On February 10, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council chairman and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) chief Subhas Ghising was seriously injured in an ambush laid on his convoy by unidentified gunmen near Kurseong, Siliguri, West Bengal. Three persons, including one of the assailants, were killed and six security personnel injured in the ambush. Police also claimed to have recovered one AK-47 rifle, two magazines and a grenade from the ambush site. The president of the Gorkha Liberation Organisation (GLO) and a former Ghishing loyalist, Chhatre Subba, had woved to kill Ghishing as he had ignored to raise the demand for a separate Gorkhaland after assuming chairmanship of the autonomous Hill Council.

On April 18, three Pakistani terrorists, including the commander-in-chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), were killed in an encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) and intelligence agencies of the State police in the Gomtinagar area, Lucknow. Nearly two kg of high quality chemical explosives, two AK rifles, and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the terrorists. Besides, sophisticated communication equipment, too, was recovered. The Uttar Pradesh police chief said the terrorists were on a suicide mission in the State. They were shot dead while on their way to Faizabad. Causing large-scale destruction, including violence during the Kumbh and demolition of the structure at Ayodhya, were the main objectives of the suicide squad. He further added that the terrorists were trained by the JeM in Afghanistan. In a separate incident, on the same day, four persons, including the project officer of the District Urban Development Authority (DUDA), were injured in a bomb attack in Gorakhpur. Further details are yet not available.

Delhi police said that the arrested agents were plotting to kill Tarun Tejpal, editor-in-chief of the portal tehelka.com and his colleague Anirudha Bahl. Police added that the six arrested included gangsters from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and a large quantity of arms and ammunitions have been recovered from their possession besides some fake Indian currency. A layout plan of the office and residence of the Tehelka chief besides photographs of Tarun Tejpal and Anurudha Bahal were also recovered from them. The CBI chief, while speaking to the media in New Delhi, said, "We have got full information about these arms dealers and their addresses. We are hopeful of nabbing them soon.'' He added that several CBI officials were tracking down these arms smugglers and more information was being collected about their syndicate. The seizure suggests that all materials were being collected to make bombs. After the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, and the US led military operations against Afghanistan, the CBI has formed a ‘core group’ to collect intelligence in a big way on the terrorist groups. The police, on December 6, arrested two suspected Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorists from Adarsh Nagar area in Northwest Delhi. A suspected hawala (illegal money transfers) operative, who was said to be funding the terrorists, was also arrested from the Jama Masjid area. The police also seized 1.8 kg of explosives, four live electronic detonators, three mobile phones, five phone cards and Rs 67,000 in cash from the two alleged terrorists, both residents of Baramulla in Jammu & Kashmir. An additional Rs 1.48 million of hawala money was seized in subsequent raids. During interrogation, the terrorists reportedly told the police that they were working for the HM Chief Syed Salahuddin and had come to Delhi to collect hawala money and pass it on to terrorist outfits in Jammu and Kashmir. They were also reportedly instructed to deliver explosives to contacts in Delhi.

The car was taken into custody by the police for further investigation. About 30 kg of RDX was recovered from the car. The Parliament complex has been sanitized and made safe. Other explosives carried by the terrorists in bags were also defused successfully. At least two grenades were also defused successfully. The Lok Sabha security has reportedly given ‘all clear signal’ so that Parliament session could be held on December 14. A red alert has been sounded and security beefed up at all key installations throughout the country. Security forces were put on maximum alert and surveillance strengthened at Assembly buildings, State Secretariats, Governor’s houses and other installations. Patrolling has also been intensified at vulnerable places in the State capitals. In Delhi, Army has been deployed at Parliament, North and South Blocks and key ministries.

Police on December 19 recovered approximately 35 kg of RDX, detonation fuse wire and an AK-47 rifle, allegedly smuggled from across the border, during combing operations 40 km north of the Hajipir-Bhiata area, Banni grasslands, in the Rann of Kutch. Police sources said they acted on a tip-off by a Pakistani infiltrator arrested on May 27, 2001 and currently lodged at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Bhuj. The infiltrator, Muzamil, believed to a terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), reportedly told police that he had cross into India with four others. They buried the consignment they brought in for retrieving later.
