The Police said the armed Kuki militants abducted the workers at gunpoint on February 7 when they were busy in the construction of a bridge at Leikhong near Nongpok Keithelmanbi in Thoubal District. The SFs subsequently launched a massive combing operation in possible locations and mountainous areas and the hostages were traced at the Kamuching forests. “Sensing the presence of security forces, the extremists fired at them, leading to a fierce gunfight that lasted for over two hours late on Friday [February 12] evening,” a Police official said. The Kuki ultras during the encounter managed to escape taking advantage of the thick forest and hilly terrain leaving behind the captives.The SFs subsequently rescued the three workers and recovered an AK-47 rifle from the forested areas.

The recoveries include 3,000 special detonators in six cartons, 925 electric detonators in 37 packets, 2,000 mts length of fuze in four boxes and 63 sacks of explosives substance, each sack containing 10 packets each of 2.08 kg of Class II Category - ZZ explosive powder weighing a total of 1.3 tonnes. The recovered items and apprehended persons were handed over to the Dungtalang Police Station and a First Information Report (FIR) was being lodged, the statement said.

During a search operation, self-styled ‘sergeant major’ Komthok Ngongpa and self-styled ‘private’ Chungaung, both natives of Nyamyong District in Myanmar, were arrested along with a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, including two .32 mm pistols, 1,500 grams of IED, live ammunitions of AK 47, .32 mm pistols, a 9 mm pistol, and miscellaneous items like ration, clothing and NSCN documents. This recovery was part of an ongoing investigation in which two persons who were planning to form a new militant outfit were arrested in Tura on July 23, 2021. One 75-year-old man injured on August 12, when troopers of the Assam Rifles and villagers of Chenloisho village of Mon District in Nagaland were ambushed by militants of the Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Khaplang (NSCN-K-YA), reports Northeast Now. The Assam Rifles troopers and the villagers were allegedly ambushed by the NSCN-K-YA militants while they were returning after clearing landslide debris from Chenloisho-Hydro project. According to the statement given by Army’s 3rd Corps, “in a recent incident at Chenloisho, the true face of NSCN-K-YA has emerged wherein they have been indulging in nefarious activities against the local people of Nagaland. In evening, when the villagers and the Assam rifles personnel were returning back together to their locations, three hand grenades were lobbed at them from a height above the dense foliage. Unfortunately, the grenades landed in front of civilians, out of which two didn’t explode however one grenade exploded causing shrapnel injuries to a 75 yrs old local Keipa of Kangynu village.

During a raid at his house in connection with the recent blasts in the State, the former HNLC leader attacked the Police team with a knife and in retaliatory firing, Thangkhiew was killed. According to sources, during interrogation, Nurul Islam claimed there were more arms in his possession, which he had secured in a hideout. “He led a team of Police Officials to the spot and there he pushed one of the constables and snatched his gun. Moments later, he started firing and in retaliation, the Police had to open fire”. Police claimed that Islam was killed in retaliatory firing. Imphal West District Police prevented an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack on Security Force (SF) personnel with the arrest of one active cadre of People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and his wife from a rented house located at Langjing area in Imphal West District of Manipur on September 15, reports EPao. Briefing media at Imphal West District Police conference hall, Superintendent of Police (SP), Imphal West, Dr S Ibomcha paraded the arrested persons along with the seized explosive items. The arrested person was identified as Moirangthem Mohen alias Manao alias Pari (42), resident of Sagolband Tera Sayang Leirak, presently staying at Makoi Langjing Ching Maning, was the ‘self-styled captain’ of the banned underground outfit PREPAK. Acting on the disclosure of Mohen, the Police team recovered and seized one IED fitted with detonator from his rented house. Mohen further disclosed that he is working directly under the command of ‘self-styled Chairman cum general secretary’ of PREPAK Ningombam Premkumar alias Prem alias Tamocha alias Aheiba Angom and as per the instruction of Ningombam Premkumar, he had placed the hand grenade at the office of the KBS Agro Industries, Eeshing for monetary demand. Aheiba Angom also handed over a set of IED bomb with the instruction to attack Security Forces (SFs) and he (Mohen) had already attempted to trigger bomb blasts a few days back somewhere in Langjing area. The SP further stated that during enquiry it came to light that Maisnam (N) Moirangthem (O) Sarda Devi (26) w/o Mohen was aware of the presence of IED and hand grenade in their rented room and was part of the conspiracy. Hence she was also arrested by a team of women Police personnel. The recovered items also include one unexploded hand grenade, IED bomb, battery, digital camera, one remote with battery, Aadhaar card etc.

