At least 27 left-wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were reportedly arrested and a large quantity of arms and ammunition recovered from them during the course of a five-day joint operation by Central para-military forces and the State police before the Legislative Assembly elections in Bihar. Quoting Central Reserve Police Force officials, the report said ten Naxalites were arrested on January 24 from Patahi village in the East Champaran district and separate places in Jehanabad district. Further, about 15 weapons, nine bombs and 67 cartridges were seized during the five-day drive that commenced on January 22 in five districts -- East and West Champaran in north Bihar and Jehanabad, Arwal and Patna in the south.

Police in the Gaya district of Bihar have reportedly recovered an unspecified quantity of arms from an illegal arms factory at Digdi Matuya village on April 22. The factory owner, Mohammed Iftiyak, and some of his workers were arrested. "We received information that left wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) are running an illegal arms factory. Then we raided the place and arrested a person called Mohammed Iftiyak," said Janardan Singh, Station House Officer of the Konch Police station. According to reports, illegal arms factories are flourishing in the Naxalite-affected districts of Bihar like Jehanabad, Gaya and Nalanda. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and other Naxalite groups are allegedly the driving force behind these units. There are reportedly over 1,500 illegal arms manufacturing units in Bihar and most of them are located in the Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya and Munger districts.

According to Outlook, a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, Dipak Choudhury, who is wanted in connection with several recent Maoist attacks, was arrested from the Radhia forests on the India-Nepal border in West Champaran district of Bihar on July 9. District magistrate Rana Avadhesh, said three bodies, thought to be of abducted Ranvir Sena cadres, were recovered from the rail tracks near the jail. Five others were reported to have been killed in the adjoining Gaya district. The body of Visweshwar Rai, a prominent Sena member, was found in a Jehanabad village. District Magistrate Rana Avadhesh said eight RS activists were arrested and ten rifles and over 100 rounds of ammunition seized from them on November 25-night at Sendwa village under Parasbigha police station limits.
