A top Laskhar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was killed on January 14 in a fierce gun battle in Sopore town of Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. A Defense spokesman said that based on specific intelligence about presence of militants in Sofi Hamam Chankhan area of the Sopore town, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles units of Army and the Police, resulting into killing of one militant and recovery of one AK 47 rifle, 3 magazines, 89 rounds of ammunition, one UBGL, three UBGL rounds and other war like stores. Police and Army arrested the militant commander from the house of a village headman in Sangarhama area of Sopore. Police also arrested the village headman Farooq Ahmad Bhat. The LeT commander has been identified as Zulfikar Ahmad Mughal (24) alias Akhtar Hussain alias Amir Maviya of Gulshan Iqbal, Karachi in Pakistan. Security Force (SF) personnel on January 18 killed two ‘divisional commanders’ of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) during an operation in Saidpora village of Sopore in Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. A Police spokesman while giving details about the operation said that Sopore Police along with 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and 177 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in Saidpora village. The militants fired upon the joint search party, triggering an encounter in which two militants were killed. Two Pakistani militants Asadullah of LeT and Ramzan of JeM were killed in the gun battle. There was no collateral damage to any person or property during the operation. Two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, 140 rounds and one pistol were recovered from them. Earlier, it was reported that two JeM militants were killed in an encounter with SFs in Sopore town of north Kashmir.

Four persons, including a Commanding Officer (CO) of the Army, a Head Constable (HC) of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and two militants were killed in an encounter with militants in Tral area of Pulwama District on January 27, reports Daily Excelsior. Army’s 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and SOG and 185 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Handoora village after receiving information about presence of two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants. The militants hiding in the house of Jalal-ud-Din Khan opened fire on the search party of the troops injuring CO of the 42 RR, Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, Signalman Nilesh Kumar and Police HC, Sanjeev Singh. While being evacuated to the Army Hospital, Srinagar, Colonel Munindra Nath Rai and HC Sanjeev Singh succumbed to their injuries. The gun battle continued for about an hour in which two militants identified as Abid Ahmad Khan alias Hamza and Sheraz Ahmad Dar were killed. 2 AK rifles, 4 AK magazines, many rounds of AK rifle and one hand grenade were recovered from the encounter site.

Army on May 8 thwarted a major terror plot by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) by killing their commander in half an hour long gun battle along the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Poonch District while a group of six to seven other Pakistani militants were reported to have retreated to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that the militant was carrying with him a Global Positioning System (GPS), which is provided only to the militant commanders to find the route while leading the group. In addition to GPS, Army recovered one AK-47 rifle, four magazines, 94 rounds, four Chinese grenades and large quantity of eatables mostly dry fruits from the possession of slain militant. Recovery of dry fruits from the slain militant was also an indication that the militants had planned to set off to some hideouts in Pir Panjal range after infiltration or target the Army and Police installations. This was first infiltration attempt on the LoC in twin border Districts of Rajouri and Poonch this summer with melting of snow and opening of passes.

The rest of the militants of the group fled under the cover of darkness and dense foliage. Army conducted searches in the dawn and recovered three bodies of militants along with arms and ammunition. Army on July 13 killed Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ‘divisional commander’ and member of the outfit’s Border Action Team (BAT), who had beheaded two Army soldiers at Mankot sector in Poonch District on January 8, 2013, when he along with a group of three associates was trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory for fidayeen (suicide) attack in wee hours, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said that the infiltrators had planned BAT action in the same Mankot sector as they were well versed with the area but they found the troops on very high alert along the Line of Control (LoC) despite heavy rains in the area at about 3.30 am. Troops took on the militants and eliminated one of them while three others retreated to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). One of the fleeing militants left behind his bags carrying large quantity of Pakistan made eatables. Documents recovered from the slain militant established his identity as Mohammad Anwar alias Azhar, a ‘divisional commander’ of the LeT and a Pakistani national, who was trained by Pakistan Army in the BAT actions. Azhar along with Pakistan Army commandos had beheaded two Army soldiers Sepoy Hem Raj and Lance Naik Saudagar after intruding deep inside the LoC in Mankot sector of Poonch District on January 8, 2013. The BAT members and Pakistan Army personnel had escaped to PoK. Army recovered one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, 39 rounds, two anti-personnel mines, Rs 10,000 Indian currency and Rs 6885 Pakistani currency. The militants were also carrying Pakistan made two mobile telephones—one of them with Pakistani SIM card and Pak made food items including 11 packets of biscuits, three packets of milk, five packets of ORS, water bottles, half kg almonds and other dry fruits, rain coats etc. All four militants were wearing combat dresses, which indicated that they planned to carry out fidayeen action after infiltration into this side.