Speaking at a press conference, Superintendent of Police (SP), Dr S Ibomcha Singh informed that based on the reliable information about the presence of some active cadres of PREPAK-pro in and around Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai to commit pre-judicial activities like hurling of bombs and planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at private business centre, shops, etc., the commando teams conducted Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at some suspected houses during which one active PREPAK-pro cadre identified as Naoroibam Joyshankar Singh alias Loyumba alias Khougang (37) son of N Inaocha of Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai was arrested from his house at 5 am. Joyshankar joined PREPAK-pro in 2009 through one Herojit from Salanthong and got basic military training for three months at Ngayensong, Myanmar under Army No 39914 of 39th batch, the SP said and informed that the accused is a ‘self-styled Lance Corporal’ and worked under the command of the outfit's ‘self-styled captain’ Jiten and ‘chairman’ Subhash alias Palheiba alias Muni. The recoveries included one set of IED fitted in a tin fish can, a Chinese hand grenade, one air gun rifle, four PEK cakes, three electronic circuits, one remote control device, three detonators, 10 batteries of 3.7 volt, three batteries of 4.5 volt, two batteries of 9 volt and soldering equipment use in assembling IED. The ‘self-styled chairman’ of the outfit ANSC, Chekham Ch Sangma was arrested from Hawakhana area of the district, the Police said on October 1. Superintendent of Police (SP), Vivekanand Singh said in a statement, “Chekham was picked up from Hawakhana on September 25 … He disclosed during interrogation that he formed the new group with another 25-30 like-minded people.” The SP said 10 others were arrested over the last few days and two guns and a pistol were seized from their possession. The outfit was apparently in the process of collecting weapons to start its operations with activities like kidnapping, extortion, SP, Singh said, adding, they were in the process of undergoing training after enough weapons were procured. A case has been filed in this regard and an investigation is currently underway. Many of the arrested persons were earlier associated with various militant groups in the Garo Hills hill region (consisting of five districts in Western Meghalaya).

On November 15, three militants belonging to the Yung Aung faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-KYA) were killed in an encounter in Longding District of Arunachal Pradesh. As per Police sources, the militants had abducted village chief Ranwang Lowang and ex-ASM Sunwang Hakhun of Laho village in Longding District on November 14 to get their due ransom amount from the villagers before November 20. During a search operation launched for the abducted persons, the militants were intercepted along the international border of India-Myanmar and a fierce encounter ensured. Three militants were killed while one Assam Rifles (AR) personal sustained injury in hand. Three AK series rifles, ammunition and warlike stores were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. On November 28, a huge quantity of arms and ammunition allegedly belonging to United National Liberation Front (UNLF) was recovered from Huikap Awang Leikai of Imphal East District in Manipur, reports E Pao. During a search operation, arms and ammunition including one AK 81 Assault Rifle with three magazines, one AK 86 Assault Rifle with three magazine, one M-16, A4 UBGL (40 mm grenade launcher) with one magazine, one M-16 Assault Rifle with magazine, one RPG launcher, one RPG shell, 13 AK 56 Assault Rifles with 13 magazines, 39 mm live ammunition (200 nos) and 5.56 mm live ammunition (10 nos) found hidden beneath a cowshed were recovered. Three persons including one UNLF militant identified as Prafullo Singh were arrested in this connection. The other two arrested persons were identified as Laitonjam Kumar Sinh and Wahengbam Tompok.

On December 17, the self-styled ‘chairman’ of newly formed militant outfit Karbi Democratic Liberation Front (KDLF), identified as Jackson Ronghang was killed in an encounter in Rongmongve area of Karbi Anglong in Assam, reports The Assam Tribune. Following information about the presence of the militants in the Rongmongve area, a search operation was launched. It was during the operation, Ronghang was killed in the gunfight while two other militants fled from the spot. A pistol, several cartridges and some documents were seized from the possession of the slain militant. According to Police sources, KDLF ‘chairman’ along with two other militants were allegedly involved in the abduction of three construction workers.

Security Forces (SFs) of Inspector General of Assam Rifles-East (IGAR-E) under Spear Corps, along with local Police, launched an operation and recovered large quantity of explosives and stores three kilometers south of Mawhre village in Siaha District of Mizoram on December 31, 2021, reports East Mojo. The recoveries include 81 kilograms of liquid explosives, 94 kilograms of Belox granular explosives, 395 kilograms of Gelatin rods, 356 rounds of 12-gauge, 70 mm cartridges, 01 IED (Improvised Explosive Device) mechanism, Lead-acid batteries, two Detonators and other stores including foreign origin communication equipment. The recoveries have been handed over to Police for further proceedings.
