The Delhi Police on January 4 claimed to have foiled an attempt to kill Baba Pyara Singh Paniharewala, a Ropar-based religious leader, with the arrest of four alleged Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorists, according to The Hindu. On the hit list of the terrorists were four other prominent personalities of Punjab, the police said. Four pistols and 124 live cartridges were allegedly seized from their possession. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, the Joint Commissioner (Special Cell) of Police, Karnal Singh, said the terrorists - Baljeet Singh, Bikkar Singh, Kulwinderjeet Singh and Tirlochan Singh - had carried out a dry run and were planning to assassinate the religious leader on January 5. “The four monitored the security arrangements for the religious leader and planned to smuggle in weapons in a milk container,” said Karnal Singh, who, citing security reasons, refused to disclose the other targets. The police reportedly arrested Baljeet and Bikkar at Patiala and Sangrur in Punjab over the weekend. Kulwinderjeet and Tirlochan were arrested in Ludhiana and Panchkula in Haryana two days later.

The ‘Q’ Branch of the State Police on January 8 intercepted a consignment of explosives bound for Sri Lanka and took six persons into custody, who admitted that they were meant for use by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), reports The Hindu. Based on intelligence inputs of an attempt to smuggle large quantities of detonators, police personnel intercepted two persons moving in a suspicious manner near the railway station in Madurai. S. Sivakrishnan alias Nandan of Sri Lanka and S. Muthuramalingam of Kamuthi were found to be in possession of 5,000 detonators concealed in a travel bag. During interrogation, Sivakrishnan confessed he had delivered a consignment of explosives to the LTTE on January 3 through K. Murugapandi of Kamuthi and a couple of agents. The police arrested Murugapandi from a lodge in the city. He admitted to smuggling as instructed by an LTTE leader. Investigators said Murugapandi was paid INR 150000 through a hawala transaction. The money has been recovered. Special teams formed to arrest others involved in the smuggling arrested an auto rickshaw driver R. Raja, M. Poo Murugan of Kadaladi, S. Chandra and M. Senthilmurugan of Mudukulathur. Police are on the lookout for Raghu of Chennai, who allegedly supplied the explosives.

Following the trail of cell phone contacts of Nathan alias Suruli, arrested along with seven others at Madipakkam on January 17 in the same case, ‘Q’ Branch police on January 20 intercepted Selvaraj, working in a sweet stall in Mumbai for the last 25 years, and seized small packets of ball bearings he had bought as samples. "Selvaraj did not know about the arrest of Nathan and had come down to strike a deal with him for the sale of ball bearings. We picked him up here with the sample packets," ‘Q’ Branch Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar said in Chennai, adding, Selvaraj was in regular contact with Nathan, who worked as the intelligence chief of the LTTE in Tamil Nadu. "We are scrutinising the cell phone contacts of Selvaraj. We have not got any other leads," he further said.

The Superintendent of Police Chanchal Shekhar told Times of India, "We were told the camp trained SIMI activists from Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka and a few other states. Each training camp would train around 20 SIMI members. We have information of five such camps in the past one-and-half years, which would mean about a hundred SIMI activists trained in Choral." He said that the trainees were made to climb the surrounding mountains and swim across the river daily. The police also found evidence of a firing range and exploded bits of petrol bombs.

The Hindu reports that on June 16, 2,400 detonators were seized from two civilians, identified as Ravikant Kumar and Shrawan Kumar belonging to Rohtas district, at Mughalsarai railway station. Police sources said that both persons were intercepted by the police when they alighted from the Gaya-Mughalsarai Passenger train at around 12-30 pm (IST). While Ravikant, who was carrying 1,400 detonators in a bag, was arrested by the police, the other person managed to escape leaving behind a consignment of 1,000 detonators. The detonators were manufactured by AP Explosive Private Limited, Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana Explosive Private Limited. Interrogation revealed that the two persons were carriers who had been given the consignment by an unidentified person at Dehri in Rohtas district. Ravikant told the police that twice before in May he had delivered two separate consignments of 1,000 and 700 detonators in Mirzapur. Previously, on the night of June 12-13, 3100 electronic detonators were seized by the police on Platform No. 3 of Mughalsarai station. Two persons carrying the consignment managed to flee after dropping the bag. These detonators were also made in the Nalgonda explosive manufacturing factory. Police sources said that the seizures indicate the possibility of a strike planned by the left-wing extremists in the region. In both the cases, the detonators were being taken to Mirzapur which along with Chandauli and Sonebhadra districts bordering Jharkhand and Bihar has been the base of extremist activities in Uttar Pradesh.