A senior Police officer said after receiving specific input about the presence of militant, the Security Forces (SFs) including Police’s Special Operation Group (SOG), the army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and 130 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Kawani village in Awantipora District in the afternoon. “As the searches were underway, the hiding militants fired upon search parties triggering an encounter,” the officer said, adding one HM militant was killed in the gunfight. The slain militant has been identified as Muzamil Ahmad Dar, resident of Chhaterpora in Shopian District. Sources said that there were three militants hiding in the area and two managed to escape. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Nitish Kumar said that two grenades were recovered from the possession of slain Muzamil. Major General Paramjit Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 28 Division of Army, told reporters that Army encircled the militants by 7:30 a.m. and by 10:30 a.m., all of them were eliminated. “These terrorists had AK-47 rifles, ammunition and large number of grenades. One Army man was injured and gun battle is over but the searches are still on”, he said. The pouches recovered from them had written on them Afzal Guru Brigade. Sources said that a group of three militants attacked Battalion headquarters of 3/1 GR at around 6 am in Tanghdar. “The attackers were dressed in Army fatigue and entered the camp by cutting the fencing wire of the camp”, they said. “Oil depot inside the camp caught fire during the gun battle which later spread to nearby barracks gutting five of them, including a generator room. Besides, three vehicles were also gutted in the incident”, reports said. Militants killed a local employee of MES, Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh, who was operating power generator inside the camp. The bodies of the militants were handed over to local Auqaf Committee for burial.

A team of the Army personnel conducted searches in forest area along the LoC in Sunderbani and recovered the consignment of arms and ammunition, hidden by the anti-national elements. Official sources said a joint team of Delta Force troops based at Sohanda, Gandoh Police and 42 battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) conducted a joint search operation in Kindre forest area of Gandoh following information developed about dump of large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives. Recoveries made from the spot included one AK-56 rifle, one .303 rifle, two Chinese pistols, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), two hand grenades, 11 AK-56 magazines, four Chinese pistol magazines, three UBGL grenades, 11 pistol rounds and huge quantity of 7.62mm assorted rounds along with other sustenance stores. Sources said the cache of arms and ammunition had been stocked by the militants inside the hideout to use it at an opportune time. The cache had the potential to cause large scale casualties and damage to life and property. “However, the alert teams of Army, Police and SSB have thwarted designs of the militants by timely effecting recoveries of arms, ammunition and explosives and destroying hideout of the militants, which reportedly belonged to erstwhile Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militancy, who were not active now,” they added.

At least three dozen persons including 24 Policemen were injured in clashes in Pulwama town in Pulwama District on December 25; amid a shutdown against the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, reports Daily Excelsior. The District Administration had imposed curfew like restrictions in the town after apprehending protests against the killing of LeT militant, identified as Owais Ahmad Sheikh alias Hamza. Owais hurled a grenade on the troops when they challenged him and troops fired back killing him on the spot, during an encounter on December 24. Owais had reached Bandipora on December 19 to transport a group of five LeT militants from the Bandipora forests to South Kashmir. A senior Police officer said that at least 20 Policemen and 12 civilians were injured during clashes. “Police showed maximum restraint and patience during the clashes and did not use any lethal weapon on the protesters,” the officer said. An Army spokesman said one 9mm Chinese pistol, magazine and 8 rounds along with other war like stores were recovered from the sight of encounter. Owais, a student of Bachelor of Arts (BA) II year in Degree College Pulwama, had joined LeT in June this year after snatching weapon from Policemen deployed in the Pulwama District hospital. Owais was a resident of Chhaterpora locality of the town.

A senior Police officer said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of the State Police jointly cordoned off Samboora village on receiving information about the presence of militants. “As security forces were searching the village, militants hiding in a house opened fire triggering an encounter. Two militants, one local identified as Manzoor Ahmad and a foreigner were killed. Two AK-47 rifles were recovered,” the officer said.
