the encounter spot.

Six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were arrested and explosives were seized from four of them, from separate places in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh, reports latestly.com on February 27. Sonu Korsa (35), Munna Hapka (37), Mangal Korsa (26) and Sonu Hapka (27) were arrested from Padeda-Cherpal area under Bijapur Police Station limits, while Korsa Sannu (30) was arrested from a different location in the same area, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pankaj Shukla said. "These arrests took place on February 24 when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local police was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. One more ultra, identified as Sukhram Karam (30), was arrested on Friday [February 25] at a police check post (MCP) [mobile check post] set up between Awapalli and Murdanda," he said. Two tiffin bombs, detonators, detonating cord, electric wire, Maoist literature were seized from the four held in Padeda-Cherpal area, he added.

Two women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were gunned down by Security Forces (SFs) following an exchange of fire in the forested terrain of Durda in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 27, reports The New Indian Express. Kamal Lochan Kashyap, Bijapur District Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “Based on an intelligence input about the movement of Maoists in the region, a joint team of the Bijapur district reserve guards (DRG) and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] was out on a search operation. When the forces arrived close to the forested terrain of Durda, about 30 km from the district headquarters, an encounter ensued. Two bodies of women cadres in uniform of the banned outfit were recovered from the site.” There was however no report of any injury sustained by the SFs that safely returned, the SP said, adding the Bijapur Police are identifying the bodies. The SFs also recovered one locally-made rifle, ammunition and explosives.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre identified as Lakhma Kawasi was killed in an encounter between the District Reserve Guard (DRG) team and Maoists in the forest near Tumkapal village under Katekalyan Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on March 1, reports The Print. Kawasi, a resident Kodopal under Katekalyan Police Station, carrying a reward of INR 300,000 on his head by the Chhattisgarh Government is a member of Platoon ‘Commander’ 31, Darba Division. Following the encounter, Police recovered a pistol, five kilograms Improvised Explosive Device (IED), books, Maoist uniform, wires, items of daily use and other materials from the encounter site.

Maoists laid an ambush near Tekametapara and when the SFs reached the area, they opened indiscriminate firing and also lobbed BGL as well as UBGL shells. The encounter took place at around 8.30 a.m. [IST] at a forest near Kaika and Mosla villages, when a group of armed Maoists opened fire on a joint team of the DRG and 222nd battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling team leading to the gun-battle. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said, the operation, involving personnel from the Police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on August 7, following intelligence about the presence of the Maoists’ Madded Area Committee ‘divisional commander’ Nagesh in the area. After the gun-battle ended, an SLR (self-loading rifle) with 29 live cartridges, an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle with four live cartridges, a .303 rifle with six rounds, explosives, Maoist literature and materials of daily use were recovered from the spot, IGP, Sundarraj said, adding, “During the search of nearby areas, an injured male Naxalite was caught and a hand-grenade, a .12 bore gun with 10 rounds and five detonators were seized from his possession.” The identity of the arrested Maoist is yet to be established. The body of Deva alias Tirri Madkami was found in the Jiakorta Forest area near Bhusaras valley under Kuakonda Police Station, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said. Madkami was wanted in nine Maoist-related incidents and carried a reward of INR 800,000 on his head, he added. A weapon, a bag and a water bottle were recovered near the body, he said. Madkami was a member of the Katekalyan Area Committee of the Maoists, which has been instrumental in executing several major attacks. However, no injury or casualty was reported in the incident, officials said, adding that the incident was reported in Orchha Police Station limits about 65 kilometers away from district headquarters when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were out for area domination towards Gudari village when the IED blast occurred. Soon after the explosion, Maoists, who were hiding in the area started firing at the team. In response to the same, the SFs responded to the firing, forcing Maoists to flee. The DRG and CAF teams carried out searches and recovered material used for IED explosion including wires and pieces of the pressure cooker used in the blast in the area.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said, the gunfight took place at around 10 am in a forest between Perowada and Timenar villages under Mirtur Police Station limits when a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Maoist operation. The operation was launched based on the inputs about the presence of members of the Bhairamgarh area committee of Maoists in Mirtur area, located more than 400 kilometres from the State capital Raipur. After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Maoist along with a weapon was recovered from the spot, the IG said, adding, that the identity of the killed Maoist was yet to be ascertained.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a woman, were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in a forest area near Tekameta village under Farsegarh Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on December 23, reports The Indian Express. The Police said the encounter took place during an anti-Maoist operation undertaken jointly by SFs of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Bilaspur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjneya Varshney said, “The location of the encounter is said to be around 10 km from Maharashtra border. One woman and one man were killed. Another Maoist, who was injured in the encounter, was captured alive and we are questioning him. We have recovered three weapons – two SLRs [Self Loading Rifles] and another firearm. No one from our team suffered injury.” While the male Maoist killed in the operation is yet to be identified, the woman Maoist was later identified as Kanthi Lingavva alias Anitha (41), from Laxmi Sagar village in Kaddampeddur Mandal (administrative sub division) in Nirmal District of Telangana. She had a bounty of INR 1.6 million on her arrest from Maharashtra and another bounty of INR 500,000 from Telangana. She worked as a ‘Divisional Committee Member (DCM)’ and ‘Assistant Commander’ of Kumram Bheem Divisional Committee (KBDC). She had joined the party after being attracted to ideologies of the outfit 15 years ago. According to the Police, she is the wife of Mylarapu Adellu alias Bhashkar, a member of the Telangana State Committee and ‘secretary’ of KBDC of the Maoists. Mylarapu, who has a bounty of more than INR 2 million for his arrest, was at the spot and managed to escape, the Police said. The injured Maoist, identified as Lachhmayya Kuchha Weladi (28), from Tekameta in Bijapur, was arrested and taken into custody.
