SF sources clarified that four security force (SF) personnel were killed and eight more injured when a convoy was ambushed by unidentified terrorists at Darhal, Rajouri district, on the night of January 2. Earlier reports said two SF personnel were killed when their camp was attacked. On the same night, an SF personnel was killed and another injured in an encounter in Keri, Rajouri. In a third incident in the district on the night of January 2, unidentified terrorists made an attempt to destroy the Thanna Mandi Electricity Grid Station. SF personnel guarding the site repulsed the attack and there was no damage. The terrorists managed to escape after the attack. A group of terrorists had made a similar unsuccessful attempt to destroy the Grid Station the previous night. In Kupwara district, unidentified terrorists abducted and killed a civilian in Potshai on January 2.

In a joint operation carried out at Barhi Darhal, Rajouri, by a team of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG), three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were killed. Although security forces did not suffer any casualty, two civilians trapped in the cross-firing were injured. Two of the terrorists were from Pakistan while the third hailed from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Official sources indicated that all three were hardcore terrorists involved in a series of subversive activities across the Darhal area of Rajouri district. Three AK-56 rifles, five AK magazines, four hand grenades, a radio set and 98 AK rounds were recovered from the encounter site.

Security forces (SFs), on October 18, foiled an infiltration attempt on the Line of Control (LoC) by killing three foreign mercenaries in the Keri sector, Rajouri district. Official sources said SFs deployed in forward positions noticed a group of six to seven infiltrators heading towards Indian territory in Bendi Gala. The infiltrators opened fire on an SF post and attempted to force their entry into a village. In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists were killed while the rest escaped. Recoveries made from the encounter-site included three AK-56 rifles, three magazines, 170 rounds of ammunition, a wireless set, six grenades and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives. A letterhead of Hizb-e-Islami recovered from the pocket of one of the terrorists indicated the terrorist group’s affiliation with the outfit.

Sources said a total of nine terrorists, all Pakistanis, had intruded from Keri sector, and while three of them were killed by security forces (SFs) on October 18, six others had managed to escape. Of the six absconding terrorists, three were spotted by SF personnel in the school building, and in the ensuing encounter they were killed. Three more infiltrators were still at large and a search was on for them. Of the three terrorists killed, two have been identified as Mohammed Iskar, ‘area commander’ of Tehreek-e-Jehad, and Asama, both residents of Kotli in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). An SF personnel sustained injuries in this encounter. Six AK rifles, 207 AK rounds, two radio sets, seven hand grenades, Rupees 31,000 in cash and a large quantity of ammunition and explosive material was recovered from the encounter-site.