Times of India reports that central intelligence agencies and the Delhi Police arrested a Bangladeshi national, identified as Mohammad Hakim, from the New Delhi railway station on July 29-night. Hakim, who was reportedly carrying some explosive material, is believed to be part of the module linked to the recent terrorist attacks in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. ‘‘Hakim is being taken to Siliguri by a team of IB and special cell officers. They suspect that other members of the module could be hiding there. His interrogation has also thrown up vital facts about the low-intensity serial blasts reported in Mehrauli and Malviya Nagar recently,’’ said an unnamed senior police officer. Hakim has told the police that he was trained in bomb making by one Mohammad Ansari, who, too, is a Bangladeshi national. Ansari is also believed to have been trained in making low-intensity explosives in Bangladesh. ‘‘The agencies suspect that the module was active in West Bengal and used to sneak into Bangladesh. The disclosure of Hakim is important also from the point of view that the last terror e-mail about Surat bombs was sent from Kolkata,’’ said another officer who is part of the team.

There were also reports of a low intensity blast in Ville Parle and grenade attack in Santa Cruz. Two blasts have been reported in the Napean Sea road area of south Mumbai. There is a hostage situation in at least two locations - the Taj and the Trident hotels – when last reports came in. In the Taj Colaba, at least 100 people are believed to be trapped probably held hostage by terrorists. Some of these are Israeli and Canadian nationals. The terrorists reportedly came in by sea from Karachi in Pakistan. A boat laden with explosives was recovered later at night off the Gateway of India. Five suspected terrorists were killed in two separate incidents overnight including two at Girgaum in south Mumbai during a gun battle and two sten guns have been recovered from them, police said. While NSG and Military Commandos have reportedly entered the Taj and Trident hotels, at least 800 Army personnel have been deployed at various locations in Mumbai. "Encounter is on between police and terrorists at Taj and Trident. Our people have surrounded them and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) team has arrived at the Taj hotel," said the Director General of Police, A. N. Roy. Many foreigners have reportedly been held hostage by the terrorists. "Gunmen took 15 hostages and half of them foreigners," said an eye-witness at the Taj hotel. "Gunmen wanted anyone with British or American passport," said another eye-witness. At least four terrorists were holed up in the Taj Hotel where 40 to 50 guests were still trapped, Major R K Hooda, General Officer Commanding of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, said. Speaking to NDTV, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R. R. Patil said, "There is no plan for talks with the terrorists." Claiming to have some "vital leads", he expressed confidence of a breakthrough soon. Intelligence sources said that a foreign hand is fully evident in these attacks. They have also reportedly arrested a Pakistan national from Chowpatty area in the city. Police chief A. N. Roy said, "There is no indication so far of the identity of the terrorists." He said that the terrorists were highly armed, level of weapons and training suggest that they are not locals. An unknown outfit, Deccan Mujahideen, has sent an email to news organizations claiming that it carried out the Mumbai attacks. Two bombs were found less than 50 metres near a heap of tiles, outside the main entrance of Taj hotel, and defused in time but the third bomb which was placed near the entrance of the Oberoi Trident hotel exploded. However, the bomb disposal squad put a cover on it, substantially reducing the impact of the bomb. Reportedly each one of the bombs was containing eight kilograms of RDX. The RDX used appeared similar to the one used in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, an unnamed police officer said, adding, “only the forensic tests will confirm the origin."
